L adies ' B enevolent A ssociation .—An official notice clHOwhore inserted, calls lor & mooting of the above Association oa Saturday, tho 27th inst., at 9 o'clock a. m. The Association, aided by the Oity Council, has, we arc happy to say, inaugu rated their praiseworthy undertaking of a "House of Industry" for the indigent poor of our city, where efforts will be made to provido with work and means for a liveli hood, all those legitimately entitled to the watchful caro and protection of tho Asso ciation. Tho City Council has resolved to appro priate fifty dollars monthly, commencing the llrst of August proximo, and also to (traut the use of a building—either the Academy liall or the school-house oontig houh to it, as may be selected—in order to further tho benevolent purroses of the Association. Temporarily, tho ladies have secured a building up town which is in use and will continue to be used us a "House of Industry," until other arrangement* shall havo been consummated. .S ummer K kspitk .—An occasional respite from ono's ordinary avocations or pursuits during the long summer seasons of this latitude, is no less a pleasure than a duty which is duo to one's physical as well us mental well being. A good many of our friornj» and acquaintances, appreciating the benefit to bo derived from a change of climate, sceno and associations, have left us and gone to seek abroad such opportu nities for relaxation and enjoyment us inay coino in their way; and others *re preparing to follow upon similar errands. The Colonel is one of the oldest planters in the State, and has had a great deal of experience in levee matters. He was at one time a swamp land Com missioner, and during his term of office built th(> Grand Levee in a manner never before orsince equalled und but for the caving of the banks it would now be a monument to his administrative abilities. I M jath ok J udge J ones .—Robert Byron Jones, better known as Judge Jones, who was arrested recently at Natchitoches, brought to this city, and confined in the military prison on a charge of having been irnpli . 1-/1 i i> s-* t ir cattid m the murder ot Cyrus VV. Slauffer, died of cholera, on Saturday Saturday evening, at ><o. 191 Baronne street, where he had but a few hours before been removed from the prison. His brother, Dr. Jones, died, it will be remembered, of the same disease a few days previously. Both were but little over thirty years of age, and both leave families.
