Arrival of the Sonora.
The steamship Sonora arrived at San Francisco
on Sunday last, bringing three days later news from
the Atlantic States, a synopsis of which we find in
the Vnion of Monday, from which we condense the
following :
The Norwegian ship Catarina arrived at Quebec
on August 23d with several persons sav'd from the
wreck of the ill-fated Austria.
The British brig Esperanza was fonnd in the Gull
in distress her Captain having d ed and the crew
til being sick of fever. The steamer Orizaba towed
her into Apalachicola.
The Republicans of New York, held a grand rati
fication meeting at Cooper’s Institute. Horace
Grcely. Judge Edmonds, Senator Wilson of Massa
chusetts and other big black lights were present
and made speeches.
The American Express Company has been ap
pointed agent for the great Galway line of steamers.
The Crystal Palace in New York was totally de
stroyed by fire on the sth of October. The Fair
property of the American Institute was consumed.
The statue-; of Daniel Web-fcer were among the val
uable articles destroyed. The total 1 ->-■» is estima
ted at 1,000,000, of which sum the American Insti
tute loses about 500,000. There were some 10,000
people in the Palace when it took fire, yet, strange
to tell, no one was seriously damaged.
The Atlantic Telegraph remains in fatu quo.
Wm. Preston of Kentucky, has accepted the ap
pointment of Minister to Spain.
The steamer Washington was to sail from New
York on the 20th, to connect with the Hermann.
The latest dates from Vent Cruz report the exten
sive prc\'alcnce of the fatal remito.
On the night of Septemlier 25th a large maga
exploded at Havana, killing 24 persons and
wounding many more. Ninety large, new sugar
houses were tumbled down by the shock, and many
other buildings were damaged. Cause of the ex
plosion not known.
Dissolving The Union,—Tom Corwin, in his
speech accepting the nomination to Congress, said:
“1 have seen a!) mt th. eo dissolution* of the Un
ion. (Laughter.) When I was in the Senate. an
honorable gentleman solemnly assured n« that if a
certain bill was not pa**ed the Union would be dis
solved the next Thursday, about ft o.clock in the
evening. (Renewed Daughter.) Well, Thursday
and ft o’clock came and went, and the bill was not
passed, and the Union was dissolved 1 suppose, but
it came together again the next minute, and was
more firmly cemented than ever before.’’
Wonmsbfi'l AcniEVMKNT if Tree.—M Garvani,a
French machiui.t. has it is said, perfe ted bis aerial
ship, at a co-t of 300.000 francs, and made a. voyage
to Algiers, Africa, and back with it—a distance of
fifteen hundred miles from the starting point. The
average speed was almost one hundred miles an
hour, the v*»yage <>c< upying eighteen hours. M.
Garvani is to make the attempt from Havre to the
city of New York :»< soon as he has further tested
the character of Ids invention by a few short trips
over the Mediterranean and its neighboring prov
inces.
Vick ‘President Breckinridge.—Wo have seen
& private letter from a gentleman residing in Ken
tucky. in whbdi the writer states that he ha* had
a conversation with the H »n. John C. Breckin
ridgo : and that th« Vice President freely and earn
/•stly expre'-ed himself in favor of D vtgj is’ re-elec,
turn, and de dare- his willingness, if it w nld con
tribute to that end, to visit Illinois to make address
es in his favor.
. The announcement of the name of the Vi *e Presi
dent by the Danites a- a speaker at their meetings
in this State was wh dly unauthorized. Chicago

gine Company, at tin fire in Vance’s Dagm-rrean
gallery, the otherevening. A little boy whose name
we could n«*t learn, overln* ring the gentleman
speak of his loss while attending a ball in Musical
Hall. forthwith procured a torch, and after an hour’s
search, found and brought them back to the delight
ed owner, who rewarded the la 1 liberally. Smart

A Strong Ally i r Dorans.-—J. C. Jones,
a Senator fr-in Teuno *■<•, ba* takefa the stump f«--
Dn-igl.is in Illinois. He arrived at Soriagfield
September Idth.and addressed an immense meeting
on the same day. His speech is highly spoken of
as an able and el »qnent effort, ctilt i dug the ques
tion broadly and stating the points with force. Ex
Governor Jones was formerly an Old Line Whig,
and was an opponent of James K. Polk for the of
fice of Govern r whom he beat twite. He sub-e
--*q no’illy became an ardent advocate of the election
"of Buchanan, and has since acted with the Dem-
Jocritic party. The Washington Union has ’ Fully
indorsed Jones’ zeal for Buchanan and the Demo
cratic cause.— Sac. Union.

British naval forces at that point extended marked

French authorities, headed by the Prefect and the
military commander, were especially attentive and

Horrible,—Night before la«t a domestic broil
arose between Daniel Devine and bis wife. The
woman was in bed with her dang iter, a child about
five years old. Devine, extinguishing the light,
went to where they were lying, and, mistaking the
HtUe girl for her mother, deliberatcly stooped down
and bit her nose off. dissevering the wnole of that
member from the face—a deed too horrible aim >st
to think of. The brute was. of course, arrested on
two charge*, one of disturbing the peace and the

the Express of yesterday under the telegraphic

S. P. Storm-. India’! A c-at of Nome Cult, was
fot nd in a field early this morning, near Sam. Neals
Ranch, having been thrown from his horse, last
night, while «m his wav from Neale’s to Lowery’s to

he was robbed, of about five hundred dollars, and
his gold watch, and when found, his pocket book
and valuable paper.-, among which were some
thousands of dollars in drafts, were s ‘altered upon
the ground. It is supposed the robber waylaid
bira tn the dark, frightening the horse to produce
the fall. He was brought here, considerably but not
dangerously injured and bruised : says he was in
sensible from the fall till three o’clock this morning
when he found his saddle and bridle place 1 near
him. and his horse tied to a tree. He attempted to
crawl away on hi- hands and knees, but was com
pelled to remain till fortunately discovered.
We learn from Doctor Smith who came down yes
terday fr>«m Chico that Mr. Storms is much braised
about the shoulder and hips and will doubtless be
confined to his bed for - u.io days.
A Compliment. —The London (C. W.) Free
Press, published in a British dependency, where the
good people go to church a whole family of them,
in a cart drawn by a single ox. while the horses
ruu wild and gather bur- in their tails ; where men
live iu the old cottage on the little old farm where
their father was born : where the pear trees are the
big timber ; and where niggers are at home ; where
fish suffer ou Fridays while pullets plume them
selves on the doorstep : the Free Press says"civili
zation has in some degree jxmetrated into Califor

born in California. One is blind. The whole num

Astonishing.—We learn that a twig little over a
foot in length, was brought to this city a day or two
since, with fourteen j>cars hanging thereon, each
