The Mayor appointed the following standing committees for the present year: U 'a yt and Mean. Hutton , Starr and B urk. Claims. Dennis, Roberts and Smith. Streets. Lynde, Mendenhall and Roberts. Public Buildings and Markets. Burk, Smith and Dennis. Firs Companies. Mendenhall, Lynde and Hutton. The following resolution was introduced by Mr. Lynde, and adopted: "Eesolvtd, That in view of the present in debtedness of the city, and the improvements up on the streets, already contracted for, to be paid out of the revenue of the current year, that we be cautious about making new appropriations of the public money, and actuated by no sectional, party or prxvite interests, have an eye single to the best interests of the city." . A resolution, ffgnating the kind of property to be taxed for the current year, was offered by Mr. Hutton and adopted. The annual elec tion of Directors of the Indiana Central Rail way, was held in Indianapolis, on Monday last. The following persons were elected: Samuel Hannah, Charles Parry, John T. White, Wil liams Petty, Darid Commons, Jos. W. Jackson, John S. Newman and W. S. T. Morton. The Board met the same evening, and re elected John S. Bank of Covington. The Friend, published at Covington, in speaking of this Bank says: Closed for thk Prksekt. The Bank of Covington, located at this place, has suspended business; on account of the prssure of the times, and the depreciated rates of stocks, the Bank has been driven into liquidation. Their money will be worth at least 80 cents on the dollar. Depositors will receive 80 or 85 cents n the dollar on deposits. Mr. Preston, the Presi dent, is here aud seems disposed to do all in his power to secure all interested. JEa7The last Jeff, expresses its dislike to the petitions now being circulated in this vicinity for the "Maine Law," and thinks that those who are circulating them are certainly "spending time Yery foolishly." Ho one is at all surprised at the Jeff.'s course, and its efforts in support of "free whisky" are certainly proof positive of time fool ishly spent.
