Hu m Quartz.— Mr. Dyer, of Dyer’s Ex press, informs us that a Quart/. lead lias liccn discovered within hnlf a mile from Spanishtown, which is believed by thos - e who huvo prospected it, to be supnssingly rich Wo did not learn tlio names of the lucky dis coverers, but there i- no doubt but tint it will turn out to be valuable. Ibat whole section of country is known to abound in Quartz; and some of the ledges now h.'ing worked, are proving to bo us rich us any in this vicinity. CuNVENiK.vr, —Oroville is better supplied with water than any town in California, save Sacramento. The main pipe is four inches in diameter, with forty-six feet head or pressure, at the reservoir. It will very soon be extended through all the principal streets in town. This is a work which is calculated to enhance the value of property, and also, to protect it, and is of more importance than any other unterprizo or public work that has been projected since the settlement of Uro villc. llkai.tii ok Okuvili.k, — Wc hear of some little sickness in our midst, such as inter mittent lever, and chills and fever At this particular season of the year, this is not un common, as in almost every newly settled valley in all countries—the inhabitants are subject to more or less of these diseases. As n general thing, we may safely say, that ours is a most healthy section ot country. Yuba County K. N. Nomination*. — The Know Nothings of Yuba county met in convention at tlie Keystone Ranch, on Sat urday last, and nominated the following ticket: For Senator, R. S. Mesick, ot Ma rysville ; for Assemblymen, Dr. D. \V C, Rice, of Marysville; Mr. Wyatt, of Boat river; Beaman, of Young’s Gold Hill; Mr, Clements, of Dry Creek; aud Mr. Harris n, of Buckeye Ranch. Kir Carson auainst Fremont —The Missouri Democrat says that Kit ( arson, the man on whose broad shoulders Fremont Ims been lifted into notoriety as an explorer, does not support his whilom protege for President Kit is a man of good, strong common sense, and knowing Fremont, as be oeccssaaily must, all through, like a book, it is by no means strange that he should de cline to lend himself to the scheme of a knot of Wall street speculators, to make thtir “ stool pigeon” President. The whole thing wears a look that every plain, honest man like Kit would “ put his foot on." Misunderstanpinij.—lt appears that it -light misunderstanding has arisen between the Board of Supervisors and Myers. Bird and Morris, in reference to the quantity ot ground ivhich was to have been appropriated to the county, for the use and convenience of the Court House and Jail. Tj*e Richest Yet. —Two pans of dirt were taien out of the Junction Claim on Saturd y last, that yielded four hundred and fifty dollars f _ /’■?'T>*iricl Attorney Jj J. Rlcine. <3 ly ing iacgerooily ill at the Western House, Marysrilie. '1 hr Urinoval—Akdlm. We would call attention to the communi •ntion in this morning’s issue, signed *Ohl iuard,’’which contains some sharp ques ion«, that will not be without their influ mce in determining, in the minds of our utizens, the right to the public square. The ground there taken is perfectly tenable, plain and comprehensive, and its correc - ness will be admitted by all who are not interested in fleecing the county out of a few thousand dollars now that our tax-rid den citizens have nearly relieved the county from its indebtedness, and brought its war rants up to par. We would not leprirc any citizen of bis rights in order that the coun ty may tic benefittel. if they have not already relinquished their right to the pub lic square, why do they not claim and oiler for sale th» Streets of Orovillc. But we will not discuss the question here. The county buildings arc on the ground laid out for a public square. Men have purchased lots at high prices from the parties who now desire to cut them of! by claiming it as “Block A,” and desire the county to pay them for it, or acknowledge their claims, that they may cut it up into lots, and again sell lots fronting on the square. The Board »f Supervisors, we are pleased to hear have declined doing either. The deed of the lot to the county executed by our citizens to the county, last week, we learn, is not acceptable to tha Board of Su pervisors, and it is necessary that another should he given, guaranteeing the title against any and all claims, whatsoever Such a deed will he acceptable to the Board who w ill pro seed to order a removal imme diately. t)ur citizens will Ik ar in mind that the deedconveys bat one-fourth of an acre, open which the I nildiogs arc located, leaving the Conflicting c aims to the balance of the square to be settled hereafter. We hope to see the whole square left for county pur pose-, and it it lias nut already been devote I to that purpose, desire •:> see the count} purchase it—hut the present proceedings look like an attempt to swindle the tux pay ors of the county, and before submitting to injustice, in order to secure a removal, we would see tbe county archives remain in the rotten tenement at Bldwcll until doom-day. The Court room and offices in the New Buck Building here, ire now completed and ready to be occupied. They will compare favorably with any in tho S'ate. Tbc jail department will bo completed during the present week. So soon as the citizens of Orovillc execute the necessary deed, a re moval will lie ordered by the Board. 1* S.—Si nee the above article was in type we learn that the Board of Supervisors have accepted tbc deed teadeied by our citisens. Laid sou Him. A man who was Ivorn on foreign -oil, worked himself up, by means of whiskey, yesterday, to the belief that all Americans must bo Know Nothings, and as lie felt a desire to reciprocate tbe favor ex tended by that Order, he thought to lay for the first one that hove in sight That one happened to bo our friend doe , a quiet citizen, but could not afford to be called names that were, calculated to injure the pride of nn honorable man-, and to avoid a difficulty, be walked out of ids way to rid himself of bis annoying opponent. The light ing man followed him up. and deliberately struck him. .lots reached hack and weighed him out one that went right under the left ear. He fell like a bullock, and stayed ther r some ten minutes, perfectly insensible to all passing events, and oblivious as to prejudices entertained by himself in regard to Nationality Flour— About 12 o’clock, on Sunday night, a fight came otl in front of tbc fight ing bead quarters, on Montgomery street. As near as we could ascertain, there wete two inoffens : ve men talking in front of tbe whiskey shop of Mr. McNaraee, when some oae, unknown to them, came up and dealt one of them a severe blow iu the face, knock ing ’win down and severely injuring him.— He thinks that he must have been struck with a slung-shot, or some other instrument, ns his face is badly cut, Tho-villain who made tbc assau’t made bis escape before be could be recognized. It was a most coward Iv attack, and such scoundrels should be punished.
