A n A dikü .— The professional caroer
of Mm. J. B. Henderson, (piano-forte
teacher), in thieoUy, is, wo regret to learn,
about to ceano—that lady bavin« the in
tention to loave here at on early day on a
visit to, and with a view of, residing
among friends who await her, elsewhere.
In a note addressed lo us by Mrs. H., she
desires that we should give expression
through our columns of her thacklul ac
knowledgments to all her friends and ac
quaintances for the encouragement and
patronage she has received at their hands,
and also of her siucero attachment to those
Boholars so long entrusted to her, and to
whom sbo has done every justico in her
power to advunco in the lino of hor voca
tion.
These feelings, we are quite well assured
are warmly reciprocated by her many
friends and pupils, who in parting with
Mrs. U. recognize the severiHg of a tie
which bound them closely in friendship
and devotion to ono whom they cannot
help regarding as a liuly of great personal
merit and professional talent and skill.
M agnolia C bmktkiiy .—We have been
requested to state that tba price of lots in
Magnolia Ceniotery has been reducod to
their former price $26, and that Kedbacks
will be taken at par in payment.
H ome R rading— The Govern
ment of Children —"The rod and re
proof give wisdom ; but a child left
to liimself bringetb his mother
shame." This saying of the wise
man is corroborated by all human
history. Yet a rod, however vigor
ously plied, will not effect much
food where there is neither heart uor
rain behind it. So ot reproof :
where it is just and wisely adminis
tered, considering the time and man
ner of giving it, it "giveth wisdom."
But where caprice or passion wieldB
the rod, the child will be apt to rise
in fierce rebellion against it, or else
look upon it as a thing of little
meaning, which must be jjodged if
possible, ami borne with coolness
where strategy fails. And where
reproof indicates ill temper rallier
than any better motive, where it
lacks discrimination, and has no re
gard for the rights or the feelings of
the child, it accomplishes little. A
perpetual, droning complaint—that
unhappy habit which makes every
little thing the text for a lenghtened
homily, in which the trifle under
consideration is not only magnified
into false importance, but is twisted
into the worst possible shape, and
n»ade drttadful by all kinds of dis
agreeable reminiscences, and still
more disagreeable predictions —
merely sours and hardens the child.
Mr. Rarey, the great tamer of horses,
says that a horse has no idea of jus
tice, and forms no opinion of the way
in which his master deals with him,
whether it be kind or cruel. This
may be so ; but certainly the same
thing cannot be affirmed of children.
They do form opinions in regard to
the way in which they are dealt
with by those who assume to control
them. Even the little ones, whose
scanty store of words does not ena
ble them to exprès their seuse uf
wrong, or whose ideas of the wrong
itself may be vague, are rendered
unbaypy and discouraged by it. To
succeed in governing children, there
are several elements of moral power
that are absolutely essential.'
1. The government must be just.
Children are very sensitive to unfair
treatment. If you charge them with
evil motives, of which they are not
conscious; if you punish them with
severity and without warning, for
w bat they did not suspect to be wrong ;
if you make not. the wrongreally done,
but the degree in which you are an
noyed, the measure of the punish
ment inflicted, your rule may be
feared, but it cannot be respected A
child may be silenced where he re
not convinced. . You may not always
bave time to explain your reasons,
but you must have reasonfe. Indeed,
to assign your reasons beforehaud is
often entirely inexpedient, inasmuch
as it invites hesitation and debate ;
but while you require prompt obedi
ence, be sure that you have sufficient
grounds for all the law which you
lay down.
2. The government should be uni'
form and steady. If you allow to
day what you forbade yesterday,
and may forbid again to-morrow,
your rules will bo likely to fail.
Children do not always Bee the rea
sons of things; and where there is
no evidence to the contrary, they will
assume you are right. Butwherpyou
can change without, apparent cause,
and sometimes frown and sometimes
smile at the same identical thing,
you ought not" to complain if your
commands and prohibitions are
deemed the mere whim ot the hour.
To avoid this danger, do not make
needless rules.
3 Let the government he admin
istcred with calmness. Sometimes
there may be a call for an exhibition
of vigor in repressing evil ; but the
parent or the teacher should never
let it be seen that the crisis is too
much for him. If the parent loses
his self command, the child sees in it
an indication of weakness. He may
dread your occasional outbursts, and
take some care to be out of the way.
if he can, whilo the storm lasts ; but
he receives little good.
4. Let love mingle with all acts of
the ruler. In families, as well as na
tions, it is impoitaut that the subject
should feel that in the framing of the
law his welfare was not forgotten. If
the children get the idea that the
parent or the teacher is merely look
ing out for his own ease or gratifica
tion, there will be no cordial respect
for the gtfternment, and no shame in
disregarding its authority. If even
right law is administered in a harsh
unfeeling way, the spirit of resist
ance will be apt to rise. Convince
them that you seek their good, and
you wiu them to the side of the law.
