THIS IlICmiOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM, FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1912. PAGE THREE. TEXAS WILSON MEIi liOLD AJMEREIICE Siope to Elect Forty Dele gates for Him from the Lone Star State. OTetleaal News Association) AUSTIN, Texas, March 1. Political Interest la Texas la centered In a con ference which U to be held at Waco tomorrow by friends of Woodrow Wll aoo, who expect at that time to lay the foaadatlon for an aggressive fight to wlect forty delegate! to the Democratic national convention who will be in fa vor of the nomination of the New Jer sey governor for President The Wil son partisans in the Lone 8Ur State appear conldent of capturing the en itfm delegation, but feel they should 'wage as aggreasive a light as if they regarded the result In doubt. As the result of the Waco meeting it is ex ucted that a vigorous campaign for la Wilson delegation to Baltimore will bo maintained up to the time of the 'hold Ins of the State convention or the Btate primaries, if the last-named sys- tm of selecting the delegates Is adopt 'ed by the State executive committee. There appears to be a popular demand for the holding of a presidential pref erence primary and in connection -with the Waco conference tomorrow there will be a separate meeting of 'Democratic leaders from various parts 'of the state to consider the matter. Ltscusalng the political' situation in Texas, with respect to the chances of Woodrow Wilson securing the support of the Texas delegation, Judge Cato 'Sells of Cleveland, who is chairman of the executive committee of the Woodrow Wilson State Democratic : League, says: "We are not only optimistic, but our confidence In the situation ! justified by reports, coming through a system atic organisation In practically every county In the. State, which indicate that at least three-fourths of the Dem ocrats of Texas are in favor of the can didacy of Governor Wilson, and that Texas will send a solid Woodrow Wil son delegation to the Baltimore con vention." The term refers to the form and style, not the sex. An examination of any kind of coffee will show that about one kernel In ev ery twenty-flve Is quite round, like a bean, while all tbe others are fiat on one side, like tbe half of a split bean. These round or male berries are alwsys found on the young, vigorous, new wood of the previous year's growth at the end of tbe branches. The old wood produces flat berries only. Each "pod" or fruit of the coffee tree contains either two common flat berries or but one round one. The substance of tbe fruit in the one case all goes into tbe single male berry, and In the other It Is divided among two flat ones. This undoubtedly accounts for the greater strength and richness of the male berry. In private plantations, where tbe trees are carefully pruned and cared for and the ground well cul tivated and fertilized, tbe coffee is al ways of liner quality and tbe propor tion of male berries is larger. The round berries may be seen in all kinds of coffee. Rio. Ceylon. Maracalbo. Mocha and other varieties contain them as well as the Java. Exchange. CALIFORNIA'S BIG TREES. They Were First 8en by a White Man. John Bidwell, In 1841. It was on June 20. 1841. that John Bidwell discovered the "big trees" of California. He was the first white man. so far as we know, who ever be held those monarcbs of tbe forest. Nine years later a hunter named Dowd whs led into tbe company of tbe forest kings by a bear that he was chasing, and it was by Dowd that the knowledge of the monster trees was spread abroad, but to Bidwell belongs the distinction of having been the first civilized man to gaze upon the wonder ful trees. Tbe "big trees." as the mighty se quoia are called, are found In Calave ras county. Cel.. chiefly In two "groves." the Calaveras and the Marl' posa, at an altitude of about 5,000 feet above tbe sea. Tbey are probably tbe remains of extensive woods belonging to a long past epoch. Unfortunately few of them are left, there being only a few hundred all told. These mighty conifers are easily the most remarkable of all trees both In age and In bulk. Tbey are from 200 to 400 feet In height and from 15 to 40 feet in diameter. Louisville Herald. Chinese Complexions. A French writer has given in La Presse Medlcale the results of his ob servations on massage in China. He remarks that the exquisite complexion of tbe young Chinese women is due not to enameling, as has been sus pected, but to careful manipulation of tbe face done by expert masseuses. They begin by a gentle pinching of the cheeks between tbe tips of their fin gers, which lasts fully ten minutes, then apply lotions on absorbent cotton, then an unguent, and finish by knead ing the cheeks with an extreme deli cacy of touch, always proceeding from the nose and commissures of the Hps toward the ears. This Is a harmless and physiologically correct process which can be recommended In cases, rarer than they should be, where tbe physician Is consulted concerning a faded or otherwise unattractive com plexion. Where Israel "Murmured." As soon as our loads were arranged and the riding camels selected