A new outfielder will be signed by the Richmond club today. This player comes to the club with the reputation as a slugger of note, being the main stay of the club with which he has been playing. Claude Applegate, who has been in the left garde"n for the the aggregation the last two Sundays, has fallen away down in hitting. As this is what the club expects of its outfielders, the management did not feel that it could carry him any longer although he is know as a player of ability, and one that will have no trouble in signing with some fast club. He realized that he had not been living up to his reputation, and only last Sunday voluntarily offered to re sign if the management did not think he was going good enough. Applegate is one of the cleanest player who ever wore a Richmond uniform, and the club will hate to loose him for this alone. ' The failure of Chic Long to sign a contract to play regularly was quite a blow to the club, and Harry Patti will get in touch with the manager of the Dennison (Ohio) team tonight and try to get him to allow Long to work regularly for the club. In the 'mean time, Kenney is after a man in Cin cinnati who has quite a "rep," and be lieves that he has a good chance of signing him. For the opening of the I. S. L. the clXib has arranged a feature. It has heard of the great work of the mayor when he delivered the first ball of the opening of the S. A. L., and has ar ranged for him to act in like capacity for the opening game ot the league season. He will also be on the job with another one of his famous speeches. Lefty Fox, who last year worked for the Rush vine club and who was considered a high-class pitcher, was given an aw ful drubbing Sunday by the Hamilton Hoovens, and the Somerville manage ment let him go. Roop worked in the box for the New Paris team when it met the Ohfo team two Sundays ago, and made a big hit with the followers of the team, who clamored for the club to sign him. His first engagement will be against the Vigrans, when they play a return engagement with Somerville Sunday. The Richmond team won the first game after eleven innings. Last Sun day, Roop, pitching for New Paris, held them scoreless, so the game should be every bit as good as the first one. Tim.toR.-br.T (Buy Fuh) INDIANAPOLIS, May 25. "If Joe Dawson attempts to drive in this year's 500-mile race I shall use every influence in my power to bar him from the track," says A. C. Newby, a director of the Indianapolis motor speedway, on which the big race will be held. "Were Joe alone to be taken into consideration I might have no objec tion, but such is not the case. Every one knows the agonies Joe's mother endures every time he starts a con test, and I believe that, after the or deal she was forced to pass through last year, when her boy hovered be tween life and death for weeks, she is entitled to a rest. "All the years that I was in the racing game (Newby had a string of National cars in contests for years) I never permitted a married man to drive for me. I figured no man had a right to gamble with the happiness of one as dear to him as his wife. In Dawson's case, I believe mothers should be included in the list, though, of course, ordinarily every man must be left to settle such matters tor him self." Newby's statement, coming from a man who is financially interested in the racing game, is epoch making. It foreshadows the time when commer cialism will be a secondary feature in every sport, as long as that sport is strong enough to be self-supporting.
