The present Airedale is nearer to an all-round dog than anything else in dog flesh that has ever been bred. For strictly terrier work, vermin killing, he is equal to the best of the other terriers. As a game-bird re triever he nicely fills the place of both the water spaniel and the English curly-coated retriever. That he will, when well trained, hunt for and point quail or other game birds the same as a bird dog has been fully demon strated. Nature has made him a more killing coon and squirrel dog than any hound, because he is shrewder about finding his game, is less noisy, and trees more quickly. Though not able to follow so cold a trail as a beagle, yet as a trailer he is probabl7 superior to any dog outside the hound fam ily. As a rabbit dog, considered in connection with such other small game . as wound naturally fall to the gun when rabbit shooting, he excels the beagle. Much of this superiority lies In the greater energy and intelli gence that the Airedale devotes to hunting for and starting his game a good Airedale will jump three times aa many rabbits in the course of a , day us a beagle. Summing up the qualities of an Airedale as an all-round dog. we see that as a vermin destroyer he is superior to any of the other terriers in that he is equally alert as the others and is also larger and stronger than they are. As a hunting dog be takes the place of a bird dog. a rabbit hound, a 'coon dog and a duck dog, almost equal to any one of them in that dog's specialty. As a stock dog, particularly for the average farm, he well replaces the collie. As a watch dog he excels, especially where brains and dog intelligence are required instead of simple viciousness. As a hunter of big game he has found a virgin field where he baa -no wor thy competitor. If all other breeds of dogs were extinct, it is quite prob able that we could still get along nicely with the Airedale terrier. Walter Q. Kmiolleinilberg PHONE 372::. NATIONAL ROAD EAST. RICHMOND.
