From Fraser River.
John Hahlcn and Joseph Southern arrired
here a few days since, from Fraser River,
fifty miles aliove its junction with Thomp
son’a River.
They give a gloomy and discouraging
state of things in that part of the country.
Cold, snow, impassable mountains, and a
want of supplies, render it in every way a
most inhospitable region. For many weeks
a large numl<er of the people lived on beans
alone. Miners were making from three to
six dollars n day by the most severe and
disagreeable Intsv. Supplies were worth
from a dollar to a dollar and a half per
pound.
Messrs, llaldcn and Southern suffered
great hardships in m iking their way out of
the country, as well as those in company
with them. They were all more or less fro
zen, and one of the number died from the
eflects of cold. The early gold miners of
Ca/ifornia, know nothing of the privations
and sufierings that have been endured by
adventurers to Frazer River.
The gentlemen mentioned almrc are old
residents of Grass Valley, and, after much
bodily suffering, and a loss of three thousand
dollars io money, feel contented to settle
down at this pluce, as the best locality or
which they know.

The world is now afforded a still greater
curiosity in the person of one Groux. a na
tive of Hamburg, in whom from n deficiency
of the breast-hone, the action of the heart
and arteries may be distinctly seen.
He lias exhibited himself, and lectured ail
over Europe, and is now journeying through
the L’tiilrd State*.
