to State Journal has been permitted to make
the following extract from n letter received
in this city from Dr. Robinson, the tree soil
Governor of Kansas. It is dated Leaven
worth, May -'Jib, 1850:
“1 am in the midst of another excitement
more violent it possible, than was that in
Raorameuto, It seems as though the devil
was to pay in this country, at the present
time, and no money in the treasury. lam
now under arrest and indictment tor usurp
ation of office and for treason, and expect
to he tried next September. I here is but a
htep from the sublime to the ridiculous, and
but one from the Governor’s office to the
gallows —soil seems.
Dr. Robinson, was one of the principal
participants in the squatter riots of Sacra
mento. in the summer of 1850.
Multum in I’akvo. — The New \ork Ex
press says of the Democratic nomination—
‘ The nomination is personally respectable
politically consistent, and probably the
strongest that could be made.”
The New York Mirror says—
“ Mr. Buchanan is a man of eminently re
spectable character and talent, and the very
best and strongest man the Democrats could
have named, lie will be a hard candidate
to beat.”
Beautiful. —There is a sentiment as
beautiful as just, iu the following lines.
♦• He who forgets the fountain under
which he drank, and the tree under whose
shade ho gamboled in the days of his youth,
is a stranger to the sweetest impressions
of the human heart.”
The Wife. — That woman deserves not a
husband’s generous love who will not greet
him with smiles as lie returns from the la
bors of the day—who will noi try to chain
him to his home by the sweet enchantment
of a cheerful heart There is not one in a
thousand that is so unlccling, so lost to “lo
ving kindr.;si',” ns to-withstand such inliu
once, and break away from such a home.
It has been eloquently and truly said,
that if Christianity were compelled to flee
from the mansions of the great, the acade
mics of philosophers, the halls of legislators,
or the throngs of busy men, we should find
her last retread, with woman at the fire
side. The last audience would be the child
ren gathering around the knees of a mother
—the last sacrifice, the silent prayer,
escaping from her lips, and beard, perhaps,
only at the throne ot God.
Remarkable Coincidence. —Edwin Booth
played in Flacerville immediately before the
nre- As be was ascending the hill on the
way to Georgetown, the tire broke out. In
Georgetown he played one night, and a few
hours after he lett, that town was burnt
down. lie next played at Nevada, and in
the afternoon of the day upon which he left
for Downieville, Nevada was swept away
