All the troops of the cxpidition have eoms"ntratel near Fort liridger, and are in a comparatively eomfortahle condition. The reported ad verses of the Pith Infantry, from the Mormons, is untrue. All the vaeant lands heretofore with drawn from sale or entry, lying outside of six miles on each side of the lands granted to Iowa in 1S.50, for railroad purposes, having lecn released, they will he restored to private entry at the several land ofliccs in the State on the lfith of lVhruary. The Secretary of War this evening received a telegraphic, dispatch from Lieutenant (cneral Scott; dated Xew York, in which the Ceneral says he has received good news from the Utah cxdition. Colonels Johnson and Smith's commands and the trains were up with Colonel Alexander, and the winde hody was marching upon port Eridger, which was only sixteen miles oft", on th 7th of Xovemler. The troops were in high spirits, and there was juM snow enough to protect the grass from lire. question of davery. Much Icsf, that portion would ho invalid without such opinion. lliu Would have leen in opposition to the nnmeron precedents which have occurred fcinco tho adoption of the Fed eral Constitution hy the different State. The question of slavery was the all ah-orLing question, and you were fent to Kansas with the full confidence of the President, to carry out the princi ples of the Kansas-Xcbraska Act. With the question, whether Kansas was to he a free or a slave State, you were not to interfere. You were to secure to the people of Kansas a free and fair election to de cide the question for themselves. The President was therefore happy to learn from your i",i patches to this Department, under date the 15th of July last, that in all your sj-eches you had refrained from expressing any opinion as to whether it should be a slave or a free State. I am instructed to inform you that your resignation of the oftice of Gov ernor of Kansas has loon accepted. I am, sir, vour obedient servant, LEWIS CASS. To IIn. Roci RT J. Walkf.r, Wa.-hington. Secretary Cnss on fJovernor WnN kcrs Itcsipnntion. Wasuixc.ton, Dee. Among the documents submitted to day, was Secretary Cass's reply to (iov. Walker, which is dated State Department, Dee. IS, 1S57. "On Wednesday last I recived your communication of tho 15th inst., ten dering your resignation as (iovernor of Kansas. This resignation is accom panied by a long argument on the af fairs of the Territory generally, to which you are well aware it would be impiojMT for this Dqwirtiuent to reply. if every oflicer of the (.iovernment who feels himself constrained to refuse obedience to the instructions of the President, hall pursue this unusual course and lits place on the files of the approp i ." Vpartinent, criticisms on the poK the Administration, no person knows better than yourself to what conscquceecs this might lead. The Department must cither cause the charges and arguments against tho President to be tiled among the public archives of the country without contra diction or reply, or it must spend the time which ought to Ik devoted to the public service, in controversies with subordinate ollicers who may disap prove of the President polity. WhiNt duty therciforc forbids us to enter into a controversial discussion with you, upon the various topics em braced by your argument, it is projcr that I should make a remaik upon a single point. Vim state that the President hr.s changed his policy in repaid to Kan sas, and why this allegation ? Simply Uvauso the Convention of Kansas have, in excrtiso ot the right Islong ing to them, decided that they would not submit th- whole Constitution to the jcople. Although they had sub mitted the all important and danger gerous question of slavery, which threatened to convulse tho Union and was alone prominent in the mind. of the jMvqde throughout eery State, he had not treated the submission of the tnomentoiH question as a men uullity. Under thoM circumstances it was his imparative duty (and this was in strict conformity with those instructions) to take care that fair elections Is held on this vitsl question, and thus give jeaee to the I nioii. Had he acted in any other manner, merely lcauso he preferred the sub mission of the Constitution originally to tho copL his responsibility would have leen of the gravest character. He never intimated or cxpressod tho opinion that tho Convention were bound to submit any poitioii of the Cou:ditutiwi to the vojdct c.ucpt the roLYCAMY a xn .si,avi:kv. The ultra- Pro-Slavery people of the South begin to express their opposi tion to the views of the President, in reference to the people of Utah. They fear that, if the precedent is established hv armed Government interference with the people of a Territory, that ultimately Slavery may sufier there from. The Utah people are polyga mies, and, if the President is going to make war upon them because they will not put up with the United States of ficials, who are opposed to polygamy, why may he or his successor not do the same, in case a slave-holding peo ple in a Southern Territory should see tit to drive from their midst Anti-Slavery olTicials ? A correspondent of the Ilichmond South has a long letter to its editor uj n this subject. He says : "The Mormons quit the State and settled in the wilderness, where it was thought no one would settle They called their country Deseret, and in coitfcwj't of their wishes the Govern ment called it Utah, l'righam Young was appointed (iovernor, and ruled his K'oplo in peace. The Government sent strangerb to judge them, and the people run them olf. For what ? For interfering with the Mormon insti tutions ; for trying to persuade the wo men that they were degraded, suffering victims of Mormon tvrannv; for wri- V f ' ting ;V letters and slanderous liboU on the Mormons and their institutions. For these thev drove them olf, and they did right. Let the Mormons be crushed for their religion for this is the real difheidty and it may not Ikj long before our nryro mas ters, our traders in human chattels, our dealers in the flesh and blood of our brother man, may be crushed out to vindicate the gloy of God and exalt the morality and religion of our mas tors. "My sympathies as a State llights man are with tho Mormons. I do not approve of their domestic institution. Xo matter it is their business, not mine; nor am 1 or any other person answerable for their sins, or liable to suffer for their mistakes. Asa South ern man, my sympathies are with the Mormons. The same measure that is lealt out to them for their polygamy, would be dealt out to us for our slave holding, by the same people, if they had the power; and God only knows ( if things go on as they are tending ) how long that power will be want ing." 'I... Delegat' from Utah will very likely not stand alone in Congress up on the Utah difficulty. 'Hie Fire-oat-ers may stand shoulder to shoulder, like Dr. llossand UMiop Coleuso, and support Polygamy and Slavery at the same time. Xutiomil Era. A (folden Wedding.
