Political and The atrical printing innat be paid for on delivery. The a*>ore will ho .trolly adhered to. Watchri and Jewelry. —Our enterpri sing townsman Geo. E, Smith has just re* pienished his stock of Watches, Jewelry, &o. By an advertisement in another col amnof to day’s paper it will be seen that he advertises to sell hunting cased gold lev er watches for fifty dollars. When the time O'day, wrapped np in gold, can be had for ■aoh a paltry sum ns fifty dollars, there is no excuse for anybody's being without a watch. We advise everybody to go to Smiths and see what a superior stock of time-pieces and jewelry he ha* on hnnd. Quarterly Muwsn.—We are request ed to state that the regular quarterly rnect of the M E. Church will commence here on to-morrow evening. A discourse will be delivered at the Court House, nt early candle lighting, by the Rev. Mr. Bland. The usual services will be held during the day by Rev.-Mr. Tansy. The quarterly meeting will continue through Monday. Go its Lemons.— A Lemon was arrested in San Franoisoo on Wednesday charged with Grand Larceny. Quartz Convention —d he Quartz Con vention is being held in San Francisco, The only business as yet reported is the election of offioers for tho ensuing year. Lratherheadkd.—They nre now taking Dagorreolypes on patent leather, Some of the pictures thus taken nre life-like, while some of them would'nt bo known away from home, from “a side of sole leather ” A Wholesale Scoundrel. —Archibald Sterrdtt is the name of a most accomplish-d and experienced rascal lately arrested in Ran Francisco. Some forty burglaries have been traced to him. Archy is undoubtedly a very imprudent if not dishonest person. Its thinks of removing to Marin county, Silver Cop.—Steve Ford, our redoubta ble horse-racer, showed us a silver cup yes- which he receives together with a hundred and fifty dollars in cash from the State Agricultural Society, for the bust ex hibit of a California bred racer. Butte was well represented in the horse exhibition. Shark Oil.— Oor friend Lowell, up the Bay, has presented us with two cant of shark nil. He has taken about two hundred and fifty gal ions of oil this season Shark have not been as plenty in our Bay this year as last. Lowell owns a floe placo up the Bay, and when the shooting season com mences we expect to be a frerquent visitor to his premises,— Hinubo/dl Times. We are curious to know what an editor •xpaots to do with two cans of shark's oil. Maybe they use it up in Humboldt to fry dough nuts in, Stealing Pistols.-— A man named Rave lin S. Lewie stole two Derringers the other day in San Francisco, so tho papers say We should Judge there was a Devil-in 8 Lewie; but there is a heap bigger devil iu Archy Stcrrit. —* Moorevilie. —We learn from Col. Shields, who arrived in town yesterday from Moore vllle, where he resides, that the Cascade Ditch is approaching completion and will probably be finished in six weeks at farthest. The Col- tells us that the question has been mooted of changing the name of Moorevillo The substitute proposed is "Cascade City.” This name ie certainly more appropriate than Moorevilie, f r several reaeous. First ly, there is already a Moore-futon in the county, and it it often difficult to make a distinction between the vtlle and the town. Furthermore, Moorevilie ie in Cascade Town •hip, is located on the "Cascade Canal,” and user nod above all, "CowcadaCity" is a much prettier name than Moorevilie. Let the change bo made. Humboldt all Right, —Humboldt coun ty has shown its oolors, and they ore of the right stripe. She gives Currcy a majority of 147 and a like vote for the balance of the Douglas ticket. She has likewise elected a Douglas man to the Assembly. Good for Humboldt. She proves herself worthy the name she iffar*. The old Baron would go tbs same way if he bod a ohanee. Or Course. — Mario county gave a large majority fur the entire Lrcompton ticket. At goes the prison so goes Marin.