There can be no excuse then for those who
assume the ground of opposition and rebel
lion to the laws—to the authorities consti
tuted by themselves to dispense justice.
Resistance to unjust and tyrannical laws,
framed by the few, assuming to govern the
many, without allowing them a voice in such
regulations, is now generally recognised
among the free thinkers of the world as a
holy on i necessary duty. It must be ob
served, that there is a marked distinction
between rcsisl ; ug laws made by ourselves
and those which are set up for us by others
independent of our own action. Therefore
under a representative and rational system
of government, such as has been established
by the people of these United States, no valid
excuse can be ottered for violent resistance
to the laws He who is guilty of this for
feits all claims to the title of good citizen,
constitutes himself an outlaw, and has no
just cause for complaining of the conse
quences.
It would he well if these truths were more
generally understood and acted up to by the
population ot this Republic. While we as
sume to be free and intelligent, citizens, vc
appropriate to ourselves individually too
much freedom, without cultivating in a cor
responding degree that intelligence which
should regulate our actions. Thus do vc
change our freedom into unbridled licenti
ousness, and assume a superiority for out
private claims paramount to the rights and
interests ot the community with which wc
are associated. This foolish assumption is
the fruitful source of mob law. Men seem
to forget that they themselves have a hand
in making the laws of the land, and hence
follows resistance to the rules established
for the general welfare when they conflict
