necessary to keep up the health
of the cow to the highest stand
ard. At this reason of the year
change ol food is necessary.
Lon before the pastures are en
tirely despoiled of verdure, the
grasses nipped by repeated fronts
lo.-e mucn ot their nutriment. i
Though cows may gather their
fill, it if of poorer quality, and
thc'yicltl of milk speedily stiller.
A daily allowance of bran, shorts
or ground feed of rye and oat,
or two-thirds oat.i with one-third
corn, will supply the lack of
nourishment, and show itself'
with good interest added, in the
milk-pail. This feed .-houhi be
wet before using. We prefer it
to feeding with hay, for the rea
son that nourishment, more than
bulk, is needed ; they can pick
up enough partly withered gran
to fill their utomachs. This ex
tra allowance should not be de
layed until the animal is suffer
ing from insufficient food. It i
far eisici to keep a cow in good
condition, than to bring her up
after falling olf.
Pumpkins are usually fed out
littt, upo;i failure of pastures.
If it be practicable to keep them
uninjured until later in the sea
son, it would be better. They
come in et when dry hay and
stalks are the staple diet, and
.something more succulent is
craved and needed. Iti best to
remove seed from pumpkins:
they are an active diuretic, and
many believe that they divert to
urine fluids which would form
milk.
Any person who has been long
confined to a single article or two
of food, say to salt beef and po
tatoes, knows how the appetite
craves a change. The greediness
witn which cows lay hold of tur
nips, mangel wurzels, or other
roots in winter, proves that they,
too, relish variety, and in the
case of healthy animals, appe
tite is a safe guide in the selec
tion of food. Even if root? were
lacking in nutriment, an occa
sional allowance of them to cat
tle would be beneficial.
Observe strict regularity in the
time of feeding. If meals are
regularly served, animals will pa

othprwie. thev Will be restless i
and uneasy wliilc looking for

milch cows is yet preatly under

Thus, good .-heiter is equivalent
to x lare percentage of food.
Besides the actual loss of food
from the increased amount re

there is further Ios in milk from
the feeling of discomfort. The
