The figures seem vast when the small amount used in making a fill ing is considered, but they are un doubtedly correct. The man in charge of the gold department of the largest dental supply house in the country arrived at these figures aft er extensive researches and calcula tions, and his estimate is verified by other men in a position to know. Two million dollars taken out of its stock of gold is the price that the country pays annually for having its teeth cared for in an up-to-date man ner. With the increase of fillings per capita throughout the country, which modem dental methods have brought about, this loss to the gold wealth of the country is apt to as sume proportions of importance with in the next few years. Ten years ago it is estimated that only 25 per cent of the people of this country ever went to a dentist except to have a tooth pulled. Five years ago the percentage was Ii3 1-3 per cent. Now it is declared, 50 per cent, of th-9 population pay visits to the dentist's chair for some other reason than that of having an ach- inig tooth extracted. This increase .in the number of dental patients in the country has resulted in a con sequent increase in the amount of gold used for this purpose. Practic- dollars' worth of gold, it is estimat ed, has been buried in the graveyards of this country in the period covered by these years. If a total could be arrived at, reckoning from the time when gold was first used in fillings, it is certain that the amount of gold lying unused and dead in graves would be near to $25,000,000. Subtracting the $5,000,000 taken off the earth from the total of $15, 000,000 used in the last decade, it will be seen that there must be at least $10,000,000 worth of gold per ambulating about the country in the mouths of Ur citizens. Ten mil lion dollars in the most convenient form in the world in the possession of the people; $10,000,000 walking, sleeping, and eating with them and yet not a cent of it that can be spent; not a cent of it that may be reckoned in the wealth of the indi vidual or the country at large. The use of gold in fillings is the only way in which the precious metal is used by which its value is lost or depreciated. In the manufacturing or repairing of jewelry, plate, or rfny article where gold is used as a solder its value is not lost nor is the supply of gold in reality diminished, for the article into which theold is put in creases proportionately in value, so the wealth of the country in gold re mains the same. But when a parti cle of it is used to fill a hole in a tooth, make a crown or bridge, and is soldered solidly into the mouth it is lost irrevocably. Chicago Tribune. A graduate 'of Vassar eollt.e, who preferred to hire out as a family servant rather than marry a rich old man she did not love, Katherine Gray, daughter of the late Senator Gray, of Virginia, was nprised this week that her fath er's fortune, lost or stolen when he died twenty-seven years ago, "had been recovered and that it was all hers. Miss Gray is at present employed as a house servant by E. W. Bails man, secretary of the Vesta. Coal company, Homewood. She will go , to Washington on Monday and make what arrangements are necessary to place herself in possession of an es tate worth $300,000. Miss Gray came to Pittsburg four mouths ago practically penniless. She said she was fleeing from an un ci t who insisted that she marrv an po-ed Virginian, and that rather than do this she would "work her fingers off." Senator Gray died in 'Southern ! California twenty-seven years ago. He lived at Norfolk, Va.. and was considered a man of wealth. When be died Katherine was 7 years old. When it came time to arrange the af fairs of the dead senator it was dis-cove-d that a fortune, estimated at between 300,000 and $400,000 on sish'ng of United Statc bonds, had disappeared.
