FOR VICE PRESIDENT. JOIIX C. BUECKIXUIDGE, OF KENTUCKY. URMOCHATIC STATIC CONVENTION A t a meeting of the California Democratic Stele Central Committee, held in the city of Sacramento, on the 10th day of July. 186 A, It was resolved that a Ih mocrarie Stale Convention lie called. In meet In the city of Sacramento, on TUESDAY, the Vth day of September next, for the purpose of nominating two membera of Congreaa, a Clerk of the Supreme Court, n Superintendent of Public Inatruction, a State Priaon Director, and four Presidential Elector*. The Stale Central Committee suggest that Satnr lay, the 23d day of Augnat, be the day selected hy the different comities for the election of Delegates to said Democratic State Convention. The following Is the apportionment of representa on: By order: B. F, WASHINGTON, Chair’ll. It. F. Powi 11. Secretary. Democratic papers throughout the State please C ipy A Great Smoke. — A great deal of smoko ! and giut has been created, and n large quan- ' tity of ink has been shed, with regard to i misunderstanding between Got. Johnson, Col Zabriskie, and Gen. Allen. It appears from the Governor's statement of the facts, that he authorized the two latter gentlemen to go to San Francisco and ascertain if pos sible, the objects of the VigilaaceCommittee. Messrs Allen and Zabriskie claim that they hud full power from the Governor to effect a compromise between the Vigilance Commit tee and tbe State authorities. We believe this is tbe point of difference between tbe parties, and it certainly appears to us that tbe Governor has decidedly the advantage in the reasonableness of hit position, and auoh, we doubt not, is tbe opinion of every unprejudiced man in the State. It seems to us impossible that tbe Governor should have conferred the power claimed by the gmtlemen composing the committee, upon them, when it is well known that both Col. 7. tbriskie and Gen. Allen, sympathized with and supported the action of the Vigilance Committee. This view of the matter leads us to believe that the difficulty was occasion ed by an unfortunate misunderstanding be tween them. Tbe official acts of Governor Johnson have been characterized by a can dor and fair-dealing that entitles bis position to great weight in community, and all the “astonishment” that may bo expressed by the self-constituted committee, will not change the verdict of an impartial public The mildest form of that verdict will be that the Committee misunderstood the power Conferred upon them by the Governor. The San Francisco Herald.— This pa per cow dies at its mast head the names of Buchanan and Brcckcnridge, Previous to the Vigilance movement, the Herald ranked at the head of the newspaper press of the State. Attempts were then made by an un holy conspiracy of lesser lights to crush it out of existence. It has passed the ordeal, ani come out purified as by tire, and the tone of its editoral articles is that of tree metal. It has lately been enlarged, and wo hope to see it increase in size, until it is suf ficiently large to envelope Fort Gunny Bags and its masters. Important if true. —Madame Rumor has it that some three or four members of the Executive portion of the Vigilance Com mittee, were desirous of leaving on the last Steamer having pressing business just at this time, in the Atlantic States ! Wc can not of course vouch for the truth of the ru mor, and should be exceedingly sorry to see any of them falter at this juncture, as wo candidly think they ought to hang together. ‘ Oct or Town.” —We have received two xcellect communications from this writer Lut be has forgotten to send us his name, tot for publication, but in order that we may know with whom we are dealing. Will the author of “Out of town ” forward use bis name, or call at the office. Correspondents will please remember that Communications to receive attention must be zccoovaaied by tbe name of the author. Affair* in Saw Francisco.