Government debt and the liquidation of the rebel debt; besides, it would place all the resources of the Government in the hands of the Ittc rebel; the array, the navy, fort, nrcn;!.s ant ordnance stores, rould all be suljort to their com mands. Wc thinlc, in looking at this matter as it would be in case of a division of the Union party, it is the duty of Union men to not press questions that are repugnant to any class of loyal men, if it would bring nbout a separation of the various ilcments which went to make up the Union party. AYe can not expect to accomplish all the great reforms in a day. If President Lincoln had is Ftictl and given to the country Iiis emancipation proclamation at his first annual message to Congress, fdavery would have had a firmer hold cn American soil to day, than before the war. It was given just when the people were willing to submit, or when they called forit. So wc fdiould move in other great reforms. Intelligent men, and all others, must lie first convinced that there is a ne cessity for a reform, and if there is a prejudice, it must first be broken ttowa. Politicians can not accom plish these great reforms, tadess the people will go with them, any more than can Generals put down a rebellion without men to assist them. COLO.MZATIO.V. The Tiielimond Palladium asks us if we are not afraid, in expressing ourselves in favor of colonization, that we will incur the displeasure of Geo. W. Julian, and of favoring the Pred Scott decision, and how we daro express opinions of our own on this vexed question. Wc answer the Palladium that we belong to no man, neither is the Journal the organ of any man. We profess to advocate the great principles of the Union party, as we belong to that organiza tion, and as such we discuss these principles a3 best we can with tho light that is before us, "having no friends to reward, and no enemies to punish.' It is not with men, but principles, that wc deal, cs w desire to build up and sustain a great party, fouuued upon the principles of jus tice. Therefore we advocated colo ratation. The Union party is a new organization, formed out of the ele ments of three pirty organizations, for the purpose of crushing the slave holders rebellion, since the crushing of which, fiew questions have arisen. which must be met. Wc can not close our eyes to the fact that the result of the war has been the free ing of four millions of slaves, and that these people must occupy some position in tins Government. The qstion then is, what fchall that po itioLbe. Three condition? are be- usscl.
