What is aTurnf.r ? — ln the recent trial of the German Turners for riot, in Cincin nati, some discussion arose as to the char acter of the German Turners’ Society, when Judge Stalle.one of the counsel said; The name meant gymnast. It was estab lished in Germany in connection with the the Universities, to promote and develop the physical man, and also for the improvement. of the mind. In Cincinnati, it was a social organization, which assembled together for gymnastic exorcises, and for the study of the sciences The Turners of that city had a library of over seven thousand volumes, comprising many scientific and valuable works. Lectures were delivered to them j both by Ger/nan and American born citi zens. The Society was also a charitable and benevolent one, the sick members being oared for, and the families of deceased members allowed an amount per week. ; Their meetings were not secret, and mem bers were at all times willing to listen to the suggestions or opinions of those not belong ing to them. Persons of all religious be liefs arc admitted as members. Old Proverbs — Better to be the head of the yeomanry than the tail of the gentry. Beware of a silent d<>g and still water. Daughters and dead fish are not keep ing ware. It is not easy to straighten in the oak the crook that grew in the sapling. There is many a good wife who cannot dance or sing well. You will never have a friend if you must have one without a failing. There is one good wife in the country, and every man thinks ho hath her. Lean liberty is better than fat slavery. That's hut an empty purse that’s lull of other folks’ money. One might as well be out of the world as beloved by nobody in it. He that knows useful things is the wise man. As we must render an account for every idle word,so must wo likewise of our idle si lence. He is a worthless fellow wi;o lives only for himself Depend not upon fortune, but conduct. Bo contented and thankful—a cheerful spirit makes labor light, sleep sweet, and all around cheerful. A Wonderful Curiosity.— On Sunday lot, at Springfield, says the Sonora Herald, the lower jaw of some monster was taken out a few feet below the surface by some miners ; they were offered §2OO for it. TVs curiosity has created quite an excitement in that camp. The remains are supposed to belong to a species of the Mastodon. The bone weighed over eighty pounds—was sev en inches iu thickness, and about three feet in length. There were several teeth iu it, in a good state of preservation.