— The San Francisco Hcraid learns ‘ upon good au thority that it is the intention of the Vigi lance Committee, to arrest all the officers ot the City and County Government, lock up the City Hall and take the government into their own hands. “It is also stated, with what truth we are unable to say, in consequence of the myste ry which enshrouds the secret tribunal, which now rules over the destinies of this people, that after having taken possession of the City Hall, the vigilance committee will proceed to Sacramento, seize the State officers and the records, form a provisional government, and call upon the people to yield obedience to it.” Now, it is generally believed that after the execution of Cora and Casey, and two or thru# different shipments of prisoners, the Ootsrner of the Stats offered, through Messrs. Baldwin, Fcacby, Bottsand Munson that if they would disband, and surrsnder upjtbe arms belonging to tha Stnte which they had captured; he would recommend to the authorities of San Franciseo county not to prosecute them —would interpose Execu tive clemency if convicted, and would sug gest to the next legislature the propriety of passing a general amnesty. These proposi tions were rejected by the Committee, who still keep on with their secret plotting, oc casionally arresting one of the many wharf rats that infest San Francisco, to keep down the suspicion of the people. If their object is not to overturn the State Government, what is it? Fellow Citizens, “Think, and think for yourselves.” Oi-n Line Whigs for Buchanan. —The Boston Daily Times says among the old lino whigs of that city who have declared for Buchanan, are Col. N. A. Thompson, Otis Kimball, John G. Eustburn, Peter Harvey, (the fast friend of Webster) Hurry Horton, Col. John C. Boyd, Col. J. P. Bradlee, Capt, Edward Voung. I Seth Sprague, and other active and distinguished national men From Maine there are large accessions to the Democratic ranks from among the old line whigs—and so far from the apostacy of Hamlin and Morrill having any injurous ef fect upon the cause in the old Pine Tree State, it has bad the effect of stirring up our friends to renewed efforts. t The Pitteburg Union states the fact that Robert C. Walker, lat a whig member in the Legislature from Alleghany county, Penn sylvania, has taken the stump for Buchanan. In Connecticut Henry P. Graves, son-in-law of Gov. Dutton, the Know-Nothing whig Magistrate of the State, has come out against the Black Republicans and announ ces his dermination hereafter to vote with the Democracy. The Pacific Railroad Plank.— lt has been asserted by the very few mendacious prints in California opposed to the election of Buchanan to the Presidency, that the democracy of the nation are opposed to the Pacific Railroad project. It is upon this false k-sue.that the enemies of democracy seek to carry California for Fillmore or for Fre mont. In order that the friends of Mr. Bu chanan, in this vicinity, may be enabled to refute the contemptible calumny whenever met, wo publish the following resolution which was adopted by the democratic Na tional convention at Cincinnati : lirsolatJ, Thet the Democratic party rec ognise the great importance in a political and commercial point of view, of a safe and speedy communication through our own ter ritory between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of this Union ; and that it is the duty of ‘the Federal government to exercise promptly, all its constitutional power for the attainment of that object, thereby bind ing the union of the States in indissoluble bonds, and opening to the rich commerce ol Asia, an overland transit from the Pacific to the Mississippi river and the great lakes of the North. Gathering in the Streets. — Those who happened to be about the streets on So.nday night, were called together in front of Scncca Ewer's residence, and har raugued by several speakers, some of whom were in th® back-ground, but were laying the wires for a nomination for some office at the coming county election. General good feeling seemed to prevail, and politics was freely discussed, but which side was most popular in that crowd was a matter hard to solve. Few seemed to know or care the pre cise objects of the meeting. Big Saiwuk Claim. — At the hen 1 of Mor ris* Ravine is one of the most extensive tun nel companies in the ruble Mountain. An immense amount of labor and money bus been laid out One of their drifts has al rcady reached 000 feet—another 600. Their prospects are most flattering. The compiny is composed mostly of German sailors. They Lave the muscle and will to reach it, if it is to be found within two miles cf the base of Table Mountain. Lock-Jaw— We would suggest to our friends who are doing business on Mont gomery street, to drive down the nails, ns the sidewalk in front of their places of busi ness. They are really eery dangerous. A rusty nail stuck into one's foot often causes lock jaw. They tear skirts to ladies' drosses, and bottoms of gents pantaloons. A hit or a Wakk.