Masonic Lodges in the East. A Masonic Lodge Is in contemplation at Bagdad, in Mesopotamia, the supposed primi tive abode of man, where there is already qnile a number of Freemasons, among whom are some Persian Mussulmans. The Chief Minister of the Shah of Persia, the Com mander-in-chief of his army, and many other of his highest functionaries belong, to the Order. It is believed that lodge will soon be founded at Teheran, the capital of Persia jf, indeed, one docs not already exist there, under the Grand Orient of France. Another lodge, (English) is about to be founded in Jerusalem, the .ancient city of Kings David and Solomon. The Consul of the United States o! America has taken the initiative in its formation. Besides a goodly number of resident brethren there, Jerusalem to annually visited by travelers of all faiths and nationalities, are Freemasons thus the great Order of Universal Brotherhood, after . making the circuit of the entire world, returns to the scene of its primitive creation, and the Temple of Solomon will once more shed light upon tho fix tsteps of Freemssomy. The Jerusalem Lodge' is to coutain as much of the ancient fragments of the 'Lodge ol Solo mon as can be collected together. The cedars of Mount Lebanon will furnish working tools; Joppa and Baalbek will lend their aid in the I reconstruction of the edifice ; ana uiram, King of Tyre, live in the memories of those who humbly imitate bis faithful career in life, as well as in bis faith. Notwithstanding the misconceptions exist ing among many Mussulmans of Turkey, re garding the principles of Freemasonry, it gradually recommends itself to their better opinion. It tends very much to disposses them of their great animosity against men of ail other religious bodies than their own. It to to this hostility that may be attributed the slow progress msde amongst Mussulmans in mental culture and improvement, even in the arts and sciences or other peoples and coun tries. Everything, therefore which tends to dispel it, must be a great advantage to them ; and it to only when it has been removed, and religions hostility Tades away before the genial light and warmth of one Universal Brother bood, that there will exist not only harmony between the Moslem and men of all other faiths, but a sincere sympathy among them London Freemason. , :v A Masonic Joke. Kveawincc the days of Morgan, every good mason has felt it incumbent upon him to. guard the interests ot the Order, and to bring np with a round turn anybody found recreant enough to betray them. Nearly a year ago, a good-natured fellow in the journalistic world of New York took it into his head to write a burlesque expose of Freemasonry. The pamphlet was fittingly illustrated by Thoa. Worth, and has enjoyed an almost unprece dented sale, mostly confined, however, to rail roads. Well, to make the joke even greater, the publishers advertised it as a genuine ex pose, and for a time it created considerable aommeut m this city, which soon gave way to a series of broad grins, however, when the book came to be read. But it seems that some of the country lodges took the expose greatly to heart, and after chiding the indif ference of the city lodges, they at length re solved on taking action ia the matter, for the purpose of stopping the salo and publication of the book. Especially was their hot indig nation manifested at Troy and Cohoes. Oue night last week, it is said, King- Solomon Lodge, of Troy, and Cohoes Lodge, of Cohoes held special meetings and took action in the matter. They voted to spend five hundred dollars each towards suppressing the publica tion, and invested Worshipful Master J. C. Fiizpatrtek, of Cohoes Lodge, with full powers and started him for New York. Burning with indignation, he sought out the .publication office whence those startling advertisements, were issued regarding a book which he natur ally abhorred, but which be had never seen, ' and demanded to see the author end publish ers, la a few words be explained bis busi- mnmm. A cpy of Ihe book was planed ia his . hands snd be ten w tnT ft few moments to, parson it. He studied it aftenmta-j- nra while, and then, ascertaining that thiswa. really the much dreaded expose, be got out o ' tho nest he had blundered into, by joining in the laugh, and taking the author and publish era ever to the Astor House and ordering a : goodiAoer.. But what putties, him, most is to know how he shall frame his tePi,t as avoid paying for a still .largePKaner; when, be gets back to CoboecNew York Dispatch' -'v'r- , " ' - it bricklayer were called fcrick, be need not feel mortar fled. JF. The Testimony of Egypt. There is no lei d in which the enemies of the Bible have been more fond of expatiating or from which they have drawn more ol their arguments, than the absolutely unknown. While Egypt was a mystery and its record a sealed book, they drew from it objections to the Mosaic history and to Bible, chonology generally, making the boast that Egyptian dates extend thousands of years baci, and thus disprove the Bible. But it is now prov ed incontestibly that 'there is not in all the .remains of that ancient land a monument as old as the time of the flood,' nor ft record of any event that occurred before that period. ' , The question . of the use of the Bible in the schools having awakened a general, dis cussion in England, the new scientific period ical. Nature, referring among other things to the opinion 'that man is but some 8,000 yean old,' as founded on the statements of Scrip ture, says it is most deplorable to think that such doctrines should be taught in the schools. To which the