-Tlncer vilie Register. The result in Marin may be attributed to tbu Governors’ influence at the brick works —"OS a statesman.” A California Matson. —The San Fran* cisco Time* says: ‘‘Merced Ortega, wife of Jose Castro, now living in the city of Montery, in this State, bM borne thirty six children to her present husband—fifteen males and twenty one fe males. The first twenty children twine—a hoy and a girl at each birth. Dr. Saxe, of Bants Clara, gives us bis personal assurance »t tho above statement,’* Jio "hall breed*’ about that female. Dali)' Niuprndrd. With to-Jny’i is*uc end*—for the present at least—tha “Dally Butte Record.” On Saturday next, and thereafter regularly upon the same day our paper will appear a( a Weekly. There are various good reasons for our making this change, some of which we will give. Since July 14th 1850 the Record has been issued in Orovilte, daily, (Sundays excepted) Our firat issue was well received and the little fellow grew, and some months since reached ite present size. It was tho first and is the last daily published in the mine* of California. The experiment, although not as successful as we could wish, has by no means been a failure. It has supported itself and “held its own,” and we are sorry to feel obliged to bring it to an end, but like a majority of mankind we desire, while maintaining a respectable position in tho world to try and lay up something for a rainy day. In short, we hare been working for glory long enough. Were times as encouraging as they were a year ago, wo should still continue out daily Issue ; but they are not. In the fall of 1850, our voting popu’ation alone amounted to nearly 1,000 ; a year ngo it numbered about 1 ,COO while the last poll list shows our number of voters to bo less than 000. There has been according to these figures a de crease in our “free white mule population” of more than one-half iu two years. With this decrease has coma a decline in bu siness. Store*, and consequently adverti sers have become fcv/cr, and rnonrfy— prin ters’ money—more scarce. The fire, and its calamities, Frazer llivcr an 1 its disas trous effects and all the other mi fortunes that have befallen tho town and the State at large have contributed to bring about this state of things, and while wo observe many of our neighbors iu other kinds of business, economising, wo feel bound to do tho same in justice to ourselves. Wc shall therefore appear to our kind readers and ootem)armies but ouoo a wc'k henceforth, (until times grow better; ) but wo assuio them, that if cluso attention to our sanctum ami a desire to excel in the “art preservative" will help us to issue u readable, amusing and instructive sheet, such they shall have Should anything turn up to render it necessary or important for the Record to again appear as a Daily, our nrrrangcmcnls arc such that a very few hours notice would suffice for prepara tion and a return to this our morning’s garb. Wo hope that “tho times” will speed ily justify such another change. It may not he improper herewith to state, that having lately made large and import ant addltitions to our j )b printing depart ment, we are now ns well prepared ns any office North of Sacramento to execute every description of bonk, card and poster printing in a superior style of taste and execution. Oood bye then, until next Saturday, when as tho show bills say, “look out for something startling.” Tine Sohoonkr Eli*aiietii Owrns.—The schooner Elixabcth Owens, Capt. A. C. Bo gart, arrived on tho 7lh last., says the Al ta, from Colorado river via Quaymas and San Diego, The sobooner, on her trip up, had hard weather, and the captain was for ced to throw overboard a portion of his car go, which consisted of wheat, hides, and silver ore. This is the schooner about which so much lias been lately said, ns having taken the notorious Jack Powers to Lower California. It appears that Jack got aboard of the schooner at Black Point, the captain not knowing tho character of Ills passenger. After duo time tho vessel arrive! at Ouy nias, ami Jack went ashore, nnd made him self quite conspicuous. Tho vessel after wards went to the Colorado river, and lias returned, ns stated above, witli an assorted cargo, consigned to 11. E. Uaimond. Istkrsaii Arraißs—A gentleman iu Nnpa is 'eying to prove that tho earth’s in terior is a molten mass. He proves it to his own satisfaction entirely, in the Bulletin. — Ex. Wo think it can he proven from develop ments made at the Table Mountain in Tun lumo county that the bowels of old Mother Earth are filled witli blur mass. Sai.mh*> Fishkky, —The Union tells us that tho run of Salmon in the Sacramento has largely increased within a few days Some fitly boats are engaged in catching these fish, the average yield per boat being from seventy to ninety, daily. The aver age weight of the salmon is about twenty five pounds. A Story or Qxnxral Thumb.