Our Mineral. Wealth. —The compara
tively few permanent public works that liavo
been put into active operation in Ruttc coun
ty, have already caused a great increase’
ot tier capital and population, and she is
now demanding the attention of more
men of means, than any portion of the State,
'l i e construction of the South Feather Riv
er ditch, which terminates here, was but au
experiment, and gigantic young Orovillo is
the wonderful result of it.
Eighteen mouths ago a lew old dilapidated
shanties were all that marked the spot where
now a dozen daily stages arrive, as to the
most important locality in Northern Califor
nia.
Encouraged by the success of the South
Feather company, other companies have
been formed, and in less than a year the
boundless resources of the placers in the re
gion ot b'renchtowu, Spuniehtown, Thomp
son's Flat, and throughout the entire West
Feather country will be capable of develop
ment.
The grounds contiguous to Oroville, all of
which are more or less besprinkled with gold
are but a sample of the mineral lands that
lie along the course ot the ditches that are
being constructed from the head waters of
Unite creek and tho West Branch, along a
line of auriferous regions, at least sixty
miles i n extent.
Willi these works completed, we can but
expect that a real, practical, useful popula
tion, composed of men and families, whose
interests will be identified with the country,
will sooner or later come and occupy these
valuable lands, now incapable ol being work
ed for want of water.

ebrated funnel mines, has been discovered
m our immediate neighborhood, and that in