Bev. B. W. Savile, of Feign mouth, replies with great pertinence andorce; "As regards the antiquity of man, no scientific proof has ever been sdduced of man s existence on earth much more than 4,000 years ago. All evidence of the antediluvian world is dependent upon the statement of Scripture alone. What Cham poll ion wrote in his work on Egypt 'They will find in this work an absolute reply to their calumnies, since I tare demonstrated that no Egyptian monument is really older than the year B. C. 2,200' is true in the main, tbongh recent discoveries may throw back the oldest monu ment of that country one or two centuries earlier. The only really scientific attempt to prove man's antiquity greater than what the Scripture allows was made by the late Mr. Horner, when manufactured articles were dis covered at a certain depth in the alluvial de posits of the Nile. Estimating the sinkage at the rate ol 3 inches per century, the late Bsron Bunsen hastily declared that it was sufficient proof of man's existence on the earth at least as eaily as 13,009 B.C. But when Sir Gardiner Wilkinson detected th( ngure ol the urecian noney-suckle upon these very ancient pieces cf pottery, which limited their date to some period later than the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great or three centuries B. C, it was seen that Bunsen's anti-scriptural theory was at once blown to the winds. And if any further proof was needed of the untenableness of such theory, it is seen in the fact that the late Sir Robert Stephenson, when engineering in Egypt, discovered in the mud of the Kile, at a greater depth than was ever reached by Mr. Darner's diggings, a brick bearing upon it the stamp of Mahommed Ali! ' 'So much for the attempt to prove man's existence on earth earlier than is stated in the unefFing word or God.' San Francisco Mir ror. . Masonry in Spain. Masonry ia steadily progressing in Spain. There are four Masonic bodies, namely, the Supreme Council of the Grand Orient of Spain, a Grand Chapter of Royal Arch, one of Rose Croix, a Grand Lodge of the Symbol ical degrees, with seventy-two regular lodges, scattered ' over all Spain ; and many com mittees are in several places of the country for the purpose of forming new lodges. The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge is Brother Manuel DeLorilla, the eminent Spanish states man. Boston Freemason's Monthly. The following is an extract from of Forney's letters to his paper, ono the Press, written from New Orleans : A little incident occurred this morning After I had just arisen to take another and early view of the panorama of the Mtssiss'ppi, a colored man passed door of my 6tateroom. I asked him bring me a pitcher of ice water, quietly replied "Your mistake is tural, but I am not connected with the to He na the boat. I am a delegate to the Republican State Convention ; but I will gladly do your errand." I made a prompt apolo- ev. and then introduced mvir. ., upon wtneb, with many expression of kind ness, he left me and soon returned with the ice-water and a number of his colleagues. Here I had another evidence of the aptitude and good sense of the manumitted race We talked over the past, not the less agreeable because two of them knew of Philadelphia and one of them had just come on from the Na tional Convention ; and we talked over the present, and if I had had any doubts e . . viuuuia Louisiana, they passed away before the clear and candid explanations of these men. "Why, sir," said one, "although there are a few colored people in New Orleans that may follow bad advieerst there is not one in the parishes that will not vote for Grant and Wilson. In every house owned or rented or occupied ty a colored man you will find three likenesses Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Oscar Dunn, the late de. ceased Lieut-Governor of the Stale If the whole Democratic party and all the men with Governor War mouth go to gether and rally their forces, we can still give from 15,000 to 50,000 majorily for Grant." " And this, after a careful survey oftha field is my own opinion. The truth is, tb.3 presence of the National Government ia fe't in its unrivaled cur rency, in its post-office facilities in it. management of commerce, navigation and manufactures, and in the protection . of travel, and these, supplemented by the recent enforcement act, operate upon every class upon the laborer and the freedman, and upon tho capitalist even upon those who would like to vote for Greeley if they did not dread a change No-where are thess things so frequently seen ana so constantly experienced as in the Gulf States, i Corn Crop. L Tn sitirrts of tha cases of consumption originate in dyspepsia and a func tionally disordered liver, with this condition the bronchial tubes "sympathise" with the stomach. The Mnndrnke Pills are composed of one of Na ture's noblest Kift the Podophillum Peltatum. To despair of cure after such evidence of Us Bossibilitv in the worst cases, and moral cer tainty in all others, is sinful. Dr. Schenck's per sonal statement to the Faculty of his own cure was in tlieso modest words: Many years ago 1 was in tbo last stages of consumption; confined to my bed, and at one time my pliysichms thought that I could not live a week: then, like a drowning man catchini at straws, I heard of and obtained the preparations which 1 now offer to the public, and they made a iHTtwt. euro ot me. it scemca to me mat could fuel tlicm Denetntte niv whole svstem, Thev anon rinened the matter in mv lungs, and 1 would spit up more than n pint of offensive yellow matter every morning ror a long time.
