The accounts of the success of the miners in Wus vicinity, wc can assure our readers, is as correct as it is possible to make it with our facilities for arriving at the truth in those matters. It is the exact state of min ing affairs that we at all times intend to lay before the public, believing this to be the best course to pursue, and being perfectly satisfied that the mines hereabouts are not surpassed by any in the state, wc conceive that an exaggerated account, would be en tirely unnecessary, and injurious to us as a community. * In our issue of yesterday, when speaking of tome of the claims, wo underrated them. So say the proprietors. The Golden Gate Co., took out last week $1,254, instead of that amount in two weeks* Sulivan’s Co., also, did. much better than we put them down at. Lynch & Co., near Squire’s Boarding House on Live Oak Flat, are averaging $lO u day to tho hand. Ned Taylor’s claim pays about an ounce a day to the man. Ned is an old and practi cal miner, a perfect gentleman, aud it grat ifies us to hear of his success. Smith & Co. and Morris & Co., on Carpen ters Flat, are mining very extensively, and are just striking it rich. Their claims pay from $lO to an ounce a day to the hand. Police, Look. Out.—A thief was caught night before last, grabbing some wearing apparel from a ladles apartment, down at the lower end of town, lie was frightened away by the approach of tho fair one, whom the articles fitted much better than they woald'the thief | Pacific Railroad. Die Black Republican organ of San Fran cisco, thinks the Democratic Senate have exceeded the limits of the Platform adopted at Cincinnati, in the passage of the military road bill. The Black Republicans having asserted that the Democratic party were opposed to the construction of a continental Railroad, are determined to keep up the false statement. With all- their boasting about “P reuiont and the Pacfic Railroad,” they know that the present Republican House of Representatives, now in session, Will Not pass the Senate hill for a road across the plains, and they endeavor to draw public attention from their own delinquency by grossly misrepresenting the Democratic party. There lias been professions enough about this rnxtter ot a National Railroad. As a hobby, it has been ridden for yean, and mere professions upon the subject will not satisfy the public, or be the means of electing political demagogues to office. The time for action Ims arrived. The democratic Senate have taken the lead by passing the military road bill. Let the lower branch of Congress, which i» strongly Republican, pass this bill, or “dry up” their base slan ders about the Democracy. The San Francisco organ seizes upon the letter of Mr. Brent to the Democracy of Cal ifornia, explaining his course as a delegate to the National Convention, and extracts therefrom some devilish good Black Repub lican arguments. Indeed, the course of our delegation to the National Convention, has done more to place the Democracy of Cali fornia in a false position upon this question, than all the villainous misrepresentation that unscrupulous Black Republicanism can invent. Their cards explanatory of their treacherous course, arc eagerly sought for by the Black Republican and Ki-Yi organs, and are paraded before the people as the evidence of Democrats against their own party. To excuse themselves for their treachery to the democracy of California, these delegates basely misrepresent the Na tional Democratic standard bearers, and the party which honored them by making them its representatives. Their excuse is not a good one, and bears evidence of untruth up on its face, for the delegates had determined in caucus to pursue the course adopted, be fore the occasion which they plead in justifi cation had arisen, or was even contemplated. Those treacherous delegates, with their ex planatory circulars and cards to constitu ents, are the most effective Black Republi cans in all California. If they wish to aid that party to carry the State, why do they not corno out openly, and advocate Black Republicanism in an honorable manner, and not exhibit the unblushing impudence and hardihood to claim to be Democrats, and state that they opposed Mr. Buchanan, be cause Mr. Buchanan was opposed to a Pa cific Railroad, when every man in the United States knows to the contrary. We are dis gusted with the Black Republicanism and hypocrisy of the delegates, and trust that Mr. Brent’s may be the last explanatory epistle put forth by them. We doubt not the Democracy arc perfectly satisfied, since the explanation of the delegates is only cir j culated iu the Black Republican and Ki-Yi organs. ABravk Ofviclr. —A Mr. Jackson, who i acts as constable to Justice Jones’Court, was gent to serve some papers on a company wiio are working on the bill. One of the company defied the officer, and told him to leave or he would thrash him, which threat he proceeded to carry into execution, and rather of the two got the best of him. He came to town, told his story and took some of his friends with him to see that he was not harmed when in the discharge of his official duties. When they arrived, all were armed to the teeth, and looked somewhat bloodthirsty. The opposers of the law were supposed to- be down in a drift, and the company looked to their chief to lower him self down, when they would follow. He gave one ghastly look into the shaft, and weakened. We are told that had that been a grizzly bear's hole, the idea of making a descent would have been no more repug nant to him than it was on this occasion, when it contained '‘Sydney Ducks.” Bonv Guard. —One of city polioe, was called upon to settle a dispute of a business or private nature by one of our merchants, who by the account of fhe watchman, seem ed to think that his persou must be protected against the insults of his customer*. The case was argued with some warmth pro and con, and at last came near a set to with our guardian of the night. They parted howev er without any serious outbreak; Ihe busi ness man assuring the watchman that he should withdraw his support