T he G arden .—The following ad
vice, which we clip from an agricul
tural exchange, may not be peculiarly
applicable to this season of the year,
but nevertheless, it should be rearl
and carefully digested now, while we
have time to think of such matters,
and acted upon hereafter. We have
all to learn bow much a good kitchen
garden contributes to the support of
the household, and how the time that
we now spend in idleness may be
profitably employed in the cultivation
of vegetables. Keep your boys out
of mischief, when they are not at
school, by making them work in your
gardens. Hero is what oar exchange
says :
Franklin said, ''take care of the
pence and the pound will take care
of themselves." Farmers often re
verse the operation and in trying to
take care of the pounds, the pence
get badly scattered ; tbey have so
much to do on the farm that the gar
den is grievously neglected. The
garden is the most profitable pact of
the homestead, in proportion to its
size, if properly cared for. Plant at
various times so as to bave a succes
sion of vegetables during the summer.'
Radishes, peas, luttuce, sweet corn,
and various other things may be en
joyed for a long time by a little care
and forethought in putting in the
seed. Keep down the weeds ; don't
calculate to tend the garden at odd
hours when you have nothing else to
to do, but make it a point to take
care of that any way. Get the boys
out in the morning before sunrise to
hoe it, and them go with them your
self, and show them bow the thing it
done. Nothing makes a garden flour
ish like stirring the soil every morning
beforebreaktast. Yourdinnersallsum
mer depend upon having it done well.
Don't be afraid you will poison the
garden stuß' by stirring the Boil too
frequently ; don't be afraid that the
cabbage, or corn, or melons, or any
other plants will grumble because the
air, and sunshine, and the rain have
free access to their roots. No, no!
they will enjoy it, and yield you a
rich return for all your labor.

turned from an exteusive tour through
the Southern States, whither ha went
to thoroughly inform himself of the
actual condition of things there.
His reception at Richmond, Savan
nah, Mobile, New Orleans, Vicksburg,
Memphis and other points, was of a
most cordial character. We trust Mr.
Mullaly will give us the benefit of
his observations and experiences or»
some future occasion, at an early day.
They cannot but be of much interest,
just at this time, when there exists so
much misapprehension as to the real

A Word of Cautiou.
THROUGH the process of Kiln drying, large
quantities of Corn, in a more or less dam
aged condition—being mixed with a portion of
sound grain—are now largely made use of by
Wesiern Millers in the manufacture of Kiln-dried
