House. —The Butte County jail is lull and running over. Sixteen regular hoarders, which is more than any other house in Bidwell can show. They speak of Sheriff Freer, as being a tine landlord—sets a good table, keeps clean rooms, and his at tachecs arc spoken of in the highest terms, the principle of which is the jailor, Howard Carey, who sleeps with one eye open in or der that the county’s unwilling guests may want lor nothing until his Honor, Judge Lewis, shall call them to a settlement for lor the deeds done hero intho body. The jail-room is 16 by 12 feet, and two cells at tacked. It is the coolest and mest airy re sort in Bidwell, not excepting Joe Buck man's Exchange. Religious.— Divine service will be held to-morrow by Ucv. Mr. Seymour. Tbo place of worship, we are told, is for the present under the big oak tree on Bird street. A town as large as Oroville, and with so great a proportion of families, ought to have some respectable place of worship. Churches that arc presided over by ministers of high intel lect, and whose words and deeds are worthy of example, are calculated to exert a bo'y intiiience in a community; belters the public morals, lessens crime, restrains from vice, and lead us on in the path of virtue, morali ty and respectability. I’ichsowal —Ex-Senator Colby, of Sacra mento, paid our city a visit yesterdey. He seems in the enjoyment of line health, and speaks of the success of our Democratic Nominees as a matter of certainty. F. R. aud 0. Ditch C«,arecharg b g &0 cents au inch for water. tlr.mhllrun Stale C'cnveuUon. We have heretofore noticed the fact that the Reps. of California were to have a State Convention, and did not intend to refer to the subject again, at least, until we had . witnessed the result of their labors. Our attention has again been called to the sub- I jeet by the reception of a Circular, issued by the State Committee. We hardly know why we were selected as a victim, to be bored by the reception of such documents. What in our offence, that the committee of the Republicans should run their Circular saws upou us. We are aware that the Repuhli i can party has many magnanimous and phi lanthropic spirits in its fold, who desire to do all that can be done to ameliorate the condition of the African family, that can be done without striking their own pockets. It is a party composed of magnanimous spir | its, whose wisdom is more than sufficent fur their own government, and generously of fer to supply their neighbors with the over plus of self-governing policy with which they are surcharged. They have found the true principles of self-government good for themselves, and they are determined to force their principles upon their neighbors. The principles they choose to uphold and sustain, they desire to force upon their neighbors. We expect the Heps, will beat the K. N.’s; but it is quite probable that they will have no better success in compel ling their neighbors to live up to their laws, than they deserve, and that, in a free gov ernment, is nothing more than sucli consid eration as the people shall choose to give them. Their sectional doctrines will be closely scanned by National men, and con fined to sections where the people arc over charged with the principles of self-govern ment. The success of the Black Republicans in California, will make no parjjtaubtr change in our State affairs, except 16 place in power men who think they they know mure than their neighbors, and arc dotornvitoed to compel other* to think and act as they do; but it would bo to place California in the position of a dictator, and compel her to as sume a position towards other States, which the older States were to generous to assume towards her. California framed her Consti tution without dictation from other States, and it will be sometime before she will as sume such a position towards other States— even if the Black Reps, should continue to issue circulars and hold State Conventions. Sad Accident. — A case of unpardonable carelessness occurred night before last, which came near destroying our city and burning to death a little boy. A little aficr dark a Mr. Reed was lighting a cigar lamp, and shoiwng how it must be done in order to en sure safety—campheno being a very danger ous article; he lighted the torch, and in stead of putting it into the machine where it belonged, ho stuck it into the bottle con taining the alcohol, which ignited instantly, and he deliberately throw it upon tho little son of our fellow citizen, Mr. Woodward— the hoy happening to ho standing by at the time—and burned the child’s face and neck most shockingly. He was taken to the rooms of his parents at the Orleans House, and skillfully treated by Dr. Green, who thinks he may recover. The cry of fire was raised, and a crowd gathered, hut tlie flames of the burning fluid were subdued without any pecuniary damage. Flat, Cherokee, Morris Ravine, Oregon City, Mesilla Valley, and J’c nee’s Ranch, arc all in a most flourishing condition. A great number are settling in these localities. Many families are among the new comers, which will give it an np pearance of pcrmancy. It bids fair to be come a thriving section throughout. There is a quantity of tillable laud between Cher okee and Messilla Valley, which, when brought under cultivation, will afford suffi cient products for home consumption. This is one of tho very richest mining sections in this upper country The great difficulty is a want of water. This will be furnished to some considerable extent very soon, by the ditch which is going forward, and will con vey the water of Little Butte Creek. Wo propose to visit all those localities very soon so that we may speak from observation in reference to the resources—both in an agri cultural and mineral point of view, more particularly the Tabic Mountains, which are incxhaustable in extent and variety of val uable minerals. Hamilton, the old county scat of Butte, has again been from necessity made the receptacle of our surplus prisoners The Board of Supervisors found it necessary to put the jail in repair. So groat a number of late requiring confinement, that the jail a> Bidwell was fouud insufficient to accommo date them. They will soon