NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Report of the Hospital Physician. *To the Honorable Board of Supervisors of Butte Connty; The undersigned, appointed by your Honorable Board, physician to the Connty Hospital, begs leave to submit his first quarterly Report, commencing fr rn ihe l»:th dav of August last, for ihe informa t ion of the Hoard- Since the Hospital was placed in my charge, a« resident physician, we have passed through the -xklie-t reason of the rear; and the present i . re tlian all former years has l>cen noted for the genera! prevalence of a febrile epidemic of a mild f< ;rr.. confined principally to the town of Oro ville , i its immediate vicinity. The excellent lo cation of the H «pital has this year been tested ; it is situated conveniently to the county seat, and upon the bluff above the malaria arising from the dec <mpo Jion of vegetable and animal matter In town and along the banks of the river. The loca tion has lieen r roved this year to be decidedly healthy ; for, not withstanding the many cases which have been treated daring the quarter, only eight death- have occurred, and lhe>e cases were be yond tlie rea»h of remedies before their arrival at ihe hospital: while at the Sacramento Hospital out of one half of the number of cases, In the month or Oft- :. ix deaths occurred, as appears by the re port ot the attending physician. This speaks not only well for the general health of Butte county but it i- evidence also of the fact, that deases in this part of (.hidiornia readily yield, as a general rule to j 4 ,<.; ,p. ~i:d treatment in comfortable quarters. Thousands can testify to the many radical and j>erfecl cures effected ; and it is well known Unit he is the only one in the State who has made a thorough and perfect cure after nil the advertis ing quacks have failed. A Pi aetical treatise on Venereal, by DR, C. If. TO ZER. Sacramento, There are no maladies to which the human family is liable of deeper importance, either in a medical or msral poin: «»t v;cwt than those arising from impure sexual intercourse. A- medical men. it is our business to look at disease merely as it »iT*-«-La life and hea,th; and our efforts are directed, not t<» the reformation of man’s vicious pro* pensi ies. but to the mitigation of his bodily sufferings. It is iu this abstract sense we write ol Venereal Affec tions. And it is in this sense that the Doctor should address himself to their study. H his feelings are all' ed to influence his professional pursuits, his qualifica tions will necessarily be limited to those subjects th a:i* most agreeable to his 'tastes To become an en lightened practitioner, it is as essential that he should be a lib.ral and anient one ; and affections, in their na ture repulsive to delicate sensibilities, be regarded in no other light than as morbid phenomena of the living body The whole business of the medical art. when we take a low view of it and regard it only as labor, is a disa grocab e one. In any lorm, diseasa is unpleasant to look upon The sick chamber affords no pleasant Mghts. The physician is made the witness both of physical pain and mural infirmity, struck by disease, the attractive parts «»f man - s.itu-e are clouded over, his pride is bum bled; his intellect is disturbed ; his whole character, in a won!, is transformed. Too often alas, is sickness the consequence of his own folly; selllindalgence, the grat ification of appetites. the exhausting toil of avarice, the fever i-h labors for human applause, all produce their baneful. fleets upon the cousiitution Bui to the medi al attendant, the moral aspects are nolle have any in* tiuencc npon his skill or his cures. At the best, human nature is bat weak. This is the first truth for a medical maxi t-» learn: and in whatever way tin- weakness is exhibited, the philanthropic hea will feel that it is a pleasure as well ;i« a duly, to relieve bodily infirmities, whenever however they appear. Thi is the higher and nobler view ol medical science. It devotes itself to the mitigation of pain, the abatement of disease, the restoration to health. In doing tills, its minister mu-f be the spectator ot much that is disa vrueaMe. Rut he is rewarded by the hdiy satisfaction of tceling that although personal comfort is sacrificed and -j in os thy is otten painfully excited, yet it is through Mich a r«md that Benevolence has the wideal scope, and met is with the richest return for its lal*>rs. 01 all the affections that afflict man. there is no one more terrible in its consequences than Syphilis. |»r <ad lula-: it is t * the person who first contracts it, frightful as frequeiKlv are Us ravages in his constitution ending occasionally in destruction; yet it is a disease of deeper interest, and more to be lamented when transmitted to offspring. Children oilen come into the world with the disease hideously manifested to the eye, covered with Mutches and sores; with wrinkled faces, having the ap pearance of old age; and it is probable that every par ticle of th** living organism is equally tainted with the poison. When such & condition exists, it cannot be doubted that life will too frequently be short and full of pain. Scrofula. Consumption, and other diseases that are sometimes heriditary, are in many cases, its fruit; and one way to stay Uie devastating march of those fear ful fatal affections, is. as far as practicable, to Eradicate Syphilis from the world. Would it not seem that a disease so prevalent and direful, ought to excite the dr- pi. , * interest among the medical men. bolii as re spect- its true pathology and ats treatment ? What ex cu-.* can he * ff-r for his ileficiency. who calls himself a surgeon, and yet does not even recognize the disease when _?:o M.*es it, ami is ignorant of the best means of checking it and preventing any falureevil consequences? Whoever has a just appreciation of the medical ar f . will not s ki.aw any difference in the respect ibility of diseases All maladies are alike fit sub jects for h*- care anl reflection; and the only distinction that he acknowledges, i> that which arises fro n their greater or less gravity.
