I0W MONEY SAYS GARYJEWSPAPER Steel Machine Organ Raps Proposal That Taxpayers Aid the Government by Repairing Road With the County's Fund. The Gary Tribune, one of the organs of the steel political machine organ at 'try. opposes r.r.d unsuccessfully the r"rir at county expense of Lincoln highway in Lake county, saying that the federal govcniment has plenty of -coney to wast?. Whether an editorial labe'ed "This is rot Prussia" is inspired by interests tliBt do not wish to join in with other willing taxpayers, only too glad to aid the government by -repairing a highway which will be used for the transport or' war supplies, is not indicated. Steel Paper Ignored. When the state engineer appealed to the county council that (500,000 be ussd to repair the road, a sum the council oted. Tribune editorials were circulat ed at the meeting, but wore laughted at Last night the Tribune printed this edi torial : "THIS IS ITOT PRUSSIA. "Lake county has clone more than Its share in all war work. It has oTer-snbacribed In every campaign. Are we to he repaid now by being ordered to expend $300,000 upon a, country road, which is of the sllght eat practical value to the taxpayer of the county, in that motor trucks may run across the county f "This ia America., not Prussia. Lake county has its own govern ment, free to do a Its officials may decide in the matter of issuing' Its own bonds. "When the State of Indiana or the Pederal government undertakes to order X,ake county to expend large sums, then home rule in Indiana counties is over. "If the improvement of Lincoln highway in Lake county Is so Im portant to the Federal government, let It spend Its own money. It has plenty to waate (see revelations in aircraft scandal)." County councilmen and the bulk of the taxpayers feel that they are only too glad to have the opportunity to aid the government by assuming a burden that .is negligible considering that very few roads will ba built this year and that road expense will only be a faction of what it was in other years. Oberlin, president of the Hammond Hed Cross, has received the following: letter from A. R. Lacey of Co. C, 41st Kngineera now in France. France, April T. ISIS. Dr. Tom Oberlin, President Hammond Red Cross. Dear Doctor: It certainly does pay to have a stand-in with the local president I found out today never knew I had. but after receiv-inc my share of the mail It rather looks as though 'his be true unless some one made a mistake. Alt the way from Hammond came a collection of boxes, sweaters. soap, tooth brushes and the like such as I have never seen equalled. Ask m if they looked good ask me! The smok ing was bully as was everything, so please tell all the folks who were, kind enough to spend their time and take the trouble in sending me the package It was greatly appreciated. Overs here where it rains once in a while and then rnins some more, one can nex-er have enough, sweaters, wool socks and the like the clothes line is always full of wet duds dry'nir. As for the kit bag and contents well a kit bag Is the most handy thing around a tent you can imagine, and naturally have always wanted one so now I'm happy and even look forward with expecta tions to tho next time I have a repair Job on hand. If I keep up. you will think I'm kid ding some one. I'm not. Never In my life did I recede such a bunch of use ful gifts everything sent I can us and have used, although I have been the proud owner these three short hours. I tell you doctor, if it wasn't for the R.-i Cross and "T" this old war game, even as we engineers play it. would be something like what Gen eral Shrman said It was. There Isn't a man In the army today who isn't for them strong. The work they are doing Is truely wonderful, and the way they do it is what after all said and done;, counts. The French and even the English have not these branches organized as we have, or- rather as you have. They seem to ge no where with all their efforts. So. Doctor, all you have to do Is te try and express my thanks to the Hammond Red Cross that another pack age landed safe and was given a gnod home. I thank you. as O. B. S. was wont to say. A. B. LACEY.
