American Red Croea. has. for eight
years, been building up what is now
the largest organization of tralr.ed

about 8.000 nurses for ml Jtary duty
for the United States Army and Navy
Nurso Corps and the United States
Public Health Service, of which It

cruits from every State In the Union.
Miss Delano's professional prepar
ation for her present service Is a
fascinating story. In 18SS when the
terrible scourge of yellow fever broke
out in Jacksonville. Florida, and so
deadly was the epidemic that human
beings seemed helpless sealnet It.
Miss Delano, then a young graduate
nurse, appeared In Jacksonville with
several trained nurses In her little
company.
The Infection of yellow fever
through mosquitoes was not then
known, but Miss Delano Insisted on
screening the windows of the hos
pital and neither she ..or her nurses
contracted the diseaae. Thev staved
until the fight against yellow fever
was won.
Later, after having held the posi
tions of superintendent of the Train
ing Schools for Nurses at Eellevuo
Hospital. New York, and the hospi
tal of the University of Pennsylvania
at Philadelphia, Miss Delano retired
1 from active duty .ind wert to Europe
wun irsenas. expecting to make her
residence fher for some years. In
a few weeks, however. sh received
an official message asking her to
return to take charge of the United
States Army N'urae Corps and to or
ganize the Nursing Service of the
American P.ed Cross.
It was Miss DeIno's unquestion
ing compliance with this patriot!
call which led so definitely to her
great accomplishment at the end of
eight years of arduous service, given
without compensation and with ex
traordinary devotion.
The Red Cross Nursing Service
not only provides trained nurses for
ml 'tary duty and public health dutv
under the government, but has a
large corps of women ensaeed in the
Red Cross Town and Country Nurs
ing Service, and large numbers of
women ava11ah! for rervice in time
of public disasters.

day was held Monday afternoon at the
