States met her today to consider
tha details ot th. trovermnent's new
road building program, a progTarn
which contemplates the expenditure
of approximately $3,000,000 and the
construction of 1SO,000 miles of high
way over a pexlod of twenty years.
These 180,000 miles of Improved
highways will constitute the federal
aid highway system and will be con
nected with an equal or gTeater mil
eage of state or local roads. When
the great Job Is done, according to
officials of the United States depart
ment of agriculture, the transporta
tion facilities of the country will
far exceed those of any other na
tion, past or present. In the world.
The highways of the ancient Bo
mans, whose fame has come down
through the centuries, will paJe by
comparison.
In a letter to the opening session
of the conference today, President
Harding termed the problem one of
the most "pressing and difficult that
the entire world la facing at present."
"The whole program of transpor
tation. In all its phases It must be
regarded as that of a single problem
presenting a great many aspects.
Is among the most pressing and dlf
Cced that the entire world Is facing
at present," the president wrote. "As
you and your associates are prob
ably much better aware than most
other people, the transport facilities
of the whole world, whether by rail
or by water, or whether represented
by the greatnetwork of public high
ways, have been confronted with a
most difficult situation for a num
ber of years. It Is on which demands
the very best and wisest treatment
from the standpoint of both the tech
nical and economic and financial au
thorities. "Wo are all agreed that the ooun-
tnr needs good roads and more of
them, but we also have been brought
to realize that they are not to be
had without very great expense.-
