FOR FREE TRADE
Workers Told to Pro
tect Selves by Vote
for G. 0. P.
CHICAGO. Oct. Z6. Representa
tives of various labor organizations
met yesterday concerning the attitude
of union labor in the coming election.
As a result of the conference they
authorized and prepared a statement
declaring that labor must protect its
self and prepare for the settlement of
the problems which will follow when
readjustments are made at the end
of the war.
stAti;mi:.t is issued.
At the conference the following
pronouncement was unanimously in
dorsed and signed by members of the
committee delegated for that purpose:
"American labor has fought this
war both in the trenches and in the
workshop. It has given its sons to
the army and it has worked night
and day at home. It has done its
share cheerfully, giving its blood, its
time and its money wherever called
upon.
"The war is coming to an end per
haps sooner than we think. American
labor must protect itself in the final
settlement and see that its interests
are not sacrificed in the readjustments
that will follow he end of the war.
I 'REE TllADE MENACE.
"The Republican party stands for
a protective tariff and the Ameriacn
scale of wages and living. The Demo
cratic party is the party of free trade
and competition with European
wages and living standards. If free
trade comes as a part of the peace
treaty it cannot be replaced after its
effect is realized. The Democratic
plan must tie beaten now and free
trade kept out of the peace treaty.
American labor can do this only by
defeating the Democratic party.
"Opportunity is knocking at your
door. I.abor has always received just
recognition from the Republican
party. Do you realize that the value
of your dollar under Democratic rule,
when measured by what it will buy.
is only 4 7 cents? I.et us get back to
Republican administration and a 100
ctnt dollar.
DANG Eli OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
"By electing the entire Republican
ticket we will be guaranteed against
the conditions that obtained for more
than a year prior to the entry of the
nation into the war, when thousands
upon thousands of fellow workers
were tramping the streets seeking an
opportunity to work. Those dark days
of 1914 were the result of tariff tin
kering by the Democrats, and now
they propose free trade to tempt Ger
many into peace.
"Vote for that policy and that
party which has always made it pos
sible for workingmen to provide food,
clothing and comforts for their family
and still have left in their pockets a
few dollars to jingle that are worth
100 cents each.
"If each voter does his bit in a
thoughtful way. he can make the
world safe for us all without sacrific
ing his own scale of wages and living
by giving free trade as a basis for
rcace.
VOTE "WHOLE TICKET.
"Tour vote for the whole Repub
lican ticket will show a. determina
tion to end this war and force a peace
which shall secure to yourself and
those dependent upon you the con
tinued opportunity which a protective
tariff has always given to American
labor.
"Think over this new Democratic
plan for fastening free trade upon
the workingmen of America and then
kill it by voting the straight Repub
lican ticket- That is the answer that
will count"

Thanks to the loyal support which the Re
publican Senators and Congressmen gave to the war meas
ures of the United States Government at critical moments
when the Democrats refused to vote for the legislation recommended and
requested by the president, the war is being fought to a glorious and victorious finish
by our soldiers and their allies. The dawn of peace is visible,
With peace will come great problems to be solved. We
foolishly neglected to prepare for war, but we have
learned our costly lesson, and we must immediately
begin to prepare for peace. The millions of our gal
lant soldiers and sailors who abandoned their usual
avocations and sprang to the support of our govern
ment, willing and anxious to make even the supreme
sacrifice if necessary, must be taken care of and ample
provision must be made to gradually and thoroughly
return them to the paths of peaceful pursuits. No one
of them must be permitted to experience anything but
our highest consideration and gratitude. Above all,
they must be provided with employment just as soon
as they desire positions.
We believe that the party of Lincoln, McKinley and
Roosevelt is infinitely better qualified by experience
and tradition to undertake and accomplish successfully
those great reconstruction tasks than is the Democratic
party. The great leaders of the Republican party in
Congress and in civil life w ith Ex-Presidents Roosevelt
and Taft at their head have all been in favor of fighting
, the war to the only end that is safe for the world un
conditional surrender. We do not want our country
ruined commercially by chaining its policies to a free
trade treaty of peace. We people of the industrial com
munities know that free trade means starvation wages
and ruinous competition.
A vote for the straight Republican ticket will assist in
selecting men of ability and experience who are com
petent to solve the great issues of the war in the best
manner for our country.
Only twice since the Civil War has the Democratic
party been in entire control of the affairs of govern
ment, and on both occasions during times of peace
they have had to issue bonds to meet the running ex
penses of the government. The present Democratic
administration was elected by a minority vote of the
people the first term by a split in the Republican party
and the second term by the false pretense that they had
'kept us out of war."
The Republicans of the nation both in and out of Con
gress desired to heartily and loyally co-operate with
and support the President in the prosecution of the
war, and they have done so, but he invites the rebuke
of the nation by stepping down from his high position
and assuming the attitude of the professional partisan
politician and urging free-born American citizens to
vote for men of his particular political stripe. He made
the same frantic appeal in Wisconsin and in Maine,
and the free men of those states resented his unwar
ranted interference in their domestic affairs by return
ing large Republican majorities.
Every Republican should be proud of his party's record
in this great war. Every Republican must realize the
necessity of electing a Republican Congress to study
and solve the great problems arising from this war.
We all know from our past experience that our country
is always prosperous under a protective tariff and that
we must have a Republican Congress to protect the
industries of our country and to prevent the starvation
wages to our wrorkingmen that invariably accompanies
Democratic free trade.
The Republican Candidates for County and Township
offices are all able, clean citizens and we invite
comparison of their records with those
of their opponents.
