About two years afo an immigration commission was appointed by congress with a view to placing the subject of immigration before congress nj public official generall, in a comprehensive form, so that the question of immigration might be intelligently handled when legis lation is desired in that direction. This commission consists of Senator William V. IM'linghsm of Vermont. hairman of the senate committee on immigration; in addition two senators, three representatives, commissioner of labon. Charles r. Neiil. and William Wheeler of California. This com mission employs about. 1S5 clerks and field men. the la iter being distributed through the Atlantic end sov.th.ern states and the middlewest. -A part of this force, which has been operating- in Chicago lately, visited Whiting, and has collected voluminous statistics at the Standard Oil company plant here.