find ample quar ters Id our new brick institution at Oroville The Viuilanci: Commiite —By refer ence to a telegr spine despatch from the Marysville Express, to be found in another column, it will he seen that Judge lerry bus been unconditionally released. They could neither bend nor break him. It is also announced that the Committee are about to disband. We trust it may he so We should be pleased to see the Committee return to their senses, and by disbanding their infamous organization, and returning to their duty ns citizens, restore peace to a State well nigh ou the borders of anarchy Wo arc not among those who wish to insin uate that the Committee have bccu induced to disband because they feared the next steamer would bring intelligence from Wash ington which would place at tho disposal of the Governor the U. S. forces now on the Pacific, to he used against them We have no desire to seethe United States army and navy employed against any portion of the American people ; tut we prefer to sec even that than to see such an organization as the Vigilance Committee continue in session. God grant that vise counsels may prevail, and that the Committee may disband with out such proceedings. The fftet that the Committee are divided among themselves, and calling for tho election of a new Execu tive Committee, tenders it quite probable that the Committee will full to pieces; or, should they attempt to continue their trai torous organization will soon full un easy prey to the constituted authorities. Should they not have the good tense to disband, we can only pray to God that they may be (driven from the country they have dis graced. The Soiree last nioht. —This was one of those re-unions that we like to attend. — The room was not crowded but comfortably filled, and everything passed off to the en tire satisfaction of all who arc disposed to enjoy themselves. There was more beauty and fashion in attendance, than we have seen on any previous occasion in this town. The music was good, the supper superb, got ten up in Frank Carpied’s best style. Noth ing occurred to off md the most fastidious; and as the bewitching forms, tripped it light ly in tiic mazy dance, to the sound of volup tuous music, they looked like so many fair ics The arrangements altogether, wore gotten up ou a very liberal scale by Mr, Hedges, who will give more of the same kind from time to time, where those who like to “trip it on the light fantastic toe,” can have an opportunity. To the Killlorof lilt- ISutte Record. You fhall hear from me again toon. Yours truly, HOWARD K VOLNEY. Arms for the Vtu. Committer.— Three Three cases ontaing sabres arrived by Free man’s Express, on the Steamer Sonora. It may naturally be inferred, from this, that another squadron of the “Light Brigade’ will soon be charging round with their brigl t sabres drawn, making all sorts of imagina ry cuts and thrusts, to the infinite terror of nervous old ladies and pea-nut venders. Kt-Yi Rituals —Nearly every copy of the Sacramento American which wc have seen of late, has Lad something to say about their newly printed rituals. They do not appear to go off very rnppidly. Why the Devil don’t somebody buy some? Why don t the American start out bands of Negro Min strels, and let them, after giving an exhibi tion, go to work and form fhc audience into a K. N. lodge, ns they did last summer?— That is the way to get rid of the rituuls. A lodge of the Independent Order cf Old Fellows, will be instituted in this place, on Monday evening next. A general invitation is extended to all brethren in good stand ing, to attend, at the Masonic Hall. A Blnrk Ui|mlilltan Mr. The Snn Francisco orcan of tlie Black He publican!*, says that J. 0 Breckenrldge (*• cried “all his energies to deprive the State of California of a sacred Constitutional right —the right of way across this continent the right to ci j <y a system of uninterrupt ed intercourse with her sister States —the right to the construction of a continental railroad.” This is a gro-s misstatement of the facts, as the newly fledged organ should have known. Kentucky voted in favor of the resolution adopted by the convention. We should like to ask the S. F Black Re puolican organ, why it is, that the present Black Republican Congress docs not pass the Military road bill which lias been pass ed by the Democratic Senate. The organ knows very well that they will not do it,— They had a majority sufficient to do every thing 01.-e, except to make good their party professions. Why does not the organ exert its influence to compel its party in power to pass this Military road bill, instead of mak ing such statements about their opponents, and such shallow professions about a conti nental railroad. The Democratic Senate have passed it; let the Republican House of Representatives do so, and then their pro fessions will be entitled to some credit. By TcloKraph to Uie «'alifornm lx press. Juilxr Terry Uclfascd. San FiiANrifCo, Aug. 7, 8 r. m. This morning, when it was known that Judge Terry hud been released by order id the Vigilance Conimittc authorities, some dissatisfaction was manifested by a part ut the Vigilantes who advocated that Judge Terry should be sent away, while a largo number fully endorsed the action of the Ex ecutive Committee and Hoard of Delegates. So loud was the demands ot the former party that the Executive called a general meeting at d o’clock, to explain matters fully. The meeting which completely tilled the Vigil unco rooms, and was addressed by Smiley, Coleman, liiuke, C J. Dempster, and sevcial others, in justification of the course pursued. So far it is not likely that the two parties will agree. The mure ultra party arc crying out lor another Executive Committee, which as matters stand at present, will likely be chosen It being known that Judge Terry would go up to Sacrameiitoto-niglit.il large number assembled on Pacific street wharf As the bout from the .John Adams neared the Hensley, the large assemblage on the wharf gave a terrific shout which was an swered by the passengers on the Helen Hensley. .) udge Terry is escorted by a large dele gation of the Young men’s Deinociatic Club, of which he has been elected an honorary member.
