Lady Ellenborough, wife ol the Eng
lish Lord of that name, who wan formerly
Governor General of India, has besn separ
ated from her husband for twenty years
past, and is leading a wld life among the
Arabs. Bhe lias married tin Arab .Shiehk,
■who, it seems, protected her from robbers
during a visit she paid to Palmyra Full of
romantic gratitude for this service, she de
termiued to marry him. hut the Shiehk ran
away on learning it. She employed Arabs
to bring him back, but being worth £1,500
4i year, she at last succeeded in getting him
to marry hor in the desert in tbo Mrieutal
fashion. They Ji»c »u ologant style near
SDatnascue. After her separation from Lord
[Ellenhorougb she married a Greek Count
whom she left. So that she has now three
husbands, all living, in her early days she
was a great bounty.
p, From the top of Chimborazo to the
bottom of the Atlantic at the deepest place
yet reached by the plummet in the Northern
Atlantic, the distance in a vertical line is
nine miles. The deepest part of the North
Atlantic is probably somewhere between the
liermudas and the Grand Ranks. The wa
ters of the Gulf of Mexico are held in a luisin
about a mile deep in the deepest part. There
is at the bottom of the sea, between Cape
Race, in Newfoundland, and Cape Clear in
Ireland, a remarkable steppe, which is al
ready known as the telegraphic plateau.
Tho great circle distance between two
shore lines is 1,000 miles, and the sea along
tiiis route i? probably no where more than
10,000 feet deep.

lenged the Know Nothing Council of Wor
cester, Muss.. to meet them at any central
point with rifles, to test their boasted tour
age. This is in consequence of the resolve
of the latter body to defend Massachusetts
men in Congress from further outrage, “ nt