from any such institution as private police, the amount of which will bo felt by Capt. Bird, to the ex tent of fifty cents a week, when be collects the assessments next Saturday. Theatrical. A scent occurred at the Metropolitan, night before last, that was not laid down on the programme. It was the occasion of Mr. Hamilton’s benefit, and as the beneficiary had a right to do,he placed our yoang friend Harry Mighels in the box office for safety. At about 8 o’clock, when the citizens were gathering in, all were struck back, by the appearance of Constable I’attou. who pounc ed upon the funds in the hands of the ticket seller. The seizure was made at the in stance of Mr. Hamilton After a few min utes of deathly silence, Mr. Connor appear ed before the curtain, and announced in an audible voice; that Mr. Hamilton had seized the funds, and although the managers owed Hamilton £l-7, and tickets to quite a num ber bad been sold, and the liol lers present to sec the show, he (Connor) would not play; no power on earth could make him play. Mr. Hamilton, then appeared in his own defense, and said that be had nut received his salary, his lund-loni wanted his pay .and that humbug had been the order of the day among the management, and he saw shc nanegan going on, he, to save himself, had attached the receipts. Ffe appealed to the audience to say whether he was not right The crowd were unanimous in his favor.— Then it was interesting. The crowd rushed on to the stage—one said, give me back my dollar another said, it was, and had been a splendid d- d burning—another said it was a plan to swindle the public, &c.,and finally the uproarous audience retired with a very large sized disgust. It came very near a row at one time. It has, so far, under the present manage ment, been a succession of disasterous blun ders—a chapter of accidents in the history of the Oruviile drama. The Chapman's. —The closing of the en gagement, ami departure of this Company, is regretted by ail the patrons of the drama, in this vicinity. Circumstances, wo regret to say, over which Mr. Chapman could have no control, have rendered the position of himself and his company, very unpleasant and annoying in the extreme. The two com panies have, in consequence of bad manage ment and inexperience of the Usees of the Metropolitan, sustained considerable pecu niary loss. Both Companies possess merit of no mean order, and might have drawn crowded houses, but for the unnecessary ri valry existing between them ; consequently there has been no concert of action; and pie ces have been literally slaughtered, which might have been rendered with great effect, and to the entire satisfaction of our citizens. This has been apparent to the most casual observer, and is attributable to the faet, that some of those who undertook to cater amuse ments fur the Oroville public, were over stocked with impudence, and under par in brains, common sense and decency. Mr. Chapman has gone to Weaverville with his company, and we assure our moun tain friends, that he has the stock with him to afford them amusement of a high order. — His talented lady and daughter, the beauti ful Miss Julia Hudson, and the great favor ite Miss Kate Grey, who is not excelled in her line of characters, by any lady in Cali fornia, are among, the number. We bespeak for them that support and pat ronage, which their merits demand. Got a Ducking. —As one of our Mxys ville visiters was making ready to take his departure last Sunday, he rolled off with his spirited horse at a rapid rate, and be fore his friends had time to direct him on the right road—he no doubt supposing that all the roads leading out of Oroville must lead to Marysville—he went down Mont gomery street, and drove plumb into Fea ther river. The water was very low, or it might have been a serious mutter. As it was, a souse into the river was the extent of the damage sustained. He returned to town in a dripping state, and as the starch was tagen out of his good clothes* he concluded to let it dry on and remain with us over night. He might have had an .Uube in his hat. ___ _ ______ Indian Fight. — A fight came of! last Tuesday about two miles down the river on the opposite tide. It was between a tribe who have their raneberie down the river, and % tribe from the West Branch. The or igin of the fight wc did not learn. It was witnessed by several white men, who say they scut the arrows into each others ranks with savage earnestness. As far as could be ascertained, there were two killed and several wounded. (;orreN|iwnilenet' Mr. Editor: —lt is with pleasure I note the various improvements going on in Oro ville, but in one of them 1 cannot but ex press surprise. I refer to the building ercc ted on the north side of Montgomery street, in Dvti'ner gtrett. It has been occupied some time as a dwelling house, but is now converted into a store. From the improve ments going on around it, one would sup pose it to bo private property instead of a public street. What is the difference be tween erecting a house in the street at this end of the town, and the others. There, a poor hombre had his house removed not long since, because “it was i;z the street.’’ If the erection of houses in the streets is al lowed, there are several desirable localities left, and the future may be Bought with lit igation. If there is proper cause for the obstruction lei those who know it speak and satisfy those who do not. It is a question that interests ail ofour citizens, and if pos session is a title against right beyond legal redress, the ballance of the street will be filled up soon. iD- Id a communication from one of our citizens, which we publish to-day, in ref erence to improvements in general, and to building in the siiects in particular. He seems to complain and says that the location on which the house referred to is built, arc public highways. If this be the case, it is right that it should he stopped. It strikes us, however, that this cannot be regulated or mifrks and bounds defined strictly until the town is incorporated. HOTEL ARBIAVLS Orleans Hotel, Auk- 1-ith, ISSC.
