A Tradition of tiif. \V AI.Nt'T.
Tflie walnut was, on its introduction in
to Englao, called the (i oil-nut, having
been brought from France in the thir
teenth centurv. It was formerly, by
herbalists and physicians, esteemed ex
ceedingly < fiic.vio m in diseases of the
bead, because it bore wlr.it they called
the signature of the head, (i. c. a fan
cied resemblance ; ) the outer green
>-kln representing the pericranium, the
shell within, the sku'l, r.mi the kernal
the brain. Towards the close of the
sixteenth centuey, walnuts were found
more tff ctive than cannon balls in the
"city ot Amiens which was besieged bv
the Spaniard*, then in arm to oppose
the accession of Henri Quatrc to ttie
throne of France. A small number of
Spanish soldiers, disguised as French
peasants, with a carl 1 -d n with sucks
of walnuts, came to the gate ami ask
ed admittance to sol! ther walnuts. On
the gate being opened for them, one of
the sacks, which was purposely left un
tied, fell (us designed) from the cart;!
the French guard, busying themselves
in picking np the scattered wal nit*,
were attacked hv the disgumd Soldiers, ;
then a party of Spaniards, who had
been in ambush n ar at band, rushed
forward, surprised and took the town

‘Trot !’ Horse started, so did T, half

to keep my heels turned well out, and
accordingly my spurs went in. Horse

Spurs worked covubuvely among his
bones, jump, thump, spur! Horse,
reared, sc zed his mane, l\icked up ,
caught his ears, and saved myself. It
began to grow exciting. Finally, horse
started off. Such a race ! Pulling on

The Duties ok a Mother. —By
tbc quiet fireside of home, the true
mother, in the midst of her children,

of angelic deeds, the noblest offering

amending and expanding souls of her

discovered an elixir which bestowed
immortality. No less than three
Emperors died after swallowing a
drink presented to them hy the eu
nuchs of the palace, sis the draught
that was to confer never ending life.
‘‘The host method of prolonging life,
and of making life happy,” said a
wise Mandarin to one of these infat
uated princes, “is to control your ap
petites, subdue your passions, and
practice virtue! Most of your pre
decessors, O, Emperor, would have
lived to see a good old age had they
followed the advice which 1 give
you!”
