" . . " From the New York World, BEECIIER ON TEMPERANCE. He U ikhr tbe Wna(M8pNl Ui llsrlrCrnaiMlc. ... i. :, A largo number of new members were received in Plymouth Church, both by letter from other churches and by a profession of faith. Pre vious to the" sermon, in giving notice f the great temperance gathering- Jo take place in MrCuy ler s church to-morrow , evening, Mr. Beecher alluded to the temper church ance crusade in the following termn f 'I need nosay how truly I synv pathize wither the . movements that are being made throughout our land just now for the reformation of our morals in one respeot, for the sup pression of intemperance; for al though I do not suppose that this battle is to be fought by any one generation, or that will not have to be fought over again Jin, the next, and wlnle 1 regard it as only one part of that great battle of the spir itual man with the animal man, yet in each generation every effort should be made to limit and sop press so great an evil as intemer p ance, and so great a crime as the making of intemperance, for1 there is no crime like that which makes criminals ; and all other causes put together are not so fruitful as the salo of intoxicating drink. There fore whatever may be , lawfully em ployed to restrict it, whatever in strumen tali ties' may be employed, have my profoundest sympathy, and should hv our active co-ops 1 ration. We have seen a great many extraordinary things within the last twenty years, and another one is just dawning on us in this revival of religion in tho direction of tem perance under the auspices of wo men by the instrumentality of per sonal supplication with men and prayer unto God. It is indeed a phenamenon werthy both of study and Of admiration; worthy of study J uy ui wuu iuv e iu uiki uiu opera tion of the human mind, and espe cially of communities. I look upon it not to criticise it, but : to bid . it God speed, and it may be that by this instrumentality Qpd, will ork out a reformation, a regeneration that shall pat all our past attain ments into the background and fill the hearts of multitudes of men and women with joy and thanksgiving. Whatever way may be appropriate in our Eastern communities difirent from those isr -the West will be found out,' ind 'if mistake Are made, men should criticise them with great leniency and rejoice over every success, because every true man ought to rejoice in pluck ing his fellow-men as brands from the burning. toe snow jGm, BY T.
