(DtouiWj Juiiq 3Sntte Ittorb. o«os h cioiiTTi, Editor. Arovillc, Sunday, November I7tb, ISS«. Topics or the Dav. \\ c have been favored, since the election, with a copy of the Sacra laonto American. Before the elec tion the American seldom found its way to this office, seemingly as if conscious of the fact that it was out ■I the contest and of no consequence. Ihe last twor or three numbers we have seen, remind us of the palmy ■lays of General Allen, in Marysville, when the cares of office hung not heavily upon him, dragging down and coining into filthy lucre, the better feelings of his nature. There has not been, during the year ending on the 4th of the present month, there ! as not been an article in the Amer ican which the General’s firmest friend could recognize as the produc ts of his pen. They all emitted the offensive miasma of the May weed, found in abundance along abandoned Roads and Ridges! But since the election—since the defeat of the Know-Nothing party —beaten < badly that there is not a “grease t'l'ot*’ left of it —for the Republicans elected more Members of the Logis o laturo than the Know-Nothings— since all this has come upon his party toe General “is himself again.” He is in his element—he evidently feels at home in his scat, and the Editorial “toga” hangs gracefully upon him. llis brilliant pen esohews the theme < f defunct Know-Nothingism, and lingers with melodious numbers upon Democracy and democratic champi ons. The glorious theme of Democ racy, was a favorite one with the General, since the days of Jackson, and it is doubly dear to the General now, when he finds himself the Know Nothing State Printer to a Demo cratic Legislature ! Only to think of the gallons of ink, the General will have to shed upon virgin paper, by the light of a taper, upon the Democracy’s head, to make his prin ting bills reach as high a figure as they did last year. But it will not avail. The democracy arc for re trenchment and reform, sir ! and we should not be surprised to see a great saving effected to the State, in the item of printing, during the present session! Is there anything wap v Cj O nanlmous about that idea, General ! A year or two since, the General was decidedly in favor of a northern man for Li. S. Senator. Now, the American speaks of the claims of the portion of the State in which he for merly resided, somewhat sneeringly as the “g-r-c-at n-or-t-h.” If the American does not cease such talk, we shall get up a quarrel with it much more pungent than the present one promises to bo. The Region of mining country in the neighborhood of Forbestown, Ilansonville, and the new town of Highlandville, is likely to become ore long thickly settled with miners and traders, if the placers through which the Forbestown Ditch now passes., idevclope as much mineral wealth as the projectors of that work anticipate. We are told that from the fact that the ditch is completed, thus enabling the miners to pros poet the diggings thereabout, there has been recently a very considerable in crease of the population in those towns their vicinities, Through out Hutte County, wherever a suffi cient quantity of water could be ob tained to enable the dry diggings tu be Worked, the miner has almost in variably been well remunerated for his labor, and ditches have always proved capital investments for the stockholders. For want of the re quisite capital to conduct huge oper ations of this kind, those persons who arc willing to invest their labour and time in such business, are compelled to solicit the aid of European capit il r ts. Our own men of means arc loth to invest their money in such undertakings, but regard them with an eye of suspicion, as they do all other mining operations, and seem to forget that they are indirectly in debted to the miners for their own fortunes. California capitalists should re member that in helping to developc the mines, they are not only doing “the State some service,” hut are taking the surest method of building up a strong security for their own fortunes, by keeping the wealth of the State from being taken abroad, as a large portion of it must, if the mines are to be worked by those whose interests and sympathies are centered in England and elsewhere. Law Intelligence.— Ninth Judicial District Court.—Thomas Wells Referee. Ma tilda Goodhart vs. Joseph Goodhart. Thin is an action for Divorce. The testimony having been nearly all taken before the ref eree, will all be in by II o’clock, A. M. to day, when the cause will be argued by M. II Farley, Esq., for the Plaintiff, and C. F. Lott, Esq., for the Defendant and submitted. Begging.—We noticed a blind man, ac companied by a friend acting as pilot, solic alms from his better-seeing fellow men on Saturday afternoon. Grading Myers Street. —A subscrip tion was put iu circulation on Saturday, for the purpose of raising tunds fur putting Myers Street in repair. It needs it sadly, and we trust the requisite amount may be raised at once, and the work commenced without delay. The rainy season is near at bond, nnd the grading had better be done now, than delayed until the rains of winter render such operations impracticable. Fatal Causally. —To Mr. Hoskins, the polite agent of the Robinson Family, we arc indebted for the following account of an ac cident that happened on Saturday morning on the Forbcstown road, about two miles this side of the Board Ranch. A teamster driving a wagon loaded with lumber, was killed by being thrown off the loud, by the breaking of the rope with which the wheels were locked, thereby precipitating the wag on against a tree and crushing one of the wheels. It is supposed that the wagon pass ed over his head, killing him instantly. The deceased was engaged in teaming for the Huncut House. His name was Thomas Scott. Fire. —About 'J o’clock uu Saturday mor ning. a Stable belonging to Mr. Savage, sit uated in the rear of his house, on the come’ of Montgomery and Lincoln st., was found to be on fire. It was luckily discover ed iu time to prevent its getting underway, and was extinguished before any great dam age had been done. The Fire originated by children playing with matches. We have had several narrow escapes lately, and they should act as admonitions to our citi zens to keep a more vigilant watch and to observe greater care iu prevention of these serious accidents. Accident. —A man whose name we did not learn, was thrown from a horse on Satur day morning, and in the fall had his arm broken. The horse is the same that threw “Limerick” over his head a day or two before. The beast bad better be allowed to go to grass, if these are samples of bis be havior. Waylaid by a Lion. —As B. Difiis, of Trinity County, was crossing one of the mountain > iu the northern portion of the county, iu company with a friend, a Califor nia lion, six feet three inches in length, sprang from a covert upon a mule he was riding A dog, which was accompanying the pariy, immediately seized the lion by the throat. He received five shots before he fell dead. The next Legislature. Tne following are the names and politic* of the gentlemen who will compose the next Legislature, os far as heard from : SENATE.
