H'rin fur the Journal- BoWMNO (rREfcTN, Ky., ) Nov. 21, 1S02. ) Editor Journal: I am spending a few days hi this place, and, under the im pression that a lew line may be welcome to the readers of your paper, I write tbm. On the way from Louisville here, one tees the fearlul destruction of war every lew mile; fences and buildings destroyed, railroad iron torn up, and bent, and railroad bridge? that cor-t their thousand?, and were once the pride ol the country round, reduced to a scat tered heap of charred timber ! These bridgeware all replaced by a structure either temporary or permanent in its character, but still trie work of ruin stares you in the face, and the presence ol a detachment of troops, reminds you that the work of repair can have no permanence, without the wearing out of valuable lives in the camp, and the crushing ol tond hearts at home. Arrived hpre, one sees yet more vividly the desolation. Imagine one fourth of Winchester, comprising nearly all its bet buildings, giv en to the liames, hep of brick and mortar, ashes and blackened timber, and ynu will-have some conception of the appe.i ranee of this town. Imagine the ties ol friendship, brotherhood, parent age, that have grown with your growth, and twined themselves round your heart, contitutin all your enjoyments and softening all your sorrow; imagine all these consumed by the lurid Harnes ot the rebellion, and in their stead bitter hate ; neighbor warring against neighbor, friend against friend, brother against brother, and yon will have some idea ot the ruin of social relations. Convert your churches, school houses, and other largest build ing to the number of sixteen intomilltajy hospitals, crowd into them three thousand sick soldiers, dirty, without a change of clothes, three-fo irths of them with no bed but a blanket, and no pillow but a knapsack; cut oil all pos sibility of immediate relief; see from five to fifteen of these poor sutlerers dying diily hundreds of miles away from home and friends, and you will have a counterpart of the euffering and loss of life that wo are compiled to see here. Such is Bowling Green to-diy. Before the re bellion it wa a beautiful a:;H prosperous vilUe. It may ap pear to you who are at hon.e, that this miserable state of the sick mast be owin to culpibl neglect on the part of thost having them in charge; but one who is here, and knows the va?t amount of work done by the Post-Surgeon, Dr. Pearson, ar,d his subordinates, and appre ciates at their true value the line sensibility that prompts, and the fine executive ability that directs this work, will come to a very difterent conclusion. Every thing is bein; done that can be done; and in a very few days there will be a great ciangc. Bur.ks i lit r a It . i n rm r.inifn tirf liAfff iimaii . eed a;? List possible. A few days ago a soldier in jail for some offense was attack ed with measles. Dr. Pearson ordered him out and in doing so visited the institution. Happen ing to be hauging round at the time, I got an invitation to go j along and of course accepted it. The jailor unlocks the door and in we go. A villainous smell salutes our nostrils, and looking round wc see about lilty persons, men. women, and children, con tined in a damp room about lif- leen feet square, nearly all of them looking as hopelersly mis erable as a human being could well look. About threelourths of these poor creatures arc ne groes, or iimlattoes of S3me on of the many shades. I inquired why they were here, and learned 'hey were guilty of one of the worst of all crimes, man-steal, ing. They were the properly ot their masters and without the if ar of (iod belorc their eyes had attempted to steal themselves away. Dr. Clason, of Hospital No. 13, told me of a circumstance yesterday evening that may bear repeating. A bright mulatto woman belonijin to a friend who lives jut across the street from the Hospital, and whose name i Everett, was in the habit of com ing into the hospital twice a day to Kweep it up, and do what she could to promote the comfort of the sick I ler master threatened that if she did not quit if, he would give her a hundred lashes, but still she came, contrary to thrt advice of th? Doctor, who did not wish her kindness ol heart to bring upon her such a terrible punishment. Two or three days ago she ceased her visits, and her husband reports that the brutal threat has been executed. Now 1 have a great horror of being called a "damn ed abolitionist " and I am trying to learn to look upon incident like these as only some of the divine features of the peculiar institution. Of course I admire them, and if you fail to realize my admiration, it is only because I hive been unfortunate in tiie choice of words. There aro but few troops en camped near the town; but, from the lare number of teams I sec - and the quantity of commissary stores that are being consumed, there must be several regiments not very far oiT. Daily, troops are pouring Southward by hun dreds, and now and then we sec some moving Northward. Yes terday a battalion of the 60th Indiana rnarcned through th street with steady tnmp, on their way to Indiana, to join their cumrades who were captured and paroled at Mumtordsville. Where the regiment, re-united, is destined to go, I know not. Trains still run no further than Mitchellville, and unlucky trav elers Southward are hiving their pockets nicelv picked by 'bus drivers and othr birds of prey. This great thoroughfare, so im portant to our military opera tions, will be open again in a few days, and then the pent up current of goodi nd mm eai tlow on. This point, Bowlin-! I do not advise that in thi? you should act denominationally, but ilnfyou should co-operate in carrying out the spirit of the pro clamation both with the civil au thorities and with all those, by whatsoever name they may b called, who love Him who says that all kindness to the poor and the suflering is kindness to Him- ! elf. To this end I YOtlld flu ! get that the minister of the M. , . In the name of Him who es chews all promises unattended by attion who will judge men, not by what they say. but bv wht they do. I call your attention to tbe things. Yours, fraternally, ' E R. Amt
