Manufacture of Steel hv Kr.EC' tricitv. — Ihe London Mining Jour, nal contains an account of some < xp*-r --imenls, by which, in contradiction to the ordinary method of manufacturing Ptccl, it is proved ttmt a process has been discovered of converting iron into steel hv a current of electricity, pis-ed through the iron when placed in a fur nace, and embodied in charcoal, where by an itmuens sight of labor, time and fuel, is the more immediate result. The operation of the conversion of iron into steel in this manner gives a great' er power of governance to the operat ors inasmuch as the application of the latter fur certain amount of carbon be ing taken, absorbed, or concentrated, and amalgamated with the iron, and thereby increasing or diminishing the action of the battery, different <[nalis ties of steel will be produced with a certainty, regularity and efficiency, which hitherto, under the ordinary pro ccss of manufacture, has been the ob ject wanting. Nor Wise Knoucii to Wen a Queen. —As an evidence that the ol den spirit of aristocracy, which, by placing titled men over its armi s dur ing the Crimean war, to the exclusion of really skilful and exeperioncod sol diers, proved so disastrous to Knglaml, is not diminished in that country, des pite of their late unfortunate experi ence, may ho adduced from the oxaui' pie of the appointment of the Duke of Cambridge as the Commander-in- Chief of Britain's forces. The Duke, it is said, has no military capacity whatever, and is known for nothing but his first cousin*hip toQuoen Victoria, who it was designed he should marry. This he might have done had ho had sufficient energy to woo Ins cousin, bat, like Modus, in the play, lie did not know enough, and Prince Albert crept into his place, and was successful. Certes, a man who has not sense enough to court a Queen, when he might make her his wife, is not lit to be a Couunauder-in-Chief of armies.
