Sunday Unfounded TEXT OF LETTER The text of the letter which was typewritten on the letter head of the Department of Propaganda, of the Imperial Palace of the order, was dated 5-14-22 and read as follows: Dated at Muncie, Indiana. To Billy Sunday, We, the Knights of The Ku Klux Klan desire that you accept this little token of our appreciation of the wonderful work that you and your associates are doing in behalf of perpetuating the tenets of the Christian Religion throughout the Nation, and we wish to inform you that we stand solidly behind the teachings of the Christian Religion, Free Speech, Free Press, Separa tion of Church and State, Liberty, White Supremacy, Just Laws, the Pursuit of Happiness, and mnst of all, the upbuilding of our Institu tions of Public Schools, and the teachings of the Holy Bible, in the Public Schools, and the upholding of Law and Order in every sense, at all times, and we are desirious that the World at large should know our principles. Very sincerely yours, Muncie Klan No. 4 and Richmond Provisional Klan Realm of Indiana, Knights of the KU KLUX KLAN Five thousand men and women sat spellbound in the tabernacle Sunday night while 12 masked members of the Ku Klux Klan. unopposed and fearless ly, interrupted the service long enough to hand the Rev. W. A. Sunday an envelope containing a message of com mendation and 50 in bills. Their mission executed, their ident ity successfully cloaked, the twelve men marched out of the tabernacle, entered automobiles and disappeared as silently and quickly as they had made their entrance. Members of the Sunday party had I ;v a u however, so that some of them were ! prepared for the Klansmen, one of the chief ushers said. While no clue to the identity of the men could be found, a man whose name could not be learned was found in the front of the tabernacle after the meeting, commenting on the smount of publicity which the spectac ular entry would get, and asking how soon the Associated Press -would get the news. Not First Experience This is not the first exnerience of Mr. i Sundav with the Ku Klux Klan. ' i "The klan has made a present to Mr. i Sunrtaw In everv ritv he has been in during the last year," said Bob Mat- i thews, secretary to Mr. Sunday. "Even j the Klan in Sioux City did the same thing." ! At Charleston four members of the;lensea mm as a traua and imposter. Klan appeared, and presented Mr. Sun day a similar communication, with a gift of $200, while at Spartansburg, S. ('.. the Klan presented Mr. Sunday with $600. An attempt of the reporters at the l harleston meeiing to follow the Klan members and find out where they went was toiled, the accounts stating that "there seemed to be an agree ment by which the visit was to be kept secret and attaches of the tabe nacle seemed to be in conspiracy to get the visitors away without their identity being learned." First Appearance It was the first time in the history o" Richmond that the Ku Klux Klan had appeared, although efforts to establish a branch in Richmond several months ago were known to have been made. The letter which they gave to Mr. Sunday bore the signature of the Mun cie Klan No. 4 and Richmond Provi sional Klan. Just as Billy Sunday was beginning his sermon the twelve white clad men,! wearing high pointed head gears draped in robes that came to their feet, with flowing wide sleeves and white masks, weie seen marching si lently down the aisle, single file. Sunday paused in the middle of his anrouncements, and stared down at: them, while a hush fell over the audi ence, as the 12 figures lined up before the platform, and two of them mount ed to the platform. Suppressed giggles and hysterical -nickers broke the stillness faintly, but for the most part the audience was awed into immobility, except on the edges where men and women stood on chair and benches to see what was going on. At a grunt of command, the only Kotind made by the group during the entire visit, and a motion made by the leader, ten men lined up facing Sun day, while the other two, one of them noticeably nervous and ill at ease, walked to the platform and presented the letter containing the money. Make Room The men and women on the stairs parted for the ghost like men. whose identities could not be learned, their costumes revealing only blue eyes and black leather shoes. "I thank you," was all that Mr. Sun ' day said until the visitors had marched out from the tabernacle as silently as they had entered, and had turned south to enter automobiles and drive away. "I don't know how you felt, but 1 commenced to check up on myself, Mr. Sunday confessed after the while f clad men had departed. Sunday said: Paul argued if God were satisfied with the Mosaic law and when they shed its blood if He was satisfied with that for an atonement, for sin; j if the blood of bulls and goats and j the ashes of an heifer sanctified the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who, through ' the eternal spirit, offers Himself with, j out spot to God ! A sinner is an alien; he is in his attitude An alien can claim none of the protection of this government; he is not a citizen. A sinner is not a citizen of heaven; he is an alien, and God will not deal in mercy with that t-innef until he returns through faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ; then