(Drcuillr Duiii| 3Jntte 3Reiotil •"««! m. eauiKTTB, Editor, ThiirMlay, Vufmhrr 13lh, l*W>. Topic* of (he Dnv. 1 lie continued dry “weather, nl v 1 though favorable to the miners in tliis immediate vicinity, is, doubtless ;i serious misfortune to the majority "t farmers and miners throughout the State, \\ herever diggings are gup plied with water fJoni ditches, the drouth is rather beneficial tlxm oth erwise, the fact that the heavy rains arc liable to cause breaks in the ditches and otherwise incommode the miners. River mining particularly, is facilitated hy the absence of .stor my weather, but as has been the ease for two or three seasons past, tiie early rains of September and October cause such a rise in the mountain streams as to sweep away flumes and dams, thus rendering the subsequent dry weather unavailable to most of those as bo are engaged in this precarious species of mining. On the other hand, a large proper tion of the mines throughout the State arc dry diggings, entirely de pendent upon the rains for a neces sary supply of Avatcr to Avork them, and are so situated as to he unap proachable by ditches or other arti ficial means for bringing it on the ground. All sorts of methods have been tried to separate the gold from the dirt, but have all proved failures, and it is generally conceded that Ava ter is as useful and indispensable to mining operations us’it is to Steam boats. Another such a winter as the last *that of ’55 and ’SO) would prove ruinous to many of our moun tain traders and miners, and to the entire agricultural community thro’- out the State. As delightful as the present weather is, avc would willingly exchange about a month of it for a rain storm of that length, and would like to bargain for about two smart showers a week for the next six months. The independent and opposition press arc greatly troubled about the election of United States Senators. Now they have lost all show of elect ing Gov. Foote, or other K. N. bro ken-doAvn-at-homo migratory office hunters, they arc devoting their at tion to selection of candidates for the legislature to elect to that Impor tant office. The Post, r published at San Francisco, w hich, we believe, is a religious-K.-N.-Fremont sort of an organ, announces, with seeming au thority, that J. W. Denver will be presented before the Legislature as a candidate for that office. Mr. I), has done very well since he has been iu Congress, and if he chooses to pre sent himself as a candidate, let him do so. Rut his real friends should not subject him to the mortification defeat, and AVO trust those papers that have put him forward as a can lidate, will not insist upon '.'is elec tion, unless he desires them to do so. In that event let the consequences be upon his own head. No one worked more earnestly for hi# election to Congress than ourselves, and we are willing to admit that ho has made a good member. Rut the Democracy well remember Ins letter to Governor Bigler when he left for Washington, and also the charges which were brought against him at the last Dem ocratic State Convention, of his con nection with the K, N, order, These are •Matters of history, and as we are informer), susceptible of positive proof. The Democracy of northern California want a Senator who is radically and thoroughly democratic all the while. And we sav to the meddling opposition press in the southern portion of the State, “hands ofl!” The Democracy can make their own selections, without the promptings of .papers like the Post Alta. They had better turn their attention to the selection of one Sen ator from their own portion of the State, or the pleasing duty of select ing one for them may devolve upon the democracy of the northern portion of the State. The Altamcntions the names of M< ssrs. Latham and Washington, and Messrs. CJw in and Weller, and Col. llenly. These gentlemen are all good and able Democrats, who have rendered important service to the party during the late canvass, as well as in former ones, but a year or so residence in Sacramento, does not, in our estimation, entitle them to be considered [permanent residents of the northern district. Should the agitation of this question continue for a year or so more, we are fearful that the southern portion of the state would not contain talent sufficicicnt to form one Senator, and both would have to be chosen from the north.— We arc confident that the Legislature elect will choose one Senator from the north, and that they will go above the Capitol City to find the northern portion of California. How is it. — We never get the Butte Record until it is two or three days old. It is one of our most uselul ex changes, and we want it while fresh.— Express. The fault must certainty he either in the Orovillo or Marysville Post office, for the llecord is mailed regularly every day to all our exchanges throughout the State. Thank you dear Express for the good opinion you have of our usefulness, and allow us to say in re turn, that the Senior ami ourself, the Sub, (sometimes spelt with a C,) have a regular set-to every morning to get the first glance at your valuable paper, and being somewhat the stronger of the two, ho sometimes cleans us oat, and cuts us off with the Herald We will endeavour to provide for your regular receipt of the liecord in future. A Skt-to between two sons of the Emer ald Me came off yesterday afternoon on Downer Street, just opposite the I*. O. We did not learn the origin of the difficulty, but wc did see the fight, and a short and sweet affair it was. The combatants “haul ed off their coats and rolled up l hcir sleeves,” and one of them found it a ‘hard road to travel”—to victory, for after receiv ing two or three “sockdollngers” in the mug, he roared lustiiy that he was satisfied, but he made a mis-statcmcn&r for as soon as he was on his legs again, he commenced abusing bis opponent and declaring that be hadn't had fair play, and said opponent, seemingly desirous to settle the mutter sat isfactorily to all parties, pitched into him again, and administered the finishing strokes admirably. Tiie vanquished was the challenging party. At Largf:.