Ascent ok Mont Blanc nr a La
i>v. —A letter from Cbaiuouniz in the
.savoy Gaze tte, pays:
'The great event ot the day h**rc is
an ascent of Mont Blanc, commenced
l*v a Mr. Forman, an Fnglishman, and
hi.s daughter- They arrived sa'ely at
the Grand-Mu'cts at three m the af
ternooo, and by the lights ot lanterns,
left in the morning at two, to ascend
the giant ol the Alps. At ten o’clock
the small party arrived on the crest of
the highest mountain in Kurope, nod
after a half of an h nr, left on their
return, and reached this place at sev
en in the evening. Thu accent will lie
talked of as one of the w n hrs of the
valley, both on account of the t-hort
time employed (fifteen hours to ascend
and seven to descend,) and of the in
trepidity shown by Miss Forman, of
whom tlie guide speaks in raptures.
This young la ty is the fourtlu female
who has performed the feat. The pro -
gross of t he louri-ts was eagerly watch
ed during the whole day, and everv
window that commanded a view of the
path was bristling with telescopes like
muskets from a loop hale. The arriv
al at Chamouni.x was a perfect tri
umph. All the inhabitants and re-i
--dent foreigners went out to meet them,
and the whole re-entered the place
liended by the band of the guides in
full costume, and amidst the salute ol
cannon.’

shall follow eventually. No conductor

their tunnels are excellent, and their
street crossings admirable.