— An Irish wake came off night before last, on the hill, at n place where they measure out giggers, night and nnd morning, to every mother's son Some one tread on somebody's coat-tail, and the row begun. The amiable landlady pitched in with a bottle. Some one hit her a blizzard—and to defend a lovelorn woman some one drew a pistol, and threatened to blow blazes out of them. It promised to be a very interesting fight till nippsd in the bud by tbs arrival of some one who said, “ Let there be peace,” end there was no more fighting. They were arrested. For further particular, tea court proceeding*. Fruit. —Mr. Oeo. H. Beach came into town yesterday evening, with about three hundred dozen of the most delicious and finely flavored peaches we have ever tasted. Some of them were twelve inches in circum ference. They were raised at Beach & Shep herd’s orchard and nursery, three miles be low Marysville, where they have the finest and most extensive bearing orchard and nursery in upper California. They have the choicest varieties of all kinds of fruit trees nnd vines, which they arc prepared to sell, in their season, at the lowest pricees.— Among them are 70 different kinds of peach es, and 40 of grapes—all selected with the greatest care. They "bud” from those that have been tested, and cultivate none others. The losses these gentlemen sustained last year by the ravages of grasshoppers amount ed to some $20,000, but this year their crops arc abundant and bring fair prices. Fatal, Accident. —We learn that anoth er fatal accident from the use ot hydraulic power occurred yesterday afternoon at Se bastnpol, on the Yuba river, in the claim owned by McKibbe, McCoy k Co. Their claim is a very lich one, and has a bank of more than thirty feet wash, a portion efi which, becoming detached, fell upon McCoy, and so crushed him that he survived but n few hours. Hs left a brother in this place, to whom the accident will be mctaacholy news indeed. The deceased was from Illi nois. Nkw and Elegant Gocds.— Mra. M. B. Newell, at the Ladies’ Emporium of Fash* ion, ha* a Millinery and Fancy Store that would do credit to any town in the state.— She has just received an addition of some beautiful goods, suitable for our gay belles, that we do not exactly know the name of, but moat temptingly hangs in her show-case “ a love of a bonnet. If 1 bad a wife 1 would hang it on her head. Public Imhkotkment.— lt is proposed by some of our citizens to open the road through the bluff and intersevt the main road this side Lynchburg, from Huntoon at We consider this to bo for the benefit of the town generally, and hope our oitizens will assist in building it at once. Live Stock.— Mr. Honshu w passed our otllce yesterday with a drove of the finest hogs we have seen in the State. Beet Catti.f —A. drove of 30 head of fat cattle of enormous size were brought to this market yesterday for slaughter. The finest beef that is butchered in California is cut up iu Oroville every morning. So say those who visit this town. Scientific Hair-Cutting and Somnif erous Shaving. —The Shaving, Hair-Cut ting, and Bathing Saloon of Messrs. White & Co., next door to the Empire Hotel, is a most inviting and neat resort. The artistes are very polite, and operate most skillfully. They shave so slick, so easy, that one hard ly knows it if he does not happen to see them do it. Heavy Freight. —Our go-ahead friend, Geo. Hall, brings from M.rysvillc, three times a week, B,OUO lbs. of goods to this market. Jit has the finest establishment — four the largest horses in the country —and he keeps them as sleek as mules. i.Q,Joe Rosenthal is raunufactoring Borne magnificent Jewelry, which he sells ut lc;s than Sun Francisco prices. Water Works. —Mr. tiurrutt is gelt.ng along finely with his pump lugs. He is .■quirting it all over town. Pacific Express.—We are under obliga tion» to this company fcrduwn river papers delivered yesterday. Watson will { lease accept our thanks or a cvutiuuoacc of hit favors. tor me Uuuo KrtofU. TO E IV Hope 0n.... I lope ever. Though darkness o’er thy path is cast, Let not thy gentle spirit mourn; For sure it cannot always last, A bright and glorious day will duwn— Then hope ou—hope iter. Let calumny seek to blast thy name. And round thee furious tempests rise, Ere long thou’ll win undying praise, A glorious tiiumphant prize— Then hope on hope ever. And when thy weary pilgrimage shall cease, And the reaper comes to claim his prize, Thy immortal part will speed in peace. To its natal place beyond the skies— Then hope on—hope ever. B, 8. M.