he can claim all the protection and friendship of heaven. An alien cannot claim the protection of this government until that man becomes naturalized; then he can stand be tween the stars and stripes for the same protection that is accorded you and nie. So a sinner is an alien and he must come. And so the atonement is the state or quality or the plan perfected whereby a sinner might be made one again- with God. as we have laws whereby an alien can become an American citizen, entitled to our laws and protection. Law Punishes Transgressor - So I have sometimes imagined that when God said, "For Jn the day thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die," the reason, I think, is the fact that they had never seen any one die. They had never seen a man or woman from whom the wreath of life bad gone, therefore I imagine they might have thought it separation. For the Bible says, "Your 'sins have separated be tween you and your God." Let a man violate the laws and the violation of that law separates him from God and he can't return only through Jesus Christ. But no sooner did they find themselves s'nne's and naked, than they made garments of the foliage of the tree with which to hide it, and from that day to this whenever a man finds himself exposed to the wrath of a just and r'g'uteous God he has sought and is seeking through philosophy and culture and education, through science and all her postulates, woven into her frail plans, to justify himself, but God looked down through their fig leaves, through their man made garments; God looks through your philosophy and science and cul ture. How God Forgives Sin God walked out into the fields and slew the beasts. I haven't read it all. won't have timp I've read about everything that was ever written from the in- fidel's standpoint against the doctrine of atonement and I am frank to tell you that I have yet to find the first argument that would ever stand the test of common sense and reason. Read Silly Infidel Book. Why, not long ago I read a silly infidel book by a silly infidel woman, Bible. Then she proceeded to set up her theories and opinions.. Lo, and I behold, when, she finished, if the little fool had sense enough to go into any orthodox church, she would have heard the preacher dilating upon the same basic principles which she had advocated and she thought she found something new in the world to offer to the people. Why, there is many an infidel that is decent tonight, he is moral and virtuous and honesr. in business, but his morality and virtuousness and it Is due to the restraining influence of Christianity. A man can run away with another man's wife and still be a consistent infidel. I say to you, sir, that I find the rule of life that the innocent suffer with, and far more, than the guilty. ( He said. Whoi suffers the most? That drunken, I bloated loafer, sleeping off a drunk or that innocent, broken-hearted mother, praying for her drunken boy? God Not Responsible For Man's Sins You only have to be unfortunate enough to be a mother of a drunk en wretch like that to know who suf fers the most, the guilty or the in nocent. It is the rule of life that the innocent suffer with and far more than the guilty and if you repudiate Jesus Christ because He was innocent and suffering for the guilty, God have mercy on you. Tells of Chicago Incident This inci'ant occured in the Chi cago police court some years ago. A man was arrested on a charge of vag rancy, brought before the magistrate to be sentenced. A letter which he received from his wife was produced as evidence. It said: "Husband, I hope you will not have far to go and long to look until you can get work again. What little money you' have left has been spent for house rent and food. Tom sells a few papers and I do get a little work once in a while, but people don't care to have a woman around with a sick crying baby," and it went on only as a woman could write. Others have to suffer for our wrong doings or rejoice in our righteousness, so I send the man for three months into Bridewell." Who suffers the most, that man or that poor, broken-hearted, discouraged mother in a distnat city with nothing but her frail body between the brood and the poorhouse. You only have to be unfortunate enough to be a mother witn a little brood clinging to your skirts crying for bread with a drunk- en father to know who suffr th most. Innocent Suffer As Result So it is the plan of all plans that seems exemplified every day that the innocent suffer with and far more than the guilty From the fall of man in the Garden o: Eden until now, I see no possible cease from sorrow until the com ng of Jesus Christ. Salvation to any one who rejects Jesus Chris:. ;s impossible. Out of TODAY'S BEST STORY IN BILLY'S SERMON A fellow came home from Yale College out to Denver and he was stricken with a cold. It developed into pneumonia. His father was very rich and they sent for him one day to come home from the bank out in Denver. His father wasn't a professinq Christian but a crack ing good man and he said to his son, "Charlie, is there anything I can do for you?" And he locked up and said to him, "Father, I wish you'd pray for me." And listen! That father turned from that bedside. He walked to a window, he looked