Novel Tiikout. —Tho late fearful
inundations in France lias set the phil
osophers and savans of Paris to sbecu
lating upon the probable cause of a ca
lamity which, with more or less vio
lence, afflicts the country periodically.
At a late sitting of the Accademy of
Sconce, a curious essay was read on
the subject, in which the idea was ad
vanced that the ovetflows of the rivers
are chiefly occasioned by the sirocco
from Africa. It is conjectured that
the hot blast in its course over the sea
causes a rapid and copious evaporation
and that the vapors are carried hy it
and finally condensed amid the cold at
mosphere of the mountains in the cen
tre, East and South of Fiance, where
they descend and flow into the plains
and valleys in fierce torrents, "hose
volume is swollen bv the waters of the
melting snows. This is fit least a plau
sible theory, whatever may be thought

The Count Lanscomb made a bet a
few days ago that he could make his

a distance of one kilometre harlward
in six minutes. The feat was under
taken In I ween (he Hound Point of the
Champs Elysees and the Obelisk of the
Place Concorde. From the Hound
Point to the crand entrance of the ex
ebition the Count walked his horse,
hut here he commenced to trot, and
from this point to the Obelisk he gra
dually pushed him faster and faster
until he arrived at the end,in five min
utes and thirty-seven seconds. The
last twenty rods were accomplished at
a rate of speed which put to the lest
the full trotting powers of some of the
horses mounted hy the witnesses of