—Galig natti, noticing that Barnum had passed through Paris, on Ids way to Baden, where he proposed to exhibit God. Tom Thumb, tells this story of the young “General.” Tho general lias now ntlainrd his tweu ty-first year, nnd though “in mind a man," is" in bulk less than a baby still.” It is told of Idm that in a recent angry discus sion with his mother, in whose favor ho had recently made his will, the dame monaced bis little per-on with n flogging, unless ho complied with her wishes. But Tom, not withstanding, continued to hold out, until finding himself suspended in mid air in one hand, and the birch ready to be applied in tho other, he roared out at the tap of bis in fantine voice : “Mind what you are about, mother; if you hit me I'll change my w ill you may depend on it V' and the birch, as by enchantment, fell harmless from the uplifted it and. Vicky Dklicatx. —A, St. C, Denver, Ad ministration candidate, is the Seif-Constitu ted Clerk of tho Board of Supervisors to canvass the election returns. This is a very delicate ti.sition, indeed, for a candidate, hut harmonises witli a family weakness. ‘Our brother,' the Governor of Kansas, was Secretary of Stale, and cauvasse I the re turns when he was a candidate fop Congress. riacernt/e Regufrr. I>o(lonn Hand. We have never been farther on the road to Honey Lake, than to Dogtowu, and us to the road between Fence's Ranch and that place, we can testify that it is the very best mountain road we ever saw, and they say that from Dugtown through to Humbug, with the exception of a short distance at Cbapparal Hill, the road continues just as good as that over which we travel led. If such is the esse, and we have no doubt it is, it certainly is a wonder that even the influence and misrepresentations of Government officials have kept so much of the emigrant travel on tho IMncerville route. Why there is just as easy and pleasant a buggy road from here to bogtown as there is from here to Marysville. The road from Pence’s up over the hills, is, most of the way cut into the volcanic rock of which the hills are mainly composed, and the travel that lias already passed over it has really “MacAdamixed" it and made it as firm and clean as one of our eastern turnpikes, while in no place 1* the grade steep enough to cause any serious difficulty in the ascent of teams. If the the county, or the State, or the general government can do anything to direct the overland immigrant travel over the Honey Lake and bjgtown Road, one or the other or all of them ought to do. it at once. i hMttng the Dnwi. Tlio Union of Thursday publishes the fol lowing under the head of Telegraphic from Han FrnncUcnt Nathaniel Oray, undertaker, is charged with re-paintiog and re-selling coffins used for the interment of bodies to bo sent East, and also substituting wafer instead of alco hol in putting up bodies for exportation. The charge was made to the Grand Jury by adi charged coachman of Gray's, now in the employ of another undertaker, but they wouhj not give it consideration. Gray de nies the charge, and asks fjr a stay of pub lic opinion. .vVf A witty friend at our dhow suggests that Hio I’lnntns should steer clear of pret ty girls and «i:d horses, as one recently ran away with Ids body and the other witli his lie-art.— Plumas . Pride Comks 1! evoke a Fall.—The San Frsncisco Times says Ah Chong, who re sides on Jackson street, has fur a long time been putting on airs—so say his envious neighbors. Ono way and another they have sought to bring him to a proper spirit of condescension, by afflicting him with petty vexations At the next bouse they have made noises to prevent the man’s sleep, when they knew he was tired, and a cat that he loved mysteriously disappeared. Num berless annoyances have hern practised, hut the proud Mongulion would nut even de scend to a remonstrance, until yesterday A pailful of dirty wulcr was thrown before him as lio stood on the street. Me rushed into Ihe bouse from which tlio slops were thrown, mi'l catching the first lady he met by the neck, he pushed her into the street, and washed her face with the fluid in the gutter. Meanwhile a second discharge de luged h th of the panics, after which the bathers separated. The neighbors flitter themselves with having secured the atten tion of the rich man.
