Anty Drudge Visits the School.
' Schoolteacher "Why are you late, Theodora?"
Theodora "Please, Miss Brown, my mother was so busy
stirring" the boiling: clothes in the washboiler that
she couldn't get us our breakfast and dress us in
time."
Anty Drudge "Theodora, you tell your mother to use
Fels-Naptha next Monday, and I'll guarantee you'll
never be late for school on account of the washing."
The old-fashioned
boiling is uncertain
in its action on dis
ease germs. Epi
demics of typhoid
fever have been
traced to the min
gling of clothes in a
washing, done in the
old, boiling manner.
Fels-Naptha soap,
while it is fatal to
germs, contains no j
substance which will
harm clothes in the
slightest manner.
This is a scientifically-proven
fact. Be
sure and get the gen
uine Fels-Naptha. It
has a red and green
wrapper, with direc
tions which you
should follow care
fully.
Mrs. Frederick, W. Packard, one of
the leaders in the Chicago Anti-Cruelty
Society, has declared her intention
of tagging every abused horse in the
business part of the city. For this
purpose she has had printed tags
reading. "Please ease this collar,"
"Please fix these blinders," "Please
pad this Baddle," and so on. Mrs.
Packard says the tags save a lot of
time and she has found that the driv
ers have just as mush respect for them
as for her verbal admonition.

The Baccara (France) glass factory
has just produced a new class of glass
which, when heated to boiling point
and then plunged into water at freez
in point, will not break. The principal
object was the making of safety lamp
tubes superior to those made of the
Jena product. The composition of the
glass is , says the Revista Minera,
roughly 70 per cent, bicarbonate of so
da, 13 carbonate of manganese, 9 ox
ide of zinc and 5 oxide of lead.

New York, Jan 6. Reports of fric
ion among the leading interests of
the Rock Island Company, rumors
that Daniel G. Reid was to go abroad
and that he would retire from the
board of directors of the United
States Steel Corporation, caused a
break of IVz points in the common
stock of the road yesterday and a
decline of more than 3 points in the
preferred stock.
The financial district had heard a
great deal anent Rock Island since
the sensational movement in the stock
a fortnight ago, when it jumped from
50 to SI and back again almost in a
flash, and the matter is now the sub
ject of investigation by the Stock Ex
change authorities. More recent ope
rations in that and allied securities
have not served to allay the alarm
then created.
The rumors had it that very sedi-
ous differences had broken out among
those who control the property and
an open breach was hinted at. These
were denied in responsible quarters,
but the enormous volume of Rock Is
land Stock traded in 230,000 shares
at steadily decreasing values caused
many misgivings, the more so since
much of the selling seemed to emanate
from Rock Island brokers.
Another factor was the failure of
the directors to act on the preferred
stock dividend at their meeting yes
terday. This stock has paid no divi
dends in several years.
Trip to Europe Confirmed.
Reports that Mr. Reid, one of the
most prominent of the Rock Island
groupe, contemplated an early depar
ture for Europe were issued at his of
fice, but the details were not concern
ing Mr. Reid's plans were not vouch
safed. Unloading of thousands of shares of
Rock Island comomn stock on the
Stock Exchange drove the price of
that security down from an opening
price of 54 to 50 and opened the
flood gates of countless reports.chief
of which was that Daniel G. Reid,
one of the controlling interests in the
railroad, was reducing his commit
ments preparatory for the trip to Eu
rope. Whether Mr. Reid was gelling
any of his holdings in Rock Island
could not be learned.
The governors of the Stock Ex
change will act next Wednesday on
the report of the special committee
appointed to investigate the recent
sensational skyrocketing- of Rock Is
land stock.
A high official of the United States
Steel Corporation said this afternoon
concerning a report in Wall street
that Daniel G. Reid would retire from
the board of directors of the company:
I can not credit it. None of the di
rectors have spoken to me about Mr.
Reid's retirement and no meeting has
been called to consider any such matter."
