RECOGNITION GIVEN
Annunciation Day in Catholic
Churches of City Duly
Observed.
THE ORIGIN OF THE DAY.
Appropriate recognition was accord
ed yesterday sis annunciation flay in
the Catholic churches of t lie city.
In Great Britain it is commonly call
ed Lady day; in Fiance, Notre Dame
4p. Mars (Our Lady of March.) This
day is held in the Roman Catholic
rhurch as a great festival and in the
Anglican church as a feast, in com
Tiienioration of the message of the An
fe Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, int'onn
f UK her that the Word of God was le
rome flesh. It is a very ancient in
stitution in the Latin church. Among
the sermons of St. Augustine, who
died in 4.'!0, are two concerning the
festival of the annunciation. The an
nunciation was made at the time the
Virgin was living at Nazareth.
The calendar of the Anglican church
drives the following: Jn representa
tions of the annunciation, the Virgin
Is shown kneeling or seated at a table
reading. Her emblem, the lily, is usu
ally placed between her and the angel
Gabriel, who holds in one hand a
scepter surmounted by a fleur-de-lis
on a lily stalk; generally a scroll is
proceeding from his mouth with the
words "Ave Mara grata plena," and
sometimes the Holy Spirit, represent
ed as a dove, is seen descending to
wards the Virgin.
r There is an idea prevalent among
a few that the Roman Catholics wor
ship the Virgin Mother; this is wholly
erroneous, for they only hold a deep
regard aud respect for her as she was
the mother of God when the "Word"
was made flesh."

Interest is shown locally in the dam
age suit now being heard in the circuit
court at Hamilton. Ohio, in which John
D. Pults, cashier of the bank at College
Corner, seeks to recover $H,ooo from
the Chicago. Cincinnati & Louisville
railroad company for the death of his
wife. The wreck in which Mrs. Pults
was injured so badly that death en
sued, also caused the death of Miss
Jennie Holland, the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. W.
Corner, and the
ons of this city.
Holland, of College
niece of Charles Ly
Upon the conclusion
of the testimony of Mr. Pults, the coun
sel for the defendant moved that the
court instruct the jury to bring in a
verdict for the defense, alleging Mrs.
Pults' death was due solely to her own
carelessness. This the court refused to
do on the ground it was a matter for
the jury to determine as to how far
Mis. Pults was responsible for her fate
through her own carelessness. Tes
timony for the railroad company began
yesterday. The estate of Mrs. Pults
has a suit of $15,000 ponding besides
that of the woman's husband.
The accident, in which Mrs. Pults
was mortally wounded and Miss Hol
land lost her life occurred two years
ago last December. Mrs. Pults sur
vived lier injuries until last week,
when death resulted. Kver since the
accident she had been under the care
of a physician and specialist at Cincin
nati. One arm. which suffered severe
injuries, had been the cause of constant
suffering and a number of the nerves
and ligaments were removed by an op
eration in the hope of giving relief.
The accident to the Holland girl re
sulted in the loss of both arms and
both legs.

GENNETT.
March 24, 25, 27 and 28 Clark's Com
edian's. March 26 "The Sweetest Girl in
Dixie,"
Vaudeville at the Phiilips.
Saturday, a special matinee for
children will be given at the New
Phillips and as this week's bill is a
lively one they will be pleased by it.
One of the hardest parts of a vaude
ville program to make interesting is
the musical end. Few have succeed
ed better at this than the Imperial
Musical Trio, which is at the New
Phillips this week.
Clark's Comedians.
Clark's Comedians, headed by
Richard Bly, a mental wonder, are
not appearing at the Gennett today be
cause "The "Sweetest Girl in Dixie"
has the right of way. The Clark com
pany will resume on Friday after
noon and continue for the remainder
of the week.
"The Sweetest Girl in Dixie."
The Galveston, Texas, News, says of
tonight's offering at the Gennett:
Two appreciative audiences were
entertained yesterday at the matinee
and evening performance of "The
Sweetest Girl in Dixie." at the Grand.
Tt is a play full of beart interest,
clean and wholesome throughout. It
deals with old Southern aristocracy,
with a designing villain from Northern
districts, who is from the type of
which carpet-baggers were drafted. A
farmer mortgages his homestead and
places himself at the mercy of the vil
lain who desires to marry his daugh
ter. They were on the verge of being
dispossessed of the ancient home
when the hero, a dashing Yankee cous
in, comes to the rescue to the discom
fiture of the villains, aud the delight
of the "darkies."

By an estimate made by Capt. Jack'

Watson as a gubernatorial candidate,
the Sixth district congressman is giv
en 640 votes on first ballot. Wilson
Roose, manager of the campaign of
Charles Miller claims votes for
his candidate. Gowdy claims to be
sure Watson is about "on votes in the1
lead of anv of his competitors. The
Captain says he feels assured his can
didate will be nominated very early in
the convention. Hugh Miller, another
candidate is making no claims as to
the first ballots but will be found with
Tot? votes on the last ballot. This is
the number required for election and
is another way of Mr. Miller to say he
will be the choice of the convention.