—John Gardner, who was ar rested as being one of Tom Hell’* accompli ces has been admitted to bail in the sum of one thousand dollars, and released from the jail, wheiein he had been con fined siu*co his arrest. Michigan, a short time since In consequnce of an intense mental excitement, produced hy rending in the newspapers the details of cruelty inflicted upon, and the death of hi.- brother, ut the hands of the border rutli.u.s in Missouri. The post master at Chelsea attended the funeral, and took with him a letter just received at his office for the de ceased, and poet marked Kanzas. Ho was not able to present it until at the grave, when opening it it was ascertained tube from the supposed murdered man, slating that ho and his wife were well, were com fortably and happily located, and had not been hung, arrested or in any way molested. Cigars. —Anybody that wants n fust rate cigar, and wants to be waited on by the most polite and accomplished little fellow in Orovillc, aught to go to “Curley,” who keeps all kinds of tobacco fixins in the old Bank Exchange Corner. Leo Bail. —Pat Smith, the ruffian who committed the unprovoked assault on Mr. Miller, the night before election, was releas ed from jail on Tuesday, the charge on which ho had been incarcerated having been with drawn, and was granted a now trial before Justice Elliott. He was found guilty of as sault and battery and fined fifty dollars, and F. M Smith, Esq., his lawyer, becoming re sponsible for his re-appearance, he was turned loose, and allowed to try and make “a raise” of the amount of the fine. Some of his friends subscribed a part of the re quired sum, and the rascal, watching his opportunity, left them in the lurch. Search is being made for him. Contested Election. —We understand that .Mr. J. V. Jones intends contesting the election for Constable of Ophir Township, inasmuch ns the holding of a precinct at “Squire's House,” was not in accordance with the law which provides that all places for holding polls except m incorporated cities, must be removed one mile from each other. Admitting the contested precinct, and Smith Gambrel is elected, but with it excluded Jones is the lucky man. Such is the report only. The Robinson Family played the Little Treasure and Betsey Baker last night. As a matter of course, the playing was excel lent and the audience large and delighted. The graceful dancing of La Petite Susan and Master William wa| beautifully sylph-like; and as the Little Treasure and Betsey Ba ker, the “Fairy Star” quite outdone herself. Mr. Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. Thayer, Mrs. Soycr, and the entire company in fact, ac quitted themselves admirably. Not to see the Robinson Family, is to miss seeing one of the nine wonders of the world. They go to Forbcstown to day. Railroads in the South.— The Virginia and Tennessee railroads, designed to form a complete rialway connection from Nashville through Knoxville and Lynchburg, to Wa shington city, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York, will, it is said, bo completed within two or three years. The Ouadaloupe Mink — Mr. Bland, the Assessor of Santa Clara county, in his re port, says; “The Guadaloupe quicksilver mine is situated in a ridge of mountains only nine miles from San Jose. This mine has been undeveloped until within the past year, at which time it changed ownership, and is now in active operation, having about one hundred men employed, and, judging from its daily increasing richness, bids fair soon to prove, in point of wealth, second to none in the world.’’ Dead. — Dr. Auckland, the eminent geol ogist, died in England, recently. For six or seven years before his death, his mind was deranged Calieoania Paper Mill.— The first pa per mill in California is now completed It is situated sis miles from Tomalcs Bay, upon a small creek, the water of which will bo used as the motive power. It is owned by V. B. Post and Samuel B. Taylor, uu'J capable of manufacturing a ton of merch antable paper per day. The intention is chiefly to manufacture printing paper, al though the machinery is capable of turning out the coarser articles, such as wrapping, Ac. Cotton —A comparison between Ameri can and East India Cotton shows a difference of one hundred per cent in favor of the for mer. The cotton of the East Indies con tains twenty-five per cent. of waste, while that of the United States contains only twelve and a half. The fibre of the latter also excels that of the former. Debt or Mexico. —The public debt of Mexico is as follows: Foreign debt, $51,- 208.250; domestic debt, £4(1,000,000 ; dip lomatic conventions, $11,530,502. Total— -3102,088.912, These debts entail an annual charfie of #3,938,300 on the finances of Mexico.* Severe ow CvlikobmA.—The following cut at Californians, is taken from the New Vork Mercury. It is very severe and has too much truth in it to be very palatable: California, by the votes cast in the State, is the eleventh in the confederacy, but tak ing the prpubiiii.n is only the twenty-fourth state in the Union. Thi* is caused by there being mure fuil grown meu in pr«*p»a lion to the population than in any other State The Ualilornims are disj used to grumble at ti e condition of affairs, beoiuse it reduces flic influence of the Stale in tiic Electoral Col lege, where it has only four votes; but says the Philadelphia Ledger and we entirely agree with it, they cm alter their condition themselves much more readily than the con stitution can do it for them.
