LATE FROM VERA CRUZ. We copy the following from the New York Express of Saturday evening: The U. S. transport ship Massachusetts, Captain Wood, arrived from Vera Cruz this morning, which place she left on the 5th. The M. has come here for repairs to boilers and engine; she has been able to use her steam power but little during the pas sage. We are indebted to Lt. McCorkle, U. S. N., for some verbal information of interest to New York. The gallant Col. Burnett is dead, and was killed outright at the last day's battle of Churubusco, as is stated by the Sun of An ahuac. The steamer Ann McKim, fo. New (Means, was waiting at Vera Crux on the 5th, with steam up wailing for the despatches of Gen. Scott; but the time of their arrival was uncertain, as all communication with the interior was inter rupted by the guerrillas. There was no news at Vera Cruz from the army except that already given by the corres pondents of the New Orleans press. Virt Lati from the River Plate. By the ship Star Republic, Capt. Ell well, 41 days from Moute video.the New York papers Buenos Ay res papers to August 7th, four weeks later than previous advices. England has withdrawn from her partner ship with France in the blockade of Buenos Ay res, and of that portion of the Oriental coast in possession of Oribe and his adherents; and the blockade was to be continued by the French squadron alone. The English and French ministers had retired from the river Flate. The siege of Montevideo continued, but a flairs seemed drawing to a close. The growth of Ohio is a modern wonder. M. Cist, the intelligent ststistician, has just ublihcd some tables, which hhow the popu ation thus: 1800. 4,r65 1810, 230,760 1820, 581,4.34 1830, 937,637 1S40, 1,516,467 He estimates that, at the same rate, Ohio will, in 18'30, contain a population of 3,190, 331. And this is but one of the many States of the West. Charles Jared Ingersoll. We learn from undoubted authority that this gentleman will take grounds against the Admiuistration in the next Congress, and the authority is his own de claration made without reserve to individuals of his acquaintance. But we repose not the least fui tli in Mr. I.'s declarations. He has been too long in the democratic tracts to be comfort able uutoi ttiem, George J. J. Barber, Esq is the whole-hearted and liberal-minded Whig who some time since presented the editor of the Cortland Whig with a new set of types for his paper. After repeated solicitations from the Whigs of Cortland, the editor has, without Mr. B.'s consent, given his name to tit's publi-. Now that it is known, we hope the Whig press will pass it round as worthy of "everlasting retnem bcrance." Syracuse Journal. Ludicrous Predicament. In this town a few years since, a poor devotee to the madden ing cup, who had drank to excess, become lim ber in the knee joints, and exceeding crooked in his wars, was wendinghis way expeditiously as possible under the existing circumstances. Upon his shoulders was a bag of Indian meal, and directiy before him a puddle af muddy wa ter. As he stepped into the miry pool he stumbled, fell face downwards, and the bag of meal, falling upon the back of his head, most effectually fastened his phiz in the dirty ele ment. Such a blowing and spouting, kicking and squirming, we never witnessed before nor i'nce. Extricate himsslf he could not. The I sal held him fust; and the poor unfortunate wuld have soon breathed his last, had no one be n near to led a helping hand. Maine Far mer. Married. In this City, on Thursday even ing, by the Rev.
