Miscellany. A New Kcad to the Humboldt. —The "Marysville F.xprrt .« states that Wtn Gamble, with .Fob T. Taylor, of Indian Valley, hud I'ointcd cut a road from Marysville to the Sink of the Humboldt —a distance not ex ceeding two hundred and seventy-five miles —which could he made passable for wagons at a cost not to exceed §5,000. The descrip tion of the route is as follows; From this city we pass «p Ik* leather river to Hamilton, in Butte -county, up the lelt had side of Feather river, leaving the west branth of Feather river to your right, and taking the course between the we*t branch of Feather mcr and llutte creek, until you strike near the head waters of Butte creek, which is the highest ground betwcen>*his and Honey Lake. From thence, on u straight course, through Humbug Val ley to Butte creek, which cross, taking a straight course through a level country to the north fork of Feather river at Lawson's Meadows. From this point follow Lawson’s «,Id trail northeast about five miles; then leave Lawson's trail at the left and follow up the northeast branch of the North Fork to a rich and beautiful valley, until you strike s*usnn river, which you follow down, getting -into Noble's ro ,d about four miles from Ho ney Lake Valley, which is followed about 70 miles, whe’c it strikes Granite creek. From •Granite creek you take the old Lawson road, keeping it until you strike the Humboldt, The whole road bears nearly in a northeast direction, and does not vary more than five ■or six miles from a straight course. The worst hill on the route has been improved by Butte county, for the small sum of §;100, w’hick enab'es a team of four yoke of cattle to haul 4,000 pounds, and 1.000 pounds more has been hauled over the road. For the •entire distance there is good crass and wa ter, tlio greatest distance intervening be tween water being eighteen miles.. A Girl Murheukd hv her Lover — A s nosl horrible and cold-blooded murder was committed recently in McKean township, about nineteen miles from Erie, N. V. The ■victim was a young girl; named Calista Cor nelia Allen, aged about sixteen. The mur slerer was a man of about thirty-five—Wal ter Hayt—who lived in the same neighbor hood. llayt. had for some time entertained :i pvssion for Miss Allen, and had made prop ositions oi marriage to her; and alleges that she hail promised to marry him: that they had several times agreed upon a day for the consumatiou of their union, but that she bad in each case postponed it til! another; ami that the very day on which he committed the horrible deed hid been appointed, by previous arrangement, as their wedding day. On the other hand, her family slate that she had never been engaged to him, and had no intention of marrying him, hut had al ways considered and treated his attentions as agiersecution. There is little doubt that this is the fact; and both his age and un seemly appearance seem to confirm it Hayt thad premeditated the deed for several days, and debated with himself for some time, whether to kill the girl or himself, but final ly settled down on her destruction, provided .•-he again refused. lie provided himself with a Colt’s revolver mid went to Mr. Allen's house. He found the youthful and innocent object of his pass ion alone, though her mother was in the house, and prjsscd his pioposition of mar riage. Bhe again refused, and told him that she would not marry him, nor did she wish any further attentions from him. She was sitting in a chair, and he instantly drew his revolver and shot her through the head,— }>!ic fell upon the floor, hut there appearing to bo still signs of life, be raised her up and laying her on asofa.sti >t her a second time through the head. Her mother appeared \ at the door and rassed theory of murder.— ! The wretch turned upon her, and as she ran tired at her twice, but neither of the shots took effect He then attempted to escape ; but, on seeing persons following hini.he stop ped and gave himself up. He seems indiff erent concerning the crime. He i> a tall, l ink, green, silly looking fel low; owns a farm and is well to do in the world. He expects to be hung. —Erie Con stitution.
