Jan. 20 Indianapolis at Richmond. Muncie Vs. New Castle With at least a four days', lease on the upper berth of the I. S. I, the Richmond polo .team, after its Tic lory over Muncie, last night, is en titled to take a "box seat and watch Muncie. New Castle and Indianapolis scrap it out Among themselves for the next two evenings. It is impossible for any team to dis place the Quakers at the head of the percentage ooloam for at least four -lay. New Castle, xunnertip team, plays its last game of the week to night. Richmond, too, -as but one conflict billed for tt week-end. Monday night Richmond invades New Castle and this game probably will have the I rst real bearing on the league leadership. " . RICHMOND, 6; MUNCIE, 4 According to Sox Quigley. aptain cif the Richmond team and one of the .Ulest heads in the game today, each tram in the I. S. L. to so evenly matched in playing strength and skill that, give any one team a break in I he luck, and that team will win every time. The philosophy of O. Quigley was never better illustrated than last night when the Quakers, with a shade of the luck breaking in the last two periods, no6ed out the Muncie five in one of the closest and most spectacular battles of the pres ent season. . Muncie Gets Early Break. Decided by the system that governs a ten-round ring battle, last night's rame between the Quakers and Magic, City five would have resulted In a rtraw. There was no visible advan ce shown by either side. Muncie, i-;th the breaks favoring, led easily ii the first round, but the Quakers. 1-T.rficlaries of tiie charity stuff in tho '-k. nricds.- managed to roll up ,,.,.h g0aiB to maie u a Richmond , ?t that, the home team was pre ' "'-1 with the game. Far be it to r ' ict. any credit from the showing th scrapping Quakers, who, three -18 to the rear at the close of the f'rst stanza, trotted out a brand of come-back work that surprised even the most optomistlc. Richmond won fairly and squarely and no credit is to be detracted. Dame Fortune Smiled. pame Fortune did more than emil at the Muncie team in the first period. It was almost a chuckle. Aided an abbetted by one Artha Williams. Wayne Farhner, Huston and a big break, the visitors had ruffled the Richmond cage netting three times be fore a Richmond caucus decided that things had progressed far enough and that it was time to inaugurate the return journey. The trip back was started Just seventy-five seconds after start of the second Inning. Lou Quigley. on an aasist from Bob Griffith, caused the tint home-ward spurt. A little later, only fifty seconds to be exact, Lou copped out another spent drive and administering a new brand of the King George stuff, had the satisfac tion of watching Freddie Pence frown at himself. The close of the second, 3 to 2, saw the atmosphere growing more and more ominous for the men of Pence. Storm Period Breaks. As intimated before, the storm broke In the last one. From the first It was evident that Muncie had dropped back on the defense while the Quaker rush ers on the other hand were determined to stage all the-playing in the near vicinity of Freddie Pence and his Muncie goal. The count" resolved itself Into a tie when after a scant half dozen minutes of play, the brothers Quigley put on a brotherly skit entitled "Osk to Lou and goal." If there was any super fluous love between the two teams floating around it departed at this etage of the game. Muncie Stock Advances. Richmond didn't enjoy the fifty-fifty proposition long. A handful of seconds after Lou Quigley had knotted the score along came Huston with a more or less lucky swipe that made the Muncie stock take a Bethlehem Steel boost It" was about this time that Walt Evans, Richmond pivot man, crept in to the foreground with a timely shove of hickory. The goal evened the score at four and speeded up another notch the carnivorous nature of the pnstlralng. With a couple minutes left to go, Lou Quigley broke Muncie just three minuteB after Evans had embarrassed that team with the tying goal. The winning marker was teed from the south bank and was of the angle var iety that links the name of Lou Quig ley with that of Ted Lewis. Two thousand or more Richmond populi paid money for the privilege of watching the Quakers take out an other license on the top rung of the I. S. L. ladder. They were not cheat ed. A marathon bowling contest to de cide the city championship probably will be agreed upon by Arthur King, high average man in the city league, and Hoy Miller, who has the game average with a slightly lower pin total. It is proposed to roll 25 games, a cer tain number each day, and to decide the 'championship on the total pins rolled. Recently Miller defeated King in a five game match in which both bowl ers rolled below form. Their averages in the city league for 30 games are 183 King has 5,497 and Miller 5,479 pins. Both predict they can roll bet ter than 4,700 pins in their mid-season form in the proposed 25-game match. This still would not clear the champ ionship entirely as Bert Martin, one of the premier bowlers of this section of the state, defeated Miller, present championship holder, in an unofficial match and Martin's backers claim he could do it in an. official match. He is said not to be a contender for the city championship. Miller has accepted a challenge from F. G. Cooney which will be rolled off in a few days. Able and Nicodemus in fifty and fifty-three second, respectively, rung up the first ones. Long and Nicodemus found their way into the fouls committed column, Geyer, Able and Nick got credit for assists. Lou Quigley. and Art Williams bad a lively time on the rush line. Lou led, however, seven to five. Despite the closeness of the game, no fouls were called. A few were com mitted, bnt Thompson, hating to slow up the contest, overlooked these. Sox Quigley failed to register but that doesn't say he wesn't in the game. Two of L. Quigley's goals had their origin of Sox's weapon. Fifty rooters, more or less, were in the Muncie delegation that was allow ed to whoop it up for the two periods. As Art Campbell, the Jack Barry of the Muncie delegation, left the arena he remarked something to the effect A sad ending to a day well begun." There wasn't a mint of Muncie money on display. Unlike New Castle, Muncie is strong on diplomacy. Rich mond on the home floor doesn't look like checks-from-father to the Muncie crowd. Muncie plays at New Castle tonight.