out across the Sangre de Cristo Range of the Rocky Mountains. He saw them tossing their old snow-covered head fourteen thousand feet into the air. There you can stand and look from Wyoming clear down into New Mexico, two hundred and sixty-five miles right down along the mountain peaks. And he walked across to the win dow and looked out to that. He bit his lip until his teeth cut through his lower lip; he clenched his fists until his nails' cut through the palms of his hands. Four days later when a friend of mine who preached the funeral ser. mon was coming home with him, he said to my friend, "I'd give a'l my bank stock, I'd give all my stock in the . Denver and Rio Grande, I'd give all I've got if I could, just call . Charlie back and fulfill his request and pray for him." He was under just as much obli gation to be able to pray as he was to pay his tuition through Yale, as he was to pay the funeral expenses, as he was to dig the grave and pay the doctor who attended. You can't get out of it! Christ there is no mercy and there could be none and if there were mercy out of Christ, then Jesus Christ died in vain on the cross. If salvation could have been attained otherwise than by the death of Jesus then all He went through was useless. If I could save myself by nry culture and morality and my philanthropy, Jesus Christ needn't to have come into the world to die. It was perfectly need less, if I can save myself and if sal vation is to be gotten by some other way than through the faith of Jesus Christ; it was useless for him to come and suffer. There is no salva tion in any other way. According to the Bible, men are saved because they accept Jesus Christ and men are lost not because they are worse than others but be cause they reject Jesus Christ. And our sins, to be forgiven, must be con veyed somewhere and God laid on Jesus Christ our iniquity, so I accept the one who bears my guilt and that lets me escape. And if the world would be firmly convinced that Jesus Christ is the Son of God then accept Him, sin would instantly cease. No man would stagger home drunk, no body would lie and defame another's character, and I come tonight to pre sent to you the only power that can set you free from the sins which hold you an unwilling prisoner, chained to your evil habits and I can't imagine the possibility of anybody with or dinary intelligence entertaining the least doubt about Jesus Christ being the Son of God. Convinced of His Belief And if I were the only man in the 'world who believed in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, that belief would be all the evidence that I needed for myself it wouldn't make any differ ence what you believed. So over whelmingly is the evidence on the side of Christ that it is . impossible for anybody to deny that Jesus is the Christ, without committing intel lectual and moral suicide. I know a world that is sunk in shame, Of hearts that are sick and tired; I know of a name, a name, a name That can set the world on fire. And thai can cleanse every sinner ; and make every drunkard sober and I every thief to steal no more and I ) l am presenting to you that name to j night: Jesus Christ, the Son of God. According to the Bible men are saved because they accept Jesus Christ and men are lost, not because they are worse than others, but be cause they reject Jesus Christ. That's why a lot of preachers are failures, they are preaching a lot of tommy-rot, poppy-cock, nonsense and they've got an improvement over the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. You can argue against the Bible, but you can t argue against sin. Sin is in the world and all the damnation and misery come from sin. You can take this black humanity, cursed and damned, by sin, faith in Jesus Christ will make it white as snow. So the only power to cleanse Is through Jesus Christ. You try to climb to heaven by your deeds and morality; you try to climb up by any other way, God pity you. There is no other way you can ever do it, than by faith in Jesus. Dancing ig of ill repute. Nobody dying sends for a dancing master. We will send for the preacher, we will send for the priest. The minute they stop playing cards for prizes and money you will kill the card business. Don't you ever lift yourself against God and his kingdom. Everywhere? you go you will find some people who are bad. There are constant blessings which the individual may have if he will do what God wants him to do. God has a single standard for men and women, for pulpit and pew, and he has the same air to breathe for the rich and the poor. America doesn't need conservation of her natural resources so much. America need3 a tidal wave of sal vation, a cyclone of religion to sweep over her land. much as I blame a lot of mutts who call themselves preachers. Now, it stands for redemption. We are not redeemed with corruptible things such as silver and gold, but by the precious blood of Christ. You are not redeemed by your culture, your philanthropy, your education. We are redeemed by the blood of Christ. You Must Accept Christ Now, listen! Redemption is more than salvation. When Jesus died on the cross he redeemed mankind, the price was paid for everybody, but . everybody won't be saved. And the .'doctrine of universal salvation In an infernal