We trust this maybe so, and in such event, welespeak for them that success which their past efforts so justly merited, and which they so gen-f-rou-lv received. m The I'nlr. The fair last wwk wai well attend ed, considering the Inclemency of the weather. During the first three days of the exhibition it rained almost in cessantly, making it, of course, very di-agrccahle, and preventing many from bringing their products for exhi bition who otherwise would doubtless have done o. Yet, notwithstanding tlue discouraging circumstance, the different departments were well rep resented. The w eather on Friday evening clear ed away, and the following morning dawned ujon us bright and pleasant, continuing m throughout the day, in eonsequen e of which a crowd throng ed the fair grounds, giving thereto an appea rane of life and activity, and imparting a spirit of cheerfulness to each and all. In stock, there was an unusual num ber of fine bred horses, cattle, sheep, Ac. In machinery, inventions and farming implements, the stock was light, as was also the specimens of workmanship in the mechanical art. Of vegetables, there wasa fine display, equal in quantity, quality and variety to any previous exhibition. In the de partment of fine arts there was also a very fair display, among which were several very fine, npecimens of grain ing and imitations of marbel, on wood, by Mr. C. C. Johnson, of this place, w hich were the admired of all admir ers. The ginger-bread stands were huge ly represented, and did a thriving bus iness in their line. Peter Funk auc tions w ere numerous and had a "gay old time" in swindling green m. We noticed one over-grown, gauky look ing specimen from the rural districts, w ho had just spent his labt shilling with "Peter," and comoout with brass enough on his huge wrists and fingers to furnish material for the manufacture of half a dozen young lawyers. The "dancing hall" was an object of attrac tion to many, espcially those from the more remote districts iii the country. Thee would crowd up to the door, pur chase tickets, pass in, heel and toe it to their hearts' content, then pass out, to make room for others equally as anxious to pay a fee for the exquisit privilege of churning the breath out of their lodies. Preum-ms. Miss Mary ItHill and .Miss .Marv n. lrvm, rtu or tins vi- cinity, received the premiums at the fair on Saturday last, for being the most skillful and graceful lady eques trians among the competitors. a - Pia nous. It is said that "Jordan Is a hard road to travel," and perhaps it is; but hav ing as yet never traveled that route, we can't express any opinion on tht subject. Rut we happen to know that the road leading to the grocery store of Way A Stakebake is a plain, smooth and well-beaten track, and Is traveled daily by K'ore-j of customers. Take a trip that way. Tue beat Sewing Machine la Finkle A Lyon'. Irish Row. A bloody and brutal fight took place on Saturday evening last to the north part of town, between a party of drunk en Irish, in which, as is usual on such occasions, men, women and children were indiscriminately mixed up, and during which t-evero 1 of the party were badly hurt. We were unable to learn from what cnuse the fight had iU ori gin, but presume the prime mover in the difficulty was bad whisky. Club, fctones, bricks and other dangerous missels were freely ued, and many a of Erin received his quietus in the shape of a broken head or brubed countenance, or both. One fellow, who claims to have taken no part in the muss, further than in using his eflbrti to quell the row, was set upon hy .some half dozen of the frantic brutes, knock ed down, beaten and stamped in a horrible manner, and, it is thought, would have been killed outright had it not been for the timely inteference of some of our citizens. His face and head were horribly bruLsed and man gled, and presented more the appear ance of a mas of blood v liver than any tiling humau. Another Irishman, who says he was on his way to the de It for the purpose of taking the train to Union City, to attend the marriage of a sister, was also attacked hy the drunken mob and received alike treat ment with the other, being inhuman ly beaten and otherwise maltreated. The women, it is paid, took an act ive part in the "shindy," throwing stones, bricks, Ac., at whoever or what ever came handiest; and one of the women is said to have leen "slightly wounded in the fraeus." Altogether, it was the most disgraceful afliiir that lias occurred iu our town for many a day. Glassware. A new and splendid stock all kinds and varieties, just re ceived by Thomas A Son. A fkesii supply of excellent family groceries, a large and well selected stock, has just arrived at the store of W. It. Way fc Co.
