Now that the smoko of tho fight has blown away it is easy enough to see that the Browu He publicans fcave placed the State of Missouri in the hands cf the Democracy, where,' in our humble opinion, it will stay for two or three elections at least. Tho enfranchise ment of sixty or seventy thousand voters who had been deprived of the ballot became cf their treason to tho Government, will strengthen the Demoeratio party to that extent, and place it largely in the majority in the State. The following is now the Indiinap olis Journil's comprehension of the situation : When Urowa was nominated for Governor by a portion of the Mis souri Hcpubiieans, the Democrats of the State patted tho Crown men on the back, and said they would help elect Crowa. And they did. Chief among the supporters of Brown was that staunch old Demccratie paper, the Missouri Republican. Meanwhile the Democracy took care to put Dem ocratio loeal tiekets in the field where ever the feud between the supporters of Browa and : MeCiurg- woald give them, an opportunity, Browa was triumphantly elected, but he is a mere figure head after all, "as the wily - Democracy se cured 2." decided preponderanca ia the Legislature, and elected Demu . crats to nearly all tho fat county offi ces in the tiuts, including St. Louis. The Democratic menkics having used they Browa Cit3 to rake the chest nut out of tho ashes, .have informed them that they have no ' further use icr them. Tho work is an exhaustive treatise on the all important theme indicated by its title; and, nothwitstanding many of the positions taken by the author are directly opposed to the views commotily received in oit'.odox circles, stiil the greatness of its theme, the classical beauty of its styL, the ingenuity of its arguments, the candor with which, it assails tho general opin ion, and the touching pathos -shioh ever and anoa dims tho reader's eyes with ters, will secure for the work a wi.de spread reputation. In the introductory chapters the au thor discusses tho varied theories of the soul's origin; elaborates the idea that death was an original and benevo lent arrangement of the Divine gov ernment; presents the grounds of a belief ia a future lifo, and, uader the head of " Theories of tho Soul's Destination," discusses in a masterly manner, the theories of annihilation, re-alsorpiioii, resurrection, conveyance. recurrence, and transition. In the second part of tho work, em bracing one hundred and thirty-seven pages, we have a detailed statement and critical survey of the varied opin ions ea tho subject cf a future life, which Lave been entertained among the Pagan nations. Aa incalculable amount of interesting and useful in formation, which it would be difficult to find ia any other single volume. has been condensed into thici part of Mr. Alger's great work., Ja parts third and fourth, the author enters ia to a critical examination of the teach ings of the Christian revelation and of the Christian Church upon iiho great theme before him, ingeniously setting aside the received iaterpretations in many instances, and arriving at con clusions wholly adverse to the con viotions of tho Btaid champions of orthodoxy. Ia part fifth, ths author treats at length on the more import ant theme associated with tho notion P . f..'. i:r. , ' . , . . ' . . i - Utrectioarfdture puuishaient, tho na ture aad method cf salvation, the recognition of lnonds in a luture state, and "the local fate of man ia the astronomio universe." The author contends that the whole account of the garden cf Ed:a was a fanciful creation of "the miad; that Adam was but the representative cf a single race of the great humaa family, whose origin must be referred to the dateless "calendars of a pre historic antiquity. He discards the notion that death is a consequeace of human sin, but regards it as aa original, benevo lent necessity. lie presents a variety of objections to the theory of a literal bodily resurrection, and concludes that there is an " etherial structure " which, ia death, "is disengaged at last from its gross envelope, and.'unfef- tered, soars to the divine realms of ether and iight." lie evidently be lieves ia future punishment, but re jects the orthodox idea of the eterni ty of its duration. His theory of sal vation is, that it is " harmony of all the forces of the soul wich themselves and with all related forces beyond. harmony of the inlividual will with the divine will, harmony of personal action with universal activity." These are the principal poi its of the work which come ia coaUct with the teaching called evangelical While dissenting from ma ny of the views presented, we think the work of Mr. Alger aa admirable and well- timed addition to this department of our literature. Truth will suffer no thing by investigation ; and, a.side from a few grave errors in doctrine, there is a comncoa sense, a philcsopby. in the researches and conclusions of this volume, which accords with thn in tuitions of the eouI, and to which all cultivated thought seem3 to bo rapidly tending.