we mounted and rode off across tbe desert or plain of El-Ka'a in a northeasterly direction, aiming for the Wadi Hebran. Tbe wind was blowing hard and the sand stung considerably. In ancient times El-Ka'a waa called the Wilder ness of Sin. This was the place where tbe children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, lusting after the fleahpots and bread they had left behind In Egypt, and this was where God. hearing their cry. sent them man na, which was supplied for the next forty years. This desert presents an awful picture of desolation, for. with the exception of some busbes that per sist in growing in spite of the arid sur roundings, all that the eye meets are bowlders, sand and graveL Wide World Magazine. (National News Association) BOSTON, Mass., March 1. Tbe opening gun in the campaign to awing Massachusetts into the Progressive Republican column at the election next fall will be fired tomorrow night. Tbe local committee of the organization has completed arrangements for a mass meeting to be held at that time in Tremont Temple, with Senator Moses E. Clapp of New Jersey as the head-line speakers. The personnel of the speakers' list is taken to indicate that the affair ia to be a Roosevelt demonstration, though the promoters of the meeting declare that its sole object is to boom the Progressive cause in this state, without regard to ayn individual candidate. Tbe political situation in Massachu setts this year is regarded aa peculiar, and unless all signs go astray the Old Bay state, for many years looked upon as rock-ribbed Republican, will be as well worth looking after the G. O. P. managers as some of the other states that have been known in the past as "doubtful." Encouraged by the re-election of Governor Foss last fall the Progress ive Republicans propose to see what they can do to prevent a solid delega tion being sent to the Chicago con vention for President Taft. The Pro gressives say that Governor Fobs' re election proves two things, first that there is a strong Progressive element in the state which is willing to support a Progressive candidate, and secondly that a great many Republicans are dis satisfied with President Taft and his administration and took the only means in their power to show their disapproval by voting for tbe Demo cratic candidate for governor. The President's championing of reciprocity, say the Progressives, was resented by the farmers, who voted for Gover nor Foss, not because he was opposed to reciprocity, but to show their dis approval of the President's action. Business men, they also say, voted against the Republican candidate for governor as a rebuke to the President for prosecuting the trusts. At the same time, it is apparent that President Taft still has many warm and faithful friends in Massachusetts and the old-line party leaders express confidence in their ability to keep the state in line for the President's re nomination and re-election. One of the stumbling blocks in the way of smooth sledding for the Roosevelt boom here is the attitude of Senator Henry Cabot Ixdge, for many years past the ac knowledged leader of the Republicans of Massachusetts. Senator Lodge, though a college mate and life-long personal friend of Colonel Roosevelt, Ib unalterably opposed to some of the latter's policies, particularly his sup port of the judicial recall, and it is not believed the Senator can be pre vailed upon to support the movement for Roosevelt's nomination. FOES TO SUCCESS. Oen't Be a Victim ef Timidity, Shyness or Self Consciousness. Timidity, shyness and self conscious ness belong to tbe same family. We usually find all where we find any one, and they are all enemies of peace of mind.' happiness and achievement. No one has ever done a great thing while his mind was centered upon himself. We must lose ourselves before we can find ourselves. 8elf analysis Is valu able only to learn our strength; It la fatal if It makes us dwell upon our weaknesses. Timid, shy people are morbidly self conscious. Tbey think too much about themselves. Their thoughts are turn ed inward; they are always analyzing, dissecting themselves, wondering how they appear and wbat people think of them. If these people could only for get themselves and think of others they would be surprised to see what freedom, ease and grace tbey would gain, wbat success in life they would achieve. Thousands of young people are held back from undertaking wbat they long to do and are kept from trying to make real their great life dreams because tbey are afraid to jostle with the world. They shrink from exposing their sore spots and sensitive points which smart from the lightest touch. Their snpersensitiveness makes cow ards or tbem. O. 8. He knew it was not "spring fever" fcr his health failed and, to use his own words in a recent letter, "I could not sleep, had no energy or ambition and could not do my work properly. "I must say that Vinol has done me wonderful good for I feel strong and ambitious again, just like I used to be fore my health failed. I rest well at night, have a good appetite and no more nervousness, all because I took j-our excellent tonic. Vinol."
