Holding Sessions During Holidays. INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 22 School marms gathering in Indianapolis for the sixtieth annual convention of the Indiana State Teachers' association registered a terrific howl today against the custom of holding the annual meeting during the holiday season. The Insurrection is headed by Miss Katherine Beeson of Lafayette, where she is principal of the Centennial school, and other so-called "suffraget educationalists." Miss Beeson and her followers declare that if some women were on the association execu tive and managing board things would be different. The insurgents declare that by calling the annual convention during the holiday vacation the wom en teachers are forced to cut out holi day social duties, and are brought away from their homes and compelled to do their shopping at Indianapolis instead of spending their money with merchants of their home towns. It is estimated that about four thousand teachers are attending the conven tion. HUNT FORJIURDERER Officers on Trail of Man Who Killed Farmer. AMSTERDAM, N. Y., Dec. 22. A posse with bloodhounds is searching Montgomery county- for- a desperado who killed John Barrett, a wealthy farmer, after murderously attacking Helen Barrett, his daughter. The mur derer set fire to the house to hide his crime. Miss Barrett was sitting before the fire reading a book, the other mem hers of the family having retired, when the door suddenly opened and a man with an iron bar in his hand, burst in to the room. Miss Barrett screamed but before she could move the man had struck her over the head render ing her unconscious. The girl's father, aroused by the scream, ran down stairs but when he reached the bot tom he fell dead with a bullet in his heart. DEFENSE ALLEGES SCHMIDT INSANE NEW YORK, Dec. 22 The battle of alienists began today In the trial of Hans Schmidt, charged with the murder of Anna Aumueller. Each side announced it would call for experts to prove Schmidt's mental condition, the defense claiming he is Insane and the prosecution declaring that he was sane when he killed and dismembered Anna Aumueller, and is still mentally responsible for his actions. In no case since the trial of Harry Thaw have there been so many alien ists called into a criminal trial where the life of a man charged with murder is at stake.- WORK ON VALUATION Officials of the water works com pany say it probably will be after the first of the year before the valuation of the company's property is ready for filing before the public utilities com mission. The company's engineers have been working on the valuation since the inventory was filed early in November. CITY STATISTICS Births. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Collins, 825 North Eleventh street, boy. Deaths and Funerals. WALSH Services for Morris Walsh, who died at Dayton yesterday, will be held 'at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment will be In St. Mary's cemetery. The body will be brought to this city this even ing to the chapel of Jordan, McManus and Hunt. He is survived by two chil dren, Leota and Edward. Marriage Licenses. C. F. DECLARED INSANE Mrs. Ida Miller, 47, 424 North Third street, was Saturday made the subject of a lunacy investigation In Squire Ab bott's court and adjudged insane. She has at different times shown a suici dal mania and it has been necessary to keep a close watch on her at all times. She will be committed to East haven. Poor children and orphans are the mark for many special entertainments at which gifts will be distributed. Uppermost in the minds of the youngsters is the municipal Christ mas tree. One hundred sweater coats in sizes ranging from 2 to 16 are also EARLHAM ELECTS TEAM FOR DEBATE John Cox, Semler and McMinn, who won in the final debate try-outs at Earlham college Saturday evening, will constitute the team that will repre sent Earlham in the coming debate with Albion. Beginning January 13, try-outs for another team to debate in the series will be held. These mat ters will end in January, and the work in the fina lteam begins. OPERA STAR ASKS A THIRD DIVORCE CHICAGO, Dec. 22. Madame Ern estine Schumann-Heinck, the opera singer, today filed suit for divorce from William Rapp, a former Chicago newspaper man. Madame Heinck charges desertion. They were mar ried in "1905. This was the prima donna's third matrimonial venture, and she says it will be her last. INITIATES THREE Initiation of three candidates was given by the Eastern Star lodge Sat urday night. The degree work was followed by by a drill and a social time. One person was burned to death, three others probably fatally injured and a heavy loss was entailed by a fire which swept a fash ionable West End apartment house in Knights Bridge.
