Editor Times: I am sending you a type written let ter which I have forwarded to Mr. TV. G. MfAflno. I am a subscriber to the Lake County Times and am seeking better transportation In this r-jrion. X wish you would publish the letter in your paper. In fact, I think the pub lic ought to be interested enough in the letter to eni similar letters to Mr. McAdoo and If that does not bring re sults, you should take up a petition and ask every strip hanger and th public to sign it. M'e have tried everv peaceable m-ans with the street car company, but we still have the game service, which is a car every once in a while. STRAP HANGER September 7. 191S. Mr. W. G. McAdoo, Director Geneal of Railroads, Bureau of Suggestions and Complaints, Washington. D. C. Am sending ycu a letter of sugges tion and complaint. The complain relates to transportation facilities In the Chicago end calumet region. The Hammond. Whiting and East Chicago street railway is unable to handle the increased volume of business owing to single track and lack of equipment. A large part of their ecfuipment now in use Is badly In need of repairs und break downs result. The TT. P. Army Ordnance Department THORNTON FIELD Beside the six wells cf the Southwest Oil Coiurany that are all producers, the Futnarn Oil and Refining Co., encounter ed the oil Builds a. few days ago and also It Is under-stood, tr.at the Upton Oil and G01 Company have witnessed the same encouragement. The Putnam Co., will make arrangements to shoot their well within a short time and much activity Is expected to develcpe In the Uptoo Thornton field this fall. Many Companies which have holdings In the field have been waiting results Ojf the few companies that are now operat ing will make arrangements to start de velopment. The field Is now a proven field and It la only a matter of a short time until rigs and derricks will be seen all ever the field and the Upton-Thornton field will be one of the most active fields In the state for the fact that he sands are now struck at a depth of from 600 to 750 fet and a single crew can average a well every ten days. Other companies that are making pr rar.pemen'9 to stavt drilling are: The North Cei.lral Oil Co., The Mackwell Oil and Refining Co., The Wyoming High Gravity Oil Co., Th Wyoming-Dakota and otherj. The fact that the east well cf the Southwest Co., and the Putnam striok !ng the sand fit a shallow depth, the field will get better as they get on lower ground. The Southwest have the frame work rompleted for their refinery and have some of their machinery on the, ground and the balance Is expected to arrive at any time- and the refinery will b operat ing within the next ten days. Thi Com pany are taking the necessary steps to secure a side track which will he but a few hundred fet from their refinery, which will be very useful to them and other companies operating in the field. From The Upton i"ews Letter. It is worth while noting the fact that the first six wells of the Southwest Oil Company in the Thornton field are ALL producers. It is worth while noting, also, that the field has made good to the extent - that A REFINERY IS NOW BEING CONSTRUCTED. Did you note that a single crew can average A WELL EVERY TEN DAYS? With two shifts it means quick results. Our property is in this field. Our property is lo cated right. Bear in mind that it is a Hammond Company, managed by Hammond men and they have put their own money into the enterprise. The trustees recommend this investment. ; These men are: JOS. W. WEIS CALEB K. WHITE DR. J. T.. CLARK DR. G. D. HELGREN S. E. DAVIS YOU KNOW EVERY ONE OF THEM. You know that your money will be handled economically and carefully. ' Send in your checks today to the office of the company payable to the order of JOS. W. WEIS, TREASURER. The shares TODAY are fifty cents each fully paid and non-assessable but they are limited in number and you should act promptly. Hammond people are backing these Hammond men in this enter prise or they know they will be treated on the square. Wtlyomtng-Thomton Oil Company 302 HAMMOND BLDG., HAMMOND, IND. Telephone Hammond 2217. Open eves., 7-9 p. m. Sunday, 10-12 a. m. 2-5 p. m. has bought and Is operating about 40 auto busses' In and around Hammond to take care of their employes. The Sinclair Refining Company, of East Chicago has a special train on the Pennsylvania railroad for their employ es while the rest of us have to look out for ourselves. Now In 1915 and for several years prior, we enjoyed very Rood transportation all through the p'i;!nn. We had a suburban ser vice furnished by the N. Y. C. Lines and trams known a' Lake Shore loop trains. The fares on these trains were reas onable until 1 ft 1 6. when fares were ad vanced from 2.1c to fOc per ride. The resuH was that patrons could not af ford to par this raise and began rid ing the street enrr, and the loop train were finally taken off on account of liok o.f patronage. Since that time truvcl on :tiect oars has about doubled but the street car company has not Increased its facilities and passenger standing on roincrj waiting for cars only to see cars erovvb-.l nd no rom for any mre is a common siRht. We have a single track street car line in Hammond. Whiting. Kat Chicago and Indium Harbor. Now 1 would suggest that those Lake Shore loop trains be put hack in service together with sub urban fares (by this latter) I mean a fare from Chicago to any point in the Caluriet region and visa versa. The Sinclair Refining Co. employes are chnrEcd something like 9c per rid and I cannot see where their employ e ehould receive any better cr cheaper transportation than Government em ployes of whom thera are thousand's In this region and the public large. In the first place those trains are need ed as a win the war measure, as they 1 av station stops at most all Import ant war material plants Including the Standard Steel Car and Ordnanco Dept.. at Hammond, which would mean a sav ing In men and money. It would re leaso about 40 auto buss drivers for other work, to say nothing of the wages paid drivers and the upkeep of those cars. Seond, those trains aro a paying proposition. If every passen ger paid fare (no transportation hon ored on those trains) and. third, they nTr badly needed In the interest of humanity, as passengers are packed in those street cars tighter than ear j dines were ever packed In a can I could give several good reasons why these trains should bo put back In service, but I think those three reas ons are sufficient. Yours very rspectfully, B. & O. C. T.
