BATON ROUGE GAZETTE & COMET—Supplement ®|t <85a?dte anî) Comet. BATON BOUGKi THURSDAY,:^:::»""»»: 0110 - 28 > 1865 - CITY VS. COUNTRY LIFE. Cory O'Lanus, of the Brooklyn Ea gle gives hi« experience of the felici ties of country life at this season. The locality is somewhere iu New Jersey. The place is a lovely spot, but wants improving. The tidewalks are not flagged, and there are no street lamps. No ice cream saloon, no lager ; no aldermen or any of the luxuries of city life. But there is a great deal ofnatu'e.— The nature consists mostly of trees, rail-fences, corn fields and musquitoes. Particularly musquitoes. Also dogs. Everybody in the country keeps dogs. 'Ihey are ani mals of large pattern, not particular about the breed. They earn their bread by barking at cows, horses and strangers. There is a picturesque village, com posed of a tavern and two blacksmith shops. inn: situated on the banks of a canal, it may be regarded as a wa tering place. The graceful canal boats gliding along at the rate of two miles a week, remind you of Venice and gondolas. It much resembles Venice before Venice was built. » Farming life is very serene. You get up in the middle of the night and milk the cowb and split wood for breakfaBt.— You then hoe com till breakfast is ready. After breakfast you feed the pigs and hunt eggs. The balance of the evening is spent in the cheerful recreation of sparring with the musquitoes. Then there's the girls. Most of the farmers raise girls. Tliey are useful to feed the chickens and sit up with the young men in the best room on Sunday eveuing. Country girls are Dice. If you should want to get married at any time, I'll take you out to Jer sey and introduce you. When you go courting them, you must always take a pocket full of pea nuts if you don't want to be consid ered mean. The filopene business is very popu lar. The girls are very apt to expect it. I have just bought out a fancy store, and sent it up there by express, to square my outstanding liabilities in that line. Otherwise, sitting up with country girls is very refreshing. Sitting with one arm around her waist the other hand flattening musquitoes, while she tells you all about the quilting party last winter, at Aunt Jerusha's ; what Sally Ann Spöck wore when she was married to Josiah Corndodger ,and how many chickens they had when they commenced house-keeping is an en joyment not to be met with in town. Respect the Agkd .—Bow low the head, boy. Do revercnce to the old man. Once like you, vicissitudes of lifo have silvered the hair, and changed the round, merry face to the worn via age before you. Once that heart beat with incidents co-equal to any you have ever felt ; as pirations crushed by disappointment, as yours are perhaps destined to be. Once that form moved proudly through the gay scenes of life ; now the hand of Time that withers the flowers of yesterday has warped the figure and destroyed the noble car riage. Once at your age, he possessed the thoughts that pass through your brain, now wishing to accomplish deeds worthy of a nook in fame, anon imagining life a dream, that the soon er he awoke from the better. I ne time to awake is very near at hand, yet his eye kindles at noble deeds of daring, and the hand makes a firmer grasp of the staff. Bow low the head, boy, as you would in your old ago be reverenced Black Your Boots! Why?— Brightly polished boots are cooler in warm weather and warmer in cold weather than dull and dusty boots ; for iu warm weather they reflect the heat of the sun, which dusty and dirty boots absorb ; and in cold weather the dirty boot does not al low the warmth of your foot to radi ate freely, whereas the clean boot does. Clean, bright boots are conse quently more comfortable as well as respectable both iu hot weather and in cold. Not only will different sub stances, as iron and wood, give out heat or take it in, more or less.^ ac tively as it is bright or dull. They have a surface or many little hills and valleys, so that, in truth, there is more surface for heat to pass through either way. As a rough Burface is a larger surface, more heat irom within than without always passes through dull and dirty boots (ban the polished ouee. A Great Country .—Some years ago an Alabama paper got off the following " burst of eloquence : " There's not the least shadow of a doubt of the matter—ours is em phatically, undeniably, incontrovert ably, positively, comparatively, and superlatively, a great and glorious country. The annals of time furnish nothing to compare with it ; Greece wasn't a circumstance ; Rome was no where ; Venice couldn t hold us a candle, while all modern nations sink into insignificance before our coun try. It has longer rivers, and more of them, muddier, deeper, and run faster and go farther, and make more noise, and rise higher, and fall lower, and do more damage, than anybody else's rivers. It has more lakes, and they are bigger and deeper, and clearer than those of any other na tion. It has more cataracts, and they fall farther and faster and harder, and roar louder, and look grander than all other cataracts It has more mountains, and higher ones, and more snow on 'em, and they are harder to get up, and easier to fall down, than all other mountains. It has more gold, and it is heavier and brighter, and is worth more, than the gold of other nations. Our rail cars are bigger and run faster, and pitch off the track oftener, and kill more people than all other cars. Our steamboats are longer, and carry bigger loads, and bile their busters oftener, and the captains swear balder than in other countries. Our men are bigger, higher and thicker, and can fight harder and faster, and can diink more whisky, chaw more tobacco, spit more and further, kick up their heels higher, and do anything else more and better, and oftener, than men in all other countries combined. Our ladies are prettier, druss finer, spend more money, break more hearts, wear big ger hoops and wear shorter dresses, kick up the devil generally to a greater extent than all other ladies. Our politicians can spout louder, lie harder, make gas faster, dodge quicker, and turn oftener, make more noise, and do less work than every body else's politicians. Our niggers are blacker, work harder, have thicker skulls, smell louder, and need thrashing oftener than other niggers. Our children squall louder, grow faster, and get too big for their trowsers quicker than all other children. I » I Begging and Boring .—Our wealthy citizens here, such as Wil liam B. Astor, A. T, Stewart, Au guste Belinont and II. B. Clafin, are subject to such constant annoyauce from petitions and petitioners for charity, that they are compelled to shut themselves up during business hours, and employ clerks to open the letters whose address they do not recognize. Indeed, all men of celebrity are persecuted in this way, and are sought every hour in the day by troops of professional and amateur mendicants, who, if they have an opportunity, only worry out the lives of the notabilities. Even Horace Greeley, for this among other reasons, is obliged to shut himself up in the Bible House, in a room known only to a few inmates, to prevent being bored to death. The Tribune office, I understand, is visited from early morning until nightfall by beggars of all descriptions, and bores of every line and kind, to see II. G., who, it is said, has given away $50,000 in the last ten years to persons soliciting charity, and asking loans that they never designed to return. Apropos of this theme, I observe by the foreign files that the French news papers having announced that Mile. Bejozet had, from some quarter of the horizon, obtained a windfall of $20,000 ; she received before noon next day begging letters which, had she granted all their prayers, would have taken $22,000. Baron de Roths child said once that if he were to comply with all the requests made him in begging letters, it would cost him $5,000,000 a year. Some peo pie find it so much easier to beg than to earn !— N. Y. Correspondent of the Indianapolis Journal.