lie. It crawled out of the pit of hell. While everybody has been redeemed, everybody won't be saved, but redemption will avail you nothing if you refuse and reject Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ died for every saloon keeper and every thug and every mur derer and prostitute. He died for all and redeemed all. but all will not be saved for all will not accept the re demption. They will go to hell. So, redemption is more than sal vation. While redemption was for everybody, salvation is only for those who will accept redemption. So sal vation is not universal. It will be if everybody will accept redemption. They all can be saved if they will. The vilest sinner has been redeemed. Redeem means buy back, and so we have been bought back. Christ Made Possible Salvation. Now. then, if you had something that belonged to me and I could prove that Jesus Christ redeemed us when what Jesus Christ paid for in His own blood. One day in Chicago when I quit play ing baseball and was in the Y. M. C. A., I was going west on Madison street and out in front of a Japanese grocery store, between Dearborn and Clark, I met a company of newsboys and one t of them had something in his hand and I walked up and peeked in and saw a fledgling of a sparrow. VAST CROWDPRESEHT For over an hour and a half Satur day night, Billy Sunday at the taber nacle alternated humor, vaudeville, and hot shots at the amusements of the modern world. "People need amusement, I am not against that," he declared, "But I am against the rottenness In amusements that degrade." Theatres, dancing, and cards all came for their share of denunciation, and the list might have been extended had not Mr. Sunday suddenly declared "I've preached for over an hour and a hair, and I'm tired. Good Night." Had Audience Guessing. The end of the sermon came so sud denly that the audience did not stir, and Mr. Sunday was forced to turn and tell them that is was all over be fore they would leave. Their departure was stayed again when Sunday finding the chorus sing ing one of his favorite songs, led them in his "cheer leader" fashion. Before the sermon, Mr. Shaffer, Cin cinnati cartoonist, provoked his aud ience into gales of laughter with his picture of "Old Man Gump" saying "If the Reds had Sunday on their team they might get somewhere," one of Rodeheaver scrubbing the floor, which was entitled "Brighten the Cor ner Where You Are," while a third de picted Billy's fist Knocking the "H" out of Richmond. Chorus Sings. The delegation from the Cincinnati Billy Sunday Chorus sang one song for their Introduction, while about 20 per sons from Saratoga. Ind., stood up as representing that place. Local public school teachers occu pied front seats. In the midst of the sermon, the Cin cinnati delegation had to leave in ord er to catch a train and Mr. Sunday who had been already preaching for an hour, welcomed the occasion to take a drink from the thermo3 bottle that he keeps under the pulpit. This time, however, it had to be handed to him by Fred Rapp fronr the rear. "Good By Cincy," Billy called after them. "Good By, Billy." they answered while just as the last of the group were filing from the door a little youngster shrilled back, "Goo By, Bill." Illustrates Dance. Sunday's vaudeville during his ser mon took the house by storm. Describ ing the modern dances, Mr. Sunday wiggled across the stage doing what he called the "Shimmy-Shiver," throwing his audience into a spasm of laughter. At another time he capered about the floor in imitation of a square dance, "swing his gal," and "hot footing" around in great circles. His best imitation, however, was of a lady getting ready for a dance. Lean ing over, Sunday imitated combing long hair; he brushed and combed, and then reaching to the pulpit, took down an imaginary switch, brushed It out, coiled it about his head, and then straightening up, made as though powdering his nose, and penciling his eyebrows. Audience Roars. The culminating move was to wiggle himself into a tight fitting gown of the same elusive qualities as the switch, while the audience roared and rocked in laughter. During his sermon on the dance, Sunday turned his atention to Rich mond. "I'd like to know who has the authority to put tht dance in the school." Sunday demanded. "I tell the Richmond school board that they haven't any right to do any thing like that. If you want to do that you had better resign, and let some one else be elected." The deafening applause of the aud ience drowned out his words, and though he tried to continue the aud ience would not cease its demonstra tion. For over a minute they kept it up, before they would permit Sunday to continue his denunciation of the dance. did you let the bird go for; why didn't you chuck him in the sewer?" I said: "Boys, the devil has you in his hands like you boys had that bird and I came along and gave you the nickel. Then the bird was mine so I could do whatever ! pleased with it and I wanted to let it go and I did." I said: "Jesus came into the world and died on the cross and He paid the price for our souls, so we all belong to Him. When you got my nickel the bird was mine. Now I have bought it back." Redemption means to buy . back. Jesus oaid the price. Don't be a fool. j give Him what belongs to' him.
