what were the ingredients of this decoc
tion called "Beetr."
Palatial residences were crumblin~g into
ruins; the ipaved walks tern up bIy inor
tar shells; the flower beds once blooming
in all the regal heaulty of spring lbrelinc ss
trodden down, the shrubhery neglected.
No fair hands were there to triml thelir
wanton growth; no light footstlps to

Fences were torn down and houses pull
ed to pieces for fire wood. E\en thle en

were parked around these graveyards,

tables for their scanty lleals, or conch>es

and heavy nuns, the shrill whistle of ril

fragments; the fiearful detonations of ex
plosions shaking heaven and earth ; the
hurtling masses of iron descending into